read an interview w future where he said hes not having superstar features anymore cause its too much hassle getting everyone to show up and sign off and this album wouldve been out a year ago if it wasnt for them so theres that

True story is his arrival I guess but same damn time > any song on it

or 'gone to the moon'

Didn't he once upon a time say Future Hendrix would have no features? lol smh

posi riot (some dude), Monday, 21 April 2014 14:17 (ten years ago) link

and then future hendrix never came out

thanks.

Don't get the dislike for the Pusha verse in this thread. a couple parts I can see but as a whole it's straight

nova, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 00:16 (ten years ago) link

there is a real nitpicky element to this thread

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 03:19 (ten years ago) link

ILX? Being nitpicky?

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 03:25 (ten years ago) link

this album has some really incredible moments and i wish it had been tightened up just a little more - feel like i shouldn't have to be cherrypicking from it or gritting my teeth through kanye or pusha

the andré track is actually really unexpectedly great though! "look ahead", "i be u", "special", "side effects" all brilliant. i never thought "sh!t" was more than a minor pleasure but it turns out i forgot what a booming entrance it makes

lex pretend, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 17:15 (ten years ago) link

"look ahead" kinda gives me "power" vibes?? in a good way

lex pretend, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 17:19 (ten years ago) link

the first album was so in the synthed out mike will zone it had a real sense cohesion and culture, this one sounds way more general and cosmopolitan, feels a lil unfocused, lots of samples, a bunch of features from regular ass rappers that dont really fit imo, idk

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 17:26 (ten years ago) link

futures whole voice and mode on this one feels really tuned up too, he was more mellow last time, thats not a judgement tho feelin the new places hes going with his voice

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 17:29 (ten years ago) link

yeah that's kind of what makes its highs so high and its missteps so irritating

xp

lex pretend, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 17:30 (ten years ago) link

mike will only has 3 tracks on this i feel like we might look back on 'honest' as one of the big signals that metro boomin has sort of passed him up as atlanta's hottest rap producer (pop/r&b a diff story)

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 17:33 (ten years ago) link

as much as i love the "Honest" and "The Blanguage" beats, that seems really premature, i don't see it for him like that yet. Mike Will has been kinda sorta shooting blanks for a minute, though.

posi riot (some dude), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 18:20 (ten years ago) link

just:

smoothed out by a T-painian dollop

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 18:24 (ten years ago) link

wait i was sort of conflating metro boomin and dun deal, lol

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 18:25 (ten years ago) link

anyway i think all of the following are hotter than mike will right now as far as pure rap goes

dun deal
metro boomin
808 mafia
london on da track

i can't tell if mike will "fell off" in the lugerian sense or if he's just moved onto a totally different class of rappers

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 18:26 (ten years ago) link

different class of artists**

between dj mustard, detail and those aforementioned producers i've been wondering if mike will is already "over" like 6 months after we all hailed him as music's new kingmaker

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 18:27 (ten years ago) link

6 months is the new lifespan.

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 18:28 (ten years ago) link

ya the producer hype cycle is brutal

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 19:20 (ten years ago) link

I still say that the Move That Dope beat is vicious. Put some other non-song-ruining guests on there (Tip, Kendrick, even Yo Gotti or the Gucci Mane) and the song would have blown up massively. Pusha was the wrong call, Pharrell's verse is dope but weird and Casino, as much as I love him, doesn't help either.

longneck, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 19:33 (ten years ago) link

otm was thinking this morning it'd be better even if the chorus was just looped for 2 mins instead of the features

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 19:40 (ten years ago) link

dont like pharells verse neither

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 19:40 (ten years ago) link

or his hat, folks

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 19:41 (ten years ago) link

sidenote since he didn't do the beat but it'd be cool if Pharrell was still good at minimalist beats these days, as opposed to it being the style he's worst at

nova, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:03 (ten years ago) link

I think its sequence is all fucked up. I'm trying a HARD SHIT at the front, ATL stuff in the middle, soft serve stuff at the end (and adding "Real and True") and seeing how that treats me

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:54 (ten years ago) link

what songs = ATL stuff? i'm sure it's obvious to more educated rap fans, but i'm curious

alpine static, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 22:53 (ten years ago) link

the Andre 3000 song, for starters. It's his best verse since -- hell, I don't even know.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 22:56 (ten years ago) link

i guess i thought he meant stuff that was super ATL influenced on the beat? i dunno. even i know where Andre is from

alpine static, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 22:58 (ten years ago) link

i haven't even heard that song, pulling it up now

wait, is this the "bitches" song they did at Coachella? kinda disliked that one

alpine static, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 22:58 (ten years ago) link

i dont like the andre song but apparently i'm pretty alone on that

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 23:00 (ten years ago) link

nah it's pretty weak. def. one of the dud post-Idlewild Andre raps too

nova, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 23:02 (ten years ago) link

it's definitely kinda jarring to have Andre 3K show up with by far the most ignorant shit on a supposedly ignorant rapper's album

posi riot (some dude), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 23:49 (ten years ago) link

Don't like that song

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 23:49 (ten years ago) link

is Future supposedly ignorant?

alpine static, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 00:01 (ten years ago) link

tbh I haven't listened to Andre's words, just the flow. This album is long. "I Be U" was the other standout besides "Move That Dope."

well and lots of white people my age (37) who think "good" rap ended with public enemy, atcq and/or outkast and all new stuff sucks...i see the point

lol at the idea that there isn't still a strong and very vocal army of rap purists (of all ages) who see people like future, rich homie quan, young thug et al as destructive forces

one might even go as far as to say that the real racist is the guy who thinks only white people hate on "ignorant" rap

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 02:27 (ten years ago) link

when rappers sing thats bad, give me a rapper who doesnt do singing any day of the week folks

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 02:37 (ten years ago) link

yeah this is right, the beat and hook still elevate it enough but that's despite the verses (i like pharrell, casino is better than he's credited for but only in terms of energy, future is only adequate, pusha is horrible). i assume remixes might solve this for us in the end

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 12:07 (ten years ago) link
