Gary Glitter's second album is a different beast from the retro-oriented Glitter: this time the material is predominately original and many of the tunes have a harder, funkier edge to them (example: "Come on, Come in, Get On" has enough distortion on it to qualify as heavy metal). The album's best songs are the ones that became big pop-chart hits in England: "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" is a surprisingly lusty mid-tempo slice of glam that was later successfully covered by Joan Jett and "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again" combines a double-time beat with call and response vocal performance to create a truly infectious single. The album also features one of Glitter's best non-single tracks in "Sidewalk Sinner," a cult favorite that speeds up Glitter's traditional glam beat and adds some surprisingly funky rhythms into the mix. The problem with Touch Me is that the remainder of the album tracks aren't quite as solid as these highlights.

In 2002 I started a thread called Gary Glitter on the Radio in which I wondered how badly Paul McCartney for example would have to behave before people stopped listening to The Beatles, but I don't think I put the question very well so it didn't go anywhere.

Anyway, I notice you revived it some time last year to say good things about that album!

I have oft mentioned that "Happy Birthday" song.

Basically, he's in bed with a 15 yr old girl, waiting for midnight to pass and she becomes 16

From NME.com

In February, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) launched an investigation into whether South Wales Police acted quickly enough after being tipped off about Watkins. In a new statement issued to NME today (November 27), the IPCC has given more details about the nature of the investigation, revealing that the case is centred around the actions of one officer, who is also being investigated in another case where it is alleged that he failed to act on an allegation that a 15-year-old girl had been raped.

The statement reads: "The IPCC investigation into whether or not South Wales Police failed to take appropriate and timely action in relation to information they were in receipt of in advance of Mr Watkins' subsequent arrest is ongoing. We are considering matters dating back to 2008.

"At this stage the investigation is focused on the actions of one officer, a detective sergeant who is also being investigated in another case where it is alleged he failed to act on an allegation that a 15-year-old girl had been raped. That remains ongoing.

"The detective sergeant has been served with gross misconduct notices advising him that his conduct is subject to investigation."

Peaches Geldof is in the shit for tweeting the names of his co-defendants so I'm glad that I redacted them on here after all. Not that DL on ILX is quite as significant as Geldof on Twitter but still.

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Thursday, 28 November 2013 21:11 (ten years ago) link

there's a chance that these children will be growing up from a very young age in foster care under new identities, so maybe this whole bit is theoretical? again i'm not saying that to excuse anyone's actions but maybe the consequences of the leaked names won't be as disastrous as they potentially could be. obviously entering the realm of deep hypothesis here

exciting vampire castle (NickB), Thursday, 28 November 2013 21:12 (ten years ago) link

yeah but fostered kids and adoptees often look up their birth parents

oh sure, but at least they might grow up in an environment where other people don't know who they are

there was a horrifying and highly-publicised rape and murder case here a couple of years ago and the other day, during a talk at a fundraiser, a senior cop showed the crowd a photo of the victim's semi-naked body just after it had been uncovered in a shallow grave.

I'm really surprised that nobody has made mention of the fact that one of the last bands to support Lostprophets before Watkins was arrested were the very young all-girl band Cherri Bomb, whose guitarist would have only been about 15 or something at the time. Christ, if only they'd known eh?

http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/nov/29/lostprophets-removed-hmv-ian-watkins

HMV's decision reflects the gravity of Watkins' crimes. It is unusual for a major retailer to entirely remove an artist's catalogue, even after a major conviction: HMV continue to sell records by Gary Glitter, Burzum and Charles Manson.

suspect "HMV's decision reflects their interest in sidestepping flaming-torch Twitter campaigns for the sake of a band who no-one is going to buy albums by anyway" might be more accurate
