Pitchfork.tv should remake "A Woman Under The Influence" recasting Ott as Mabel.

"the largest fashion corporation....in england"

call all destroyer, Monday, 2 December 2013 19:44 (ten years ago) link

Like, boomers have been telling millennials since before the crash of 2008 to "follow your bliss" and find a job that you love to do. Okay, that'd be good if you can get it. And some people do get it. Some people love to write about music and they found jobs that paid them money to write about music. But Gen X Chris Ott comes along and says no, that's selling out maaaaaan, you need to do it out of the pureness of your heart. Follow my lead and make 94k with bennies from unchecked corporate capitalism; in your spare time, vlog about music for free. I'm selling out during my day job to capitalism but at least my music writing is pure and untouched. That way you know my opinions about deep album cuts from Moose have not been influenced by InBev.

乒乓, Monday, 2 December 2013 19:47 (ten years ago) link

so i think his point is that it was ok for pitchfork to write about radiohead and leverage that into becoming the most influential music website (and make some money in the process) but it's not ok to write about speedy ortiz in nme because speedy ortiz is not a notable enough band to transcend predatory capitalism, and therefore you should be alone on friday night?

deX! (DJP), Monday, 2 December 2013 23:23 (ten years ago) link

People don't boast about benefits in the current climate over here, it has a different meaning.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 2 December 2013 23:31 (ten years ago) link

so it means being close to sea level? (current climate)

From the Album No Baby for You! (Matt P), Monday, 2 December 2013 23:33 (ten years ago) link

It means the atmospheric hatred that is allowed to exist and always has existed.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 2 December 2013 23:43 (ten years ago) link

yeah, we have no real government assistance so "benefits" means health insurance, dental if you're lucky, retirement plan, and your own vlog

Contemplating how many doughnuts follow him on twitter, how many fucking people on this thread are discussing him right now and he is a complete bell end with a stupid fucking punchable face, who talks lame student shite about an era of music that nobody gives a fuck about.

It's kind of sad to see Ott flailing around in the dark like this, just looking for a target to hit without enough thought going into what he's saying. Still, I miss the days when an Ott or a True or a Wells would be given room at a major pub.

Position Position, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 16:59 (ten years ago) link

did that actually happen? i don't really have a good handle of where he's written, all i know is he was at PF before it was really a major pub

deez the season (some dude), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 17:01 (ten years ago) link

I initially read "pub" as a literal pub and was imagining bars with "RESERVED FOR MUSIC CRITICS" signs set up on certain tables, which would be kind of awesome/hilarious

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 17:06 (ten years ago) link

Give it time.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 17:07 (ten years ago) link

critics shouting their opinions of new music releases, in a drunken stupor in a pub area "RESERVED FOR MUSIC CRITICS," is the only really true, pure music journalism. anyone who does it another way -- i hold you in contempt.

.@EthanM_Long modifier: feed people to corporations all you want, work for one, just keep music the fuck out of it.

I thought this was a cute save. "one should work to help others...oh wait, i mean KEEP MUSIC PURE"
