I like this album but could have done without the Bryan Ferry song.

is "Oh Joy" the unanimous clear standout here?

"Jiggle It" - 2 in a Zoo (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 23 March 2014 17:41 (ten years ago) link

is "Oh Joy" the unanimous clear standout here?

assumed of the non-singles it'd be "delorean dynamite", which i've already heard on the radio and seen in track lists

though agreeing with matt dc for the most part now

lex pretend, Sunday, 23 March 2014 17:51 (ten years ago) link

I like it quite a bit from Strandbar onwards, fwiw, but it feels frustratingly lopsided as a single listen.

Matt DC, Sunday, 23 March 2014 18:05 (ten years ago) link

Oh Joy is def not the standout for me.

coops all on coops tbh (crüt), Sunday, 23 March 2014 18:09 (ten years ago) link

I love the first set of tracks. They have a total Rinder & Lewis feel to them.

"Oh Joy" hasn't really grown on me yet.

That's a really great comparison. I was trying to put my finger on who they reminded me of but all I could come up with was Sebastien Tellier in his most playful mode.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 23 March 2014 21:53 (ten years ago) link

damn how cool would a Tellier/Terje collab LP be

cooler than the other side of the pillow

I really love the first part too. "Preben Goes to Acapulco" reminds me of Zeus B. Held a little bit.

forcing myself not to listen to this until my LP shows up but I am stupidly excited for this album

-___- not happy about this cover but I don't think I could ever be happy about a cover of this perfect song

How about that husk.

Hinklepicker, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 07:28 (ten years ago) link

Who, Ferry's? He's amazing I mean it's a great cover but the wiriness of the original, the cold delivery

continually topping myself (flamboyant goon tie included), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 08:03 (ten years ago) link

it's album time

ciderpress, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 13:07 (ten years ago) link

I interviewed Todd the other week. Highlights included him telling me that the only reason any man DJs is to "make the ladies wet"

online hardman, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 13:46 (ten years ago) link

I guess the possibility of him being on my team was too good to be true, and sort of tricky since I'm convinced he's actually a distant relative.

Eric H., Tuesday, 25 March 2014 14:09 (ten years ago) link

The husk in Ferrys voice is really shocking to me. There's a geriatric buzz, the way WS Burroughs voice would appear in 80s avant music, and it was weird to hear an old man in a modern landscape. I couldn't believe this was Ferry at first- I haven't heard any recent singing from him, and wonder if the Jazz Age was intentionally instrumental because of the change in his tone. Or is he affecting something here?

Yarl Kastremski (bendy), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 15:51 (ten years ago) link

It's just a really understated and hushed vocal from Ferry, not the kind of thing he typically does.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 21:59 (ten years ago) link

He's lost a lot of range -- it's rasped and gotten more epicene with age -- but as recently as 2010 he didn't sound like this.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 22:04 (ten years ago) link

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 22:20 (ten years ago) link

April 8

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 22:33 (ten years ago) link

oh god that bryan ferry thing is dreadful

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Wednesday, 26 March 2014 17:44 (ten years ago) link

I love Ferry, love Palmer's "Johnny and Mary," even loved the idea of Ferry covering it, but I just thought this cover sucked all the life out of the wonderful original.

Alfonso Muskedunder is kind of goofy but I really like it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 March 2014 21:24 (ten years ago) link

Not really sure who Brian Ferry is but I dig his voice and his contribution to that track upthread

whoa dayo, you need to come over to my place, which is halfway around the world from you, and listen to some roxy music records with me stat

Ha yes I want to!

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 March 2014 00:54 (ten years ago) link

Ferry is a god; I find his politics reprehensible but the dude's just made too many records I adore to give in to give in to that.

a duiving caTCH, a stuolllen bayeeeess (jamescobo), Thursday, 27 March 2014 07:19 (ten years ago) link

Here's the only statement on his "politics" I could find:

"I would support a Cameron government. I have met him, and he’s a bright guy. I hope they do well. I don’t like the way the present Government has done things, most of all putting my son in prison for four and a half months, totally unlawfully ... and that’s not just my opinion: judges, all sorts, have said it was a stitch-up. It was politically motivated. The poor lad just wants to live the traditional country life".[53]

Compared to what we consider "conservatism" in America this comes off rather mild.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 March 2014 10:52 (ten years ago) link

Yeah you must have a low bar for reprehensible politics

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Thursday, 27 March 2014 10:57 (ten years ago) link

lol for a second I thought Todd Terje had supported a Cameron government

abcfsk, Thursday, 27 March 2014 10:59 (ten years ago) link

every day the bar gets lowered. Yesterday the former secretary of defense said a monkey was smarter than Barack Obama.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 March 2014 11:00 (ten years ago) link

No I mean it's weird to see Ferry called reprehensible for being a mild Tory (and I doubt a lifelong one) with a pro-hunting son. He's not exactly Ted Nugent.

The Johnny & Mary cover's weak though.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Thursday, 27 March 2014 11:02 (ten years ago) link

The Ramones cover of the Sonny Bono written Needles and Pins as produced by convicted murder Phil Spector pretty much destroys the idea of me giving a fuck what the personal politics of an artist might be. ~ rolls eyes ~

Popture, Thursday, 27 March 2014 11:59 (ten years ago) link

Alfonso Muskedunder is next-level

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 March 2014 23:57 (ten years ago) link

This album is making me so happy right now. Can't wait to own it in just over a week.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 28 March 2014 01:35 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I'm underwhelmed but not really surprised given that the strongest stuff here has previously been released and the best new track is the one they leaked.

ewar woowar (or something), Friday, 28 March 2014 12:52 (ten years ago) link

i like the palmer cover a lot, dunno why it's so poorly received here

I like the expansive quality of the opening tracks. Clearly not designed for the dancefloor, but enjoyable nonetheless.

this is like saying "this sounds like electronic music to me!" but the opening five minutes of this record reminds me of '80s klaus schulze
