Here's an updated version of Max's comp from above with the whole of the DJ History top 25 Balearic in it. Some of the versions of Max's stuff I've upgraded. E2-E4 is in there but as the 5 min edit version.
It all looks a bit of a mess in the folder coz I got bits from here and there but it should all be tagged nicely for itunes etc.
I have a lot to do today so I've done this as displacement activity.

does that include the extended versions of the songs i posted or no?
― deej, Friday, 21 March 2008 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link
I think so. Coz I would have added them to the folder at the time.
― Raw Patrick, Friday, 21 March 2008 20:31 (sixteen years ago) link
Fuck. The City Lights is still the short version.

No one seems to have mentioned Tears For Fears b-side/side-project "Johnny Panic and The Bible of Dreams". Balearic as fuck.

i picked up the Sueño Latino 1991 Remix 12" and was playing it at home and wifee asked i take it off because it was too "flutey and patooty".
― jaxon, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link
granted i was playing it at 33 instead of 45 and the flutes do start to sound pretty Enigma-y
embrace the enigma

there is definitely a line that i am willing to cross where it comes w/ this stuff that most of my friends arent
i bought the Donna Summers "State of Independence" 7" a long time ago and kinda threw it off to the side not really feeling it, but after hearing it in the context of the rest of these balearic tracks, i really really like it.

A couple of the tracks in that show up in the wrong order cuz you need to delete the "Album Artist" field in iTunes. And one of them has a (pretty obvious) wrong title. I should've spent a couple more minutes checking it but no biggie.
A couple of songs in the Top 25 are really fucking bad. Ecstacy for the 1st time is powerful stuff is the lesson.

lol "tunnel of love" is a pretty balearic album already
― max, Friday, 18 April 2008 14:37 (sixteen years ago) link
i like that bruce mix a lot, but the rest of that EP is pretty goofball. It also has "balearic" mixes of Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My" and Joanna Newsom "Book Of Right On", which mostly just throw some drum loops on top of the originals.

using 'i'm on fire' seemed kinda disappointingly obvious to me (which shows how big a deal context is to lots of this stuff).

The Ronny & Renzo mystery mix at DJ History is fabulous. Love their torpid-as-fuck vibe - really stands out I think, especially given how much balearic DJ aesthetics otherwise overlap. But I want to make them to make more of their own tracks. "Big Smack & Flies" and their remix of Mutron's "Alone" are so fantastic viscous and foreboding. They remind me of Depeche Mode's Ultra, in a really good way.
Weirdest, most wonderfully WTF moment of the mix: strangely brilliant bootleg of Kevin Lyttle's "Turn Me On" with Radiohead's "Everything In It's Right Place".
