i mean they gave KING 1 1/2 star or something - this is very odd and kind of heartening tbh

Not as great as Love/Hate (could not have expected that), but very good.

Mariah's voice coming in to start the 2nd verse of "My Love" juss made me really happy.

Weirdly Mariah makes perfect sense in his production style, where excessive, overwrought singing meets excessive, overwrought baroque beats.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 March 2009 01:13 (fifteen years ago) link

straight off liking this a little more than Love/Hate, but I'm worried that this is just because it is more straightforward frontloaded pop affair where LH hid some of the best hooks 3/4 into tracks (Nikki!). Put It Down is nicely demented tho.

Sori 4 the liveblogging.

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Friday, 6 March 2009 01:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't really get the "rubbish singer" stuff levelled at this guy rilly. Put It Down has a really great vocal performance (or should that be performances? this is some Tusk shit right here) where the cut up half line jumps are really addictive, great way to crack out the rhythms of his lines.

Sweat it out what do you remind me of?

plaxico have you ever heard dude sing live on TV or anything like that? he uses (NEEDS) a ton of subtle un-T-Pain-like AutoTune

let "free dom" ring (some dude), Friday, 6 March 2009 02:18 (fifteen years ago) link

who gives a shit

anywayz the RS review is obviously retroactive props for his first, probably-better album

peep game on gas prices (deej), Friday, 6 March 2009 02:24 (fifteen years ago) link

The only times he busts out with the auto-tune abuse on the (first, haven't heard the new one yet or paid that close attention to the leaks) album are "Mama" and then end of "She Needs My Love". The former wins points for being the least obvious moment to do so. And, as deej says

My mistake. I read "subtle un-T-Pain-like AutoTune" as "unsubtle T-Pain-like AutoTune".

messageboard killa/ilx gorilla (The Brainwasher), Friday, 6 March 2009 03:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Okay first impressions: Dream put out another great record, it's just as good as the first one I'd say... even songs that I wasn't really that excited about like "My Love" work in the context of the record, but honestly the album really gets started for me with "Put It Down". The high point is the "Love v. Money"/"Love v. Money 2"/"Fancy" (which reminds me of Ne-Yo kind of...)/"Right Side of My Brain" (they really beefed this up from the demo) suite which is just INCREDIBLE... and "Kelly's 12 Play" which is prob my fave song, it's like the "Luv Songs" of this album. He described LvM as "Love/Hate on crack" and I think that's kind of apt, there's nothing here that's that radically different from the first record (besides "Fancy"), but it takes the best parts of the first album and runs w/ them.

You guys will deconstruct the album way better than I can, but these are just my initial thoughts after 1 listen.
