Emerson's Old Timey Custard Suckin' Band

Dreamies 'Programs Nine & Ten' (reish; totally bonkers audio collage/pop-psych. two 25 minute long pieces.)

sam & viv: the country gospel tones 'gospel songs country style' (i listened to this expecting it to be really boring jeebus country, but it's good. a husband/wife duo who both sing; he fiddles, she picks. they're competent for sure, and the interplay is nice if not exactly "hot". I don't know what year it's form, but it seems pretty dang early. The sleeve references a regional hit they had in '51, and also a tour in '54. and it's Canadian!)

Mike Gangloff brought a grip of vinyl with him to the T/F festival this weekend. I bought
Charalambides Rose/Thorn
Pelt A Stone for Angus Maclise
Spiral Joy Band Pleasure is the Headlight
Jack Rose Dr Ragtime and his Pals
He had a Jack Rose/Black Twig Pickers collab 7" that one of the dudes with him said was the best thing out of all the stuff that he brought but it was priced at Ten dollars so I didn't buy it. I tried to buy it the next day but Mike had already left town with all the vinyl. Patrick Best and Mikkael Dimmik were playing two more sets for the festival and Pat told me that a 12" with better recording quality was in the works, anyway. All the Pelt/Spiral Joy Band sets I saw this weekend were great.

A whole bunch of VU/Eno/Cale/Reed records. 4 hours to go! I'm tempted to go for it even though I know I shouldn't.

how is that fucked up year of the rat??

I dunno if I'm super impressed on first couple of listens... it sort of reminds me of the other 12" they did in this series on this label, Year Of The Dog, in that it's a notably 'unpunk' slowburner with ponderous squally guitars... all good except I just don't think FU do those that well. Having said that it has a pretty good chorus and there's plenty of time to get on board with it y'know

during my one day in Lima (Peru) I managed to find a whole mini-mall selling used vinyl. I have almost no space or weight left in our luggage, so I only bought two albums - one of quena (flute) songs that sounded pretty good, on Philips from the 60's or 70's. I checked out some of their rare Peruvian psych (under the counter of course) and talked records with the dudes, they were definitely aware of the collectors market. They had a Traffic Sound LP for $40 that was VG- at best, and also some Telegraph Ave LPs that I didn't price. For the other record I ended up going for a Chilean record by a band called Los Jaivas, called Alturas De Machu Picchu. I think some of the words are by Pablo Neruda, he is credited on the cover as well. Only heard a bit in the store but it was good-sounding piano-driven psych-prog stuff. And since the cover was trashed with stickers and ringwear, it was only 7 bucks. Then I went down the aisle a bit and got a bunch of CDR copies of rare stuff like El Polen.

sleeve, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 19:51 (fifteen years ago) link

man the internet really ruined finding great scores

straight up, you're payin' jacks just to hear me phase (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 19:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Not in every case.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 19:59 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah but it's definitely harder now. ebay pricing is in effect everywhere it seems like.

straight up, you're payin' jacks just to hear me phase (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 20:02 (fifteen years ago) link

You can still find crazy bargains if you look hard, true, but the awareness has definitely filtered down pretty far. In an early issue of Bixobal magazine (last year maybe?) one of the guys from Climax Golden Twins talks about going to India to look for 78s and all the store owner dudes were talking about how much the rare Indian-press 78s of Beatles tunes were worth on eBay.

semi-xpost

sleeve, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 20:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I've scored tons of great clean vinyl in library sales. Michael Hurley, Alice Coltrane, Daniel Johnston, Sun Ra, Revolutionary Ensemble, Art Ensemble of Chicago, and more, all for fifty cents a piece.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 20:14 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah garage sales can still be good.

either people think "oh god who the hell would want these old things?" or have seen some thing about the "vinyl" craze and think "Oh god dudes are going to pay top dollar for my beat up copy of Aja!"

straight up, you're payin' jacks just to hear me phase (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

hahaha so true

sleeve, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

fucking records man.
also, i like the los jaivas LPs i have--i don't have that one though. their earlier stuff was a bit folkier.

ian, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 21:06 (fifteen years ago) link

i still find cool records for cheap. but i smell them out like old crusty digger bloodhound. found this album by The Load in a record store a couple weeks back in the dollar bin. PRIVATE PROGPSYCH MONSTER:

http://www.popsike.com/pix/20050327/4714204549.jpg

(cool record when it isn't all brandenburg concerto william tell overture on yer ass and even those moments have their charms. goes for a hundred/hundred fifty)

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 22:03 (fifteen years ago) link

so, these people i know were kind enough to give me 400 or 500 records they wanted to get rid of in their basement and now i FINALLY own a copy of jorge ben's africa brasil! i'm so happy. i fell in love with "ponta de lanca africano (umbabarauma)", like, 20 years ago and i've NEVER seen a copy of the album. and it's a friggin' PRISTINE brasilian first pressing on Philips. the vinyl would make you weep it's so perfect. it sounds unbelievable too.

also got that cool Michigan Rocks comp from 1977 on seeds & stems records. mc5/stooges/bob seger/mitch ryder/frost/amboy dukes/third power/src/the rationals.

and a nice clean abc/impulse copy of jazz in silhouette by sun ra and a nice copy of revolution of the mind. um, but i'll probably sell those.

out of all the records i'll probably keep 10 or 12. the rest i'll sell.

got "Extrapolation" the first John McLaughlin solo album.

man so great, most "tradish" thing I've heard him on, but still very unique and creative, might like it better than Mahavishnu era

straight up, you're payin' jacks just to hear me phase (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 9 March 2009 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I got that bootish looking comp of early GG Allin stuff. Some really great tracks and surprisingly poppy and, uh, happy sounding. Especially on the track '1980's Rock and Roll'. He's like “Come on along it’s a rock and roll party / Bring all your friends and don’t be tardy!". He uses the word Tardy! No raping or butts or scum or anything. Well, not right off the bat. And Wayne Kramer and Dennis Thompson played with the band. I had no idea.

I also found a cheap but slightly popping Maui Album by Merrel Fankhauser and a stack of mystery Lebanese 7"s from the 1970s. Some cool bongo and strings instrumentals.

eddie & ernie - turn here 7"

i saw that the other day and kinda remembered who they are; is the seven inch good?

deveraux billings (schlump), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link

i've only listened to it through twice but i like it. kinda upbeat/melancholy r&b from 1965 or so. i'm really pining more for the track on one of those dave godin soul comps called "I Believe She Will" but that single seems harder (read: more $$) to come by. absolutely love that song though.
