Confession: I've never liked "Stayin' Alive." I've kind of come to terms with it over the years, and I no longer hate it as I once did, but it still isn't a song that I would ever listen to voluntarily.

Yeah, I was weighing Bob Marley vs. the Sex Pistols there, but with Fleetwood Mac, it's not even a contest.

ha! we even had the same pre-Mac dilemma

It's ok, but I prefer You Should Be Dancing, Night Fever and More Than a Woman.

I never know which link to use. I hate clicking on a playlist link and having it come up in a web browser. Anyway --

AC/DC was the only one not available.

xxp sometimes I feel like the Tavares version of More than a Woman is one of my favorite songs ever. the Bee Gees original pales in comparison imo

g simmel, Thursday, 7 November 2013 17:13 (ten years ago) link

Totally; the Tavares one is transcendent. The Bee Gees is karaoke time.

haven't heard either of these songs, to my knowledge:

Althea and Donna - Uptown Top Ranking
Plastic Bertrand - Ca plane pour moi

you probably heard both

g simmel, Thursday, 7 November 2013 18:18 (ten years ago) link

what an impossible task.
many of my top faves of all time, are in this : bowie, elo, clash, television, talking heads, ramones, sex pistols, donna summer ..
genuinely have no idea which to pick.

^ I choose to believe you mean the Bee Gees

There's no point in asking, you'll get no reply

Perhaps if you hummed a few bars ...

Ditto on Tavares's "More Than a Woman." The Bee Gees' version is fine--it's them in the movie when the camera whirls in circles, right?--but Tavares make it even better.

'trans europe express'

CardiacsPrincesse69xxx (Matt P), Thursday, 7 November 2013 21:25 (ten years ago) link

really tempted by 'uptown top ranking' or 'blank generation.' i've never knowingly heard the clash.

Wait, what?

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 7 November 2013 21:33 (ten years ago) link

That is not OK. Also - I doubt that's true.

I love what Wayne Shorter did in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and in Miles' bands, but Weather Report can eat my poo.

Why are We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions listed as if they're one song? I hate that.

Voting Fela, that groove is so sick.

Why are We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions listed as if they're one song? I hate that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Will_Rock_You

. In 1977, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" were issued together as a worldwide top ten single.[7] Soon after the album was released, many radio stations began playing the songs back to back without interruption.[8]

When performed live, this version is usually followed by "We Are the Champions", another of the album's hits, as they were designed to run together.[7] The songs are often paired on the radio and at sporting events, where they are frequently played.[7] They were the last two songs Queen performed at Live Aid in 1985.[15] The songs are also paired back to back on the album, and they are still played together to this day on American classic rock radio stations.

shocking

mookieproof, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 00:02 (ten years ago) link

Yay, after a look at the list and a gut-check, I went with "Marquee Moon". But really comparing some of these is like the unstoppable force meets the immovable object.

i'm surprised that "I Feel Love" didn't steamroll this poll.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 02:15 (ten years ago) link

sure it came out on top but i expected to win by a wide margin let alone tie.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 02:16 (ten years ago) link

surprised that uptown top ranking got nil

mookieproof, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 02:20 (ten years ago) link

Didn't vote, but would've gone with Trans Europe Express, which I remember being totally startling and weird when it came on the radio back then

Josefa, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 05:41 (ten years ago) link

voted "flashlight", but half wish i'd thrown another point to "ca plane pour moi" (or "psycho killer" or "zombie" or "blank generation" or...)
