I really hope last.fm's denials are sincere.

Whether that data sharing thing is true or not, I think it illustrates what last.fm's business model might be, i.e. datamining.

hmmm. dodgy

If they did act over it I hope U2 sales go to shit and noone buys their stuff anymore

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 22 February 2009 23:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Which shouldnt be hard since their recent albums have been utter utter shit. And thats coming from someone who U2 was their fave band at school.

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 22 February 2009 23:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think the story can be true. To begin with, Techcrunch doesn't provide a solid source for it.

I also don't think last.fm is 'datamining', like Neil S. said. They're 'mining' data alright, but only to the degree a member/subscriber agrees to. Now, I don't like it one bit last.fm was bought by CBS, don't trust them at all, but I can't really see why it's beneficial for CBS to turn over all this information. It's suicide.
I don'trust CBS, and I'm on the look-out regarding privacy matters, but I just don't really see the logic behind a step like this. Unless the U2-case creates a precedent where people who are scrobbling albums not released yet become the target. In which case it's RIP last.fm.

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 February 2009 00:19 (fifteen years ago) link

CBS could easily handover data without last fm knowing. I think whether it's true or not last fm will lose a lot of users/subscribers now as people will not trust CBS.

dude that u2 album. i tried to listen to the first song, twice, but it made me feel so bad and weird inside i had to stop. when did u2 turn into creed?

k3vin k., Monday, 23 February 2009 01:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean this is from someone who has nothing invested in them at all but still

Got sick of 239879237429 erroneous Daft Punk scrobbles clogging up my ladder and deleted 90 % of them, much more representative now.

punk is deady brewster (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 28 February 2009 01:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Frank was a British girl group, their criminally underrated album was produced by Xenomania. They were dropped after single #1 and I imagine they have gone their separate ways by now.

Totally Frank = great hangover T4 kinda rubbish but still addictive Sunday morning tele.

Removing all that Daft Punk put a RADIOHEAD song as my most listened so that's gone too. Fucking scrobble bugs.

punk is deady brewster (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 28 February 2009 22:27 (fifteen years ago) link

listening to crap music isn't a 'scrobble bug'

w/ sax (electricsound), Saturday, 28 February 2009 23:54 (fifteen years ago) link

It is when it plays on random three times and scrobbles 96 plays.

he just wont admit he loves radiohead and daft punk so he makes up a story about bugs in the scrobbler

ilxors seem to be most of alex moultons top listeners the past week
http://www.last.fm/music/Alex+Moulton/+listeners?page=1

I've noticed that now when you play leaked albums, the album covers still show, yet the albums obviously aren't on last fm nor is there any mention of the albums on the albums page. I thought this was great until all that cbs/riaa stuff came up.
It's not major label stuff either (prodigy and Mastodon did show up too though) Mono and the new Wolves In The Throne room pics show and they wont be out til next month!

i'm not a frank fan, why do you ask? you could have probably checked for their presence/absence in my library. i barely have time for girls aloud any more, and i find all these sub-GA acts whose entire careers are based on mopping up the rejected GA demos littering xenomania's studio extremely tiresome.

lex pretend, Sunday, 1 March 2009 20:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I just wondered who they were, and thought you would be the most likely to know.
