Hahaha. @Evan, don't sweat it, man. It's no big deal. Plus, I might like them for other reasons (even though they sound nothing like Real Estate).
I have heard Field Mice, and I don't hear the similarities, to be honest.
Been looking for new stuff to listen to, anyway, though.
I'll start with Close Lobsters, then.

See with Field Mice it probably starts and ends with "Emma's House" which I posted above.
― Evan, Thursday, 27 February 2014 21:00 (ten years ago) link
The first few bars of that Close Lobsters song are exactly like "Its Real". Looking forward to the new Real Estate - lovely languid summer voibs all day please
― everyday sheeple (Michael B), Thursday, 27 February 2014 21:05 (ten years ago) link
Ha, yeah - I hit play on the Close Lobsters thing and actually momentarily thought 'oh shit, Real Estate is auto-playing somewhere else'
― Walter Galt, Friday, 28 February 2014 08:11 (ten years ago) link
Randomly heard 'Green Aisles' this morning, and I might be projecting, but, besides the usual suspect, I'm hearing a strong Cure influence in there.

Guess I'm not as far off with the references as I'd thought!
― Evan, Friday, 28 February 2014 14:59 (ten years ago) link
the band they remind me of most sound-wise are probably Mccarthy
― jamiesummerz, Friday, 28 February 2014 15:10 (ten years ago) link
i hear the second and third feelies albums big time
― reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 28 February 2014 15:17 (ten years ago) link
Definitely.
― Evan, Friday, 28 February 2014 15:33 (ten years ago) link
Haven't heard this one yet but I agree that Real Estate has something in common with early Clientele. Their previous albums are recorded like the music is playing in a small venue, or a bar, and you're not front-and-center. Maybe their backs are to you, and their amps are facing the other direction, or maybe their just in the next room. They're a very ambient band in that way.

Wow, check out this dickish review. Reminds me of the early days of Pitchfork.

Boy, Real Estate sure has done it again. Without a doubt, this is another Real Estate album. Atlas has all the hallmarks: clean guitars, open chords, the faintest whiff of melancholy. Unfortunately, it doesn’t begin to approach anything resembling an interesting idea.
i agree with the author. i am so livid that this pleasant guitar pop made by dudes who seem pretty nice from what i've heard is enjoying moderate popularity.
― james franco, Monday, 3 March 2014 14:00 (ten years ago) link
i mean, don't real estate want more out of their music? what ever happened to wanting more? is real estate just waiting it out until their consciousnesses are uploaded into the cloud? does real estate care about anything at all?
― james franco, Monday, 3 March 2014 14:09 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, it was pretty interesting to read that Popmatters review right after reading the Pitchfork one.

This new album is seriously beautiful.
― Treeship, Monday, 3 March 2014 17:44 (ten years ago) link
"Navigator" is my favorite. Chorus reminds me of something I think but I can't figure out what.
― Evan, Monday, 3 March 2014 18:59 (ten years ago) link
The instrumental track "April's Song" is the one i've been playing over and over.
― Treeship, Monday, 3 March 2014 19:51 (ten years ago) link
"Primitive" is great too. This band definitely captures the new jersey i know better than springsteen.
― Treeship, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 01:41 (ten years ago) link
re influences I don't know galaxie 500 that well but I hear some of that in in real estate's earlier, less polished stuff
― anonanon, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 20:40 (ten years ago) link
No one's mentioned a distortion less Ride?
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 4 March 2014 20:46 (ten years ago) link
The "country" one on this is very yo la tengo
― james franco, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 20:46 (ten years ago) link
does bleeker have a track on atlas? wonder years is one of my faves from days.
― mizzell, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 20:59 (ten years ago) link
atlas is great but I miss the valedictory album-ending jam
― anonanon, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 20:59 (ten years ago) link
Bleeker does have a track, though it's not as sunny as Wonder Years.
― Evan, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 21:18 (ten years ago) link
his song on this almost sounds like a christian hymn
― anonanon, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 21:32 (ten years ago) link
which is?
― nostormo, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 21:44 (ten years ago) link
his song i mean
"how might I live"
― anonanon, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 21:45 (ten years ago) link
that's the one that sounds most like Luna.
― nerve_pylon, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 23:31 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, that's my least favorite. :)
― jaymc, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 23:40 (ten years ago) link
^ gets it
― james franco, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 00:15 (ten years ago) link
that was the one that stuck out the most to me when I listened this afternoon
― dmr, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 04:55 (ten years ago) link
it's the one that stands out the most that's for sure but i think it's my least favorite, which isn't to say i dislike it.
― james franco, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 05:00 (ten years ago) link
It's never occurred to me that I should listen to Real Estate, but reading this thread has convinced me I would like them.
― JacobSanders, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 05:16 (ten years ago) link
Real Estate has something in common with early Clientele
going to check them out now.

does anyone remember late 90s indie also-rans Silver Scooter? I basically only know this one song, but I feel like my infatuation with it prefigured my love of Real Estate

Exactly how I feel.
― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 6 March 2014 04:09 (ten years ago) link
Actually it's been obsessing me.
probably not what you're thinking of but Navigator chorus kinda reminds me of the Replacements - Can't Hardly Wait chorus, "lights that flash in the evening..."
― anonanon, Thursday, 6 March 2014 04:34 (ten years ago) link
this album is starting to click for me.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 6 March 2014 05:04 (ten years ago) link
there's a hazy, lilting nostalgic feel to it that i hadn't picked up in their music before.
i wonder if anyone else is getting a mild simon & garfunkel vibe from this.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 6 March 2014 06:04 (ten years ago) link
These guys were a glass of lemonade on an 89-degree afternoon two years ago at Pitchfork Festival, but, man this album is mush. It's The Ocean Blue again.

Closest I've come to a maybe is Pink Frost by The Chills. Still browsing my library...
― Evan, Thursday, 6 March 2014 13:32 (ten years ago) link
Maybe a Bats song... I'm figuring there isn't a really direct example, but I'm not sure.

Really top notch song there by the Bats though.
Highly recommend it to other Real Estate fans.

I was just listening to Pink Frost and thinking I wish more pop sounded like this!
