I like it quite a bit from Strandbar onwards, fwiw, but it feels frustratingly lopsided as a single listen.

That's a really great comparison. I was trying to put my finger on who they reminded me of but all I could come up with was Sebastien Tellier in his most playful mode.

I interviewed Todd the other week. Highlights included him telling me that the only reason any man DJs is to "make the ladies wet"

I guess the possibility of him being on my team was too good to be true, and sort of tricky since I'm convinced he's actually a distant relative.

The husk in Ferrys voice is really shocking to me. There's a geriatric buzz, the way WS Burroughs voice would appear in 80s avant music, and it was weird to hear an old man in a modern landscape. I couldn't believe this was Ferry at first- I haven't heard any recent singing from him, and wonder if the Jazz Age was intentionally instrumental because of the change in his tone. Or is he affecting something here?

It's just a really understated and hushed vocal from Ferry, not the kind of thing he typically does.

He's lost a lot of range -- it's rasped and gotten more epicene with age -- but as recently as 2010 he didn't sound like this.

I love Ferry, love Palmer's "Johnny and Mary," even loved the idea of Ferry covering it, but I just thought this cover sucked all the life out of the wonderful original.

Alfonso Muskedunder is kind of goofy but I really like it.

Not really sure who Brian Ferry is but I dig his voice and his contribution to that track upthread

Ferry is a god; I find his politics reprehensible but the dude's just made too many records I adore to give in to give in to that.

Here's the only statement on his "politics" I could find:

"I would support a Cameron government. I have met him, and he’s a bright guy. I hope they do well. I don’t like the way the present Government has done things, most of all putting my son in prison for four and a half months, totally unlawfully ... and that’s not just my opinion: judges, all sorts, have said it was a stitch-up. It was politically motivated. The poor lad just wants to live the traditional country life".[53]

Compared to what we consider "conservatism" in America this comes off rather mild.

No I mean it's weird to see Ferry called reprehensible for being a mild Tory (and I doubt a lifelong one) with a pro-hunting son. He's not exactly Ted Nugent.

The Johnny & Mary cover's weak though.

The Ramones cover of the Sonny Bono written Needles and Pins as produced by convicted murder Phil Spector pretty much destroys the idea of me giving a fuck what the personal politics of an artist might be. ~ rolls eyes ~

Yeah I'm underwhelmed but not really surprised given that the strongest stuff here has previously been released and the best new track is the one they leaked.
