NE-YO v THE DREAM

Okay first impressions: Dream put out another great record, it's just as good as the first one I'd say... even songs that I wasn't really that excited about like "My Love" work in the context of the record, but honestly the album really gets started for me with "Put It Down". The high point is the "Love v. Money"/"Love v. Money 2"/"Fancy" (which reminds me of Ne-Yo kind of...)/"Right Side of My Brain" (they really beefed this up from the demo) suite which is just INCREDIBLE... and "Kelly's 12 Play" which is prob my fave song, it's like the "Luv Songs" of this album. He described LvM as "Love/Hate on crack" and I think that's kind of apt, there's nothing here that's that radically different from the first record (besides "Fancy"), but it takes the best parts of the first album and runs w/ them.

You guys will deconstruct the album way better than I can, but these are just my initial thoughts after 1 listen.

wow an R&B singer referencing other songs in his songs in 2009. shocker. (and ftr I think "Sweat It Out"/"Purple Kisses" is more repetition of a motif than self-referential)

dunno about the new version of "right side of my brain" - the tone of the song is completely changed

otoh the build up is almost overwhelming in this new form so i can't complain really

yeah it did, but I like the new version it's much more epic. the demo was a little too sparse.

"you love me baby/then you unlove me baby" is such a great line

I meant "you touch me baby/then you untouch me baby" but yeah

really think this is on an equal footing with the first tbh.

starting to think it might be a little weirder too, under the surface. I might take that back later, the first sounded pretty bonkers for a while. Gonna play this to death before the novelty wears off. Sweat it out is killing me.

don't really watch tv, not that the-dream is likely to show up on Irish tv, but yeah, maybe his vocal range isn't right, but his phrasing is really weird and polyrhythmic and expressive and interesting. On this alb more than the last. Fancy and Sweat it out are unfuckwithable sofar imo.

Yes those are all great bands. I like old soul music like Marvin Gaye but stuff like this is a right load of old rubbish, it's just bad hip hop with some bloke moaning about how he loves his bird on it.
