oh shit, "Fancy" is so so good

lolhaha @ there being a song called "Mr. Yeah" I did not notice that until you said it

Haven't heard the new Muhsinah yet, will do so. Thx 4 the headzup

Terius (The Reverend), Friday, 6 March 2009 06:14 (fifteen years ago) link

if "sweat it out" is "purple kisses pt. 2" then "kelly's 12 play" is "luv songs pt. 2" right

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Friday, 6 March 2009 06:15 (fifteen years ago) link

lol @ "now we're doing it to dream's love/hate" - kinda wish he'd have cleared up once and for all the spelling snafus. "now we're doing it to dream's love slash hate!"

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Friday, 6 March 2009 06:17 (fifteen years ago) link

dunno about the new version of "right side of my brain" - the tone of the song is completely changed

― wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Friday, March 6, 2009 6:07 AM (50 minutes ago)

yeah it did, but I like the new version it's much more epic. the demo was a little too sparse.

"you love me baby/then you unlove me baby" is such a great line

messageboard killa/ilx gorilla (The Brainwasher), Friday, 6 March 2009 07:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I meant "you touch me baby/then you untouch me baby" but yeah

messageboard killa/ilx gorilla (The Brainwasher), Friday, 6 March 2009 07:03 (fifteen years ago) link

really think this is on an equal footing with the first tbh.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 March 2009 08:17 (fifteen years ago) link

starting to think it might be a little weirder too, under the surface. I might take that back later, the first sounded pretty bonkers for a while. Gonna play this to death before the novelty wears off. Sweat it out is killing me.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 March 2009 08:24 (fifteen years ago) link

don't really watch tv, not that the-dream is likely to show up on Irish tv, but yeah, maybe his vocal range isn't right, but his phrasing is really weird and polyrhythmic and expressive and interesting. On this alb more than the last. Fancy and Sweat it out are unfuckwithable sofar imo.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 March 2009 08:41 (fifteen years ago) link

the back half of this is really weird sonically yeah, esp "fancy" into "right side of my brain"

<4 when those drums come back in at the end of fancy <4

Haha both stupid R and B rubbish.

Fav Bands: UB40, The Kooks, Heaven 17, U2

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 March 2009 09:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes those are all great bands. I like old soul music like Marvin Gaye but stuff like this is a right load of old rubbish, it's just bad hip hop with some bloke moaning about how he loves his bird on it.

Freaking out a bit at how good this is. She got it fixed just so I could fuck it up!

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 March 2009 10:31 (fifteen years ago) link

ships laughs at me for liking that kind of thing the first time, but The-Dream himself knows he's onto something good.

I haven't heard this yet, but looking forward. I will make a So So Scandalous entry for each song maybe.

speaking of which, would anyone like to assure me there's no songs like "ditch that" on this album before i listen to it?

Not as great as Love/Hate (could not have expected that), but very good.

WOTM also has my favorite Kanye rap in some time (and that synth found all over New Order records circa 1989)

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 March 2009 19:08 (fifteen years ago) link

My initial impression is that the record isn't quite as lush or hooky as the first. I REALLY like "Walkin' on the Moon", "Fancy", and especially "Kelly's 12 Play", which somehow lived up the title and then some.

The Reverend (rev), Friday, 6 March 2009 19:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, and "Mr. Yeah" has the most brilliant bit on the album with the whole "lovin' on my ella/ touchin' on my ella/ chillin' with my ella" riff.

haha all this tardy ilm love for the-dream is funny for some reason

My initial impression is that the record isn't quite as lush or hooky as the first.

i agree with this - i think it's missing something like "purple kisses" or "luv songs" (that said the ballads on this are awesome) (maybe sensual is the word, in terms of production), and i'm not sold on the tranciness of the "love vs. money" pairing, but the sonics in general are just sooo massive. tricky and LOS took it next universe w/ the beats

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Friday, 6 March 2009 22:01 (fifteen years ago) link

let it be known though that i wasn't enamored w/ love/hate until feb or march of last year (then it became one of my fav records of the decade) so i know this is going grow on me

there is seriously so much going on in this album...am going to need some time for it to sink in. holy shit, the orchestral climax to 'love vs money pt 2' though.

lex pretend, Friday, 6 March 2009 22:11 (fifteen years ago) link

for those who didn't keep up w/ the leaks compare this demo of "right side of my brain"

http://www.zshare.net/audio/56637281807e9b14/

with the one on the album for a good perspective on how ridiculous these arrangements are

so...what is up with that intro

Getting it. I think this is MORE detailed, MORE lush.
