have u revised yr view of inspector norse as 'cheesy dance music that is also boring'

a respected member of the hip-hop criticism community (nakhchivan), Thursday, 3 April 2014 17:47 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, it took a while to grow on me. I probably still prefer the earlier edits though.

Me too and I usually don't find my people all that sexy.

Plus, I'm convinced he's like my eighth cousin.

actually iirc before I deleted it my Scruff profile read "Todd Terje's hand in marriage" under "WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR"

funny and lolexander (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 3 April 2014 20:33 (ten years ago) link

Todd Terrier (as in the dog) would probably be the closest pronounciation-wise. Definitely more of a yay than a jay at the end there.

longneck, Thursday, 3 April 2014 20:44 (ten years ago) link

this beard madness must stop

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Thursday, 3 April 2014 21:26 (ten years ago) link

i've had a beard for almost all of the time between, like, mid-2005 and now

a victory for dumb jokes or a failure?

ha as the subsequent million posts proved, it's just weird that so few have heard of todd terry!

lex pretend, Friday, 4 April 2014 06:42 (ten years ago) link

(i mean, so few people who have heard of todd terje, ie are into dance music, have not heard of house legend todd terry)

lex pretend, Friday, 4 April 2014 06:42 (ten years ago) link

I don't think it is a case of being ignorant of Todd Terry I mean as well as being a legend he dented the charts with bat mobile, just incredulity that someone would attempt such a crap pun for a moniker.

xelab, Friday, 4 April 2014 06:51 (ten years ago) link

I think it's brill

, Friday, 4 April 2014 06:52 (ten years ago) link

It isn't that bad I suppose, I just meant goofy humour in dance music is such a rarity is probably why the pun wasn't understood by some.

xelab, Friday, 4 April 2014 07:01 (ten years ago) link

This album gets better with additional listens but skip the the Ferry track every time. It's either really bad or I'm missing something...

skip, Friday, 4 April 2014 15:01 (ten years ago) link

the ferry track is good and i never skip it

ciderpress, Friday, 4 April 2014 15:10 (ten years ago) link

ferry track is great but i'm not sure i'd stan hard for it, i could see it getting overplayed v quickly. funny tho that ferry was going to record it regardless and terje just sorta took what he could get and threw it on the album

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Friday, 4 April 2014 15:14 (ten years ago) link

yeah it sounds out of place because it's more like a Ferry track that Todd Terje co-produced. but it's good. a pleasant little island on the album.

coops all on coops tbh (crüt), Friday, 4 April 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link

yeah i think it definitely works well within the album's sequencing/flow. also excited for husky-voiced ferry to start releasing things, is he singing like this on his current tour?

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Friday, 4 April 2014 15:50 (ten years ago) link

According to the Guardian review this week, Terje has gone on the record as saying he didn't actually get a chance to finish the album and it does show.

Matt DC, Friday, 4 April 2014 15:58 (ten years ago) link

can't ask for any extensions when it's album time

Merdeyeux, Friday, 4 April 2014 19:25 (ten years ago) link

haha that's great, a little skeptical terje is in fact dance music's most reluctant superstar

balls, Friday, 4 April 2014 19:28 (ten years ago) link

yeah, I'm not sure by what definition he's a superstar and he doesn't seem particularly reluctant...

skip, Friday, 4 April 2014 20:39 (ten years ago) link

nice Scream Tracker shoutout in the FACT piece!

also the 1983 Open University presenter look up there just gave me... strange feelings

It looks like a 90s macworld article

brimstead, Friday, 4 April 2014 22:36 (ten years ago) link

Minus the big arp. Maybe an ironic "our sound cards burn rubber" 90s ad

brimstead, Friday, 4 April 2014 22:37 (ten years ago) link

Complete album stream for those of us who recycle, follow speed limits, don't steal, and aren't music journalists.

Congratulations! And my condolences. (Sanpaku) wrote this at 2014-03-31 16:24:15.000

Missed this! Regardless, my mp3s downloaded from Amazon this morning and I'm listening right now. I love the Bryan Ferry thing, although I have to admit I really don't know his other stuff other than Avalon. I especially like the synths that come in after "Runnin' around..." I agree that the early part of the album would benefit from a 73 degree day. It s definitely a harsh contrast with the chilly gloom outside, but I bet I'll be jamming it pretty hard this summer.

Alfonso Muskedunder is kind of goofy but I really like it.

Talking about music:

“House and techno DJs — they’re some of the most serious musicians around,” the 32-year-old Norwegian producer says. “The music I really like has a humorous edge to it, and I feel like humor comes when artists have some success. They have the energy to do something funny.”

"Svensk Sås" should have been titled "Sås all over me"

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Tuesday, 8 April 2014 14:00 (ten years ago) link

What am I hearing in the Swing Star tracks? Is it "Love On A Real Train" on part 1? I'm also getting some themes in part 2 that remind me of the stuff that CFCF sampled on Continent. Not sure what it is though.

I'm loving this album btw. I wasn't quite as hot on the Arps, Snooze 4 Love, etc, as you guys were, but I think that Album is very tight. I generally prefer lush, expansive sounds, and this album is certainly lush and expansive.

I don't think the name is too groanworthy. It might be in the hands of a less chill musician, but Terje codes as so pleasantly nonchalant and cool that the Todd Terry riff shouldn't be taken as some kind of overwrought witticism. If anything I think it's a gentle shoutout more than an ironic appropriation. Terje doesn't seem like the type to mock.

Number 21 in the mid week UK album charts at the moment. Had no idea how this was going to sell.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 20:04 (ten years ago) link

seems weird that people would love the album and not be keen on the singles, all the productions under his name feel very much of a piece. i mean 3/4 of it's the arps shows up on the album! it's not like this is one of those situations where a producer makes an album with a vastly different tone than the singles (ie: nico jaar, james blake, etc)

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 9 April 2014 20:12 (ten years ago) link

kinda love the johnny and mary remake. the music seems uninspired to me, maybe given my memory of the upbeat original. i did like the billowy synths that come in at about the 1:30 mark. and, of course, the nostalgic link this draws in my mind to the original elevates it for me.

but it's ferry's voice that sells it. he has a resigned, sad, gravelly voice that sounds like the way bill murray sounded when murray sang ferry's more than this in lost in translation.

I didn't dislike the singles at all. I just felt a little wanting listening to them, not through any defect of the music itself but perhaps more that it was a little too light, that it ended so soon. I think the weightiness of the album format suits Terje. His music has a pleasantly light quality that might manifest a little on the wispy side in single and EP form. Giving him an album medium balances things out nicely.

fennel cartwright, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 20:38 (ten years ago) link

some ppl just needed it to be album time

i listened to this earlier today, but i'll need to listen to it a bunch more before i have an opinion

To redeem the download from my vinyl copy I just had to go to toddterjesawesomedownloadpage. Love this guy.

Had my first walk in the sun listening to this album today. It sounded so great. My favourite moment on the album right now is Strandbar going into Delorean Dynamite, it's such a great switch.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 10 April 2014 21:07 (ten years ago) link

oh yeah, that's definitely a highlight.
