tracks 1-5 on the Pusha album are dope, "King Push" is incredible, but it really falls off a cliff until the Pharrell track at the end

Why include "Never Satisfied," a sketch that fades out at 2 min, and leave off "Fo Real," which was released quietly this winter but is a fucking banger?

xxpost Andre 3000 on the "Bitch" chorus in 2014 is so....weird, like he's Ron Burgundy reading it off a teleprompter and not realizing the context. even in Outkast's pimp player days he was much more playful than bluntly dismissive

I like "Fo Real" but the Drake is FED UP with you haters verse on that is even more lame/tryhard than his usual

a lot of good songs have been out there that didn't make the album..."How It Was," "Substitute Everything," to say nothing of all the hooks he just gave to other artists instead of writing a full-on Future song. this is one of those albums that's hard for me to listen to without constantly A&R-ing better versions in my head. xp

xpost I'm not the world's hugest Drake fan by any means but I think one of his better joints was the one on his latest album where he talked about his relationship w/ his dad. it was actually affecting.

was that song "Too Much?" I don't like it but I did think it was one of the rare times where his flow hasn't sounded stiff as hell

"I Be U" is so great

although if he'd put a Ciara verse on it it would've been an all-time classic

nah, he's just the most offensively bad part.

mr hudson actually wrote that song and future probably should've strong armed him off the final version but who knows what the power dynamics were there or whether hudson would've relinquished the track if he knew he wasn't getting a feature

listened to whiney's reconfiguration today, minus "real and true," and i think that might be better than pluto. kinda sags in the middle though—much as i like it i don't think "karate chop" works in an album context per se

"Karate Chop" works as a palate cleanser.

fwiw, future said a few days ago that he wants to put out 'future hendrix' in december, and that it'd be songs like 'i be u'

i don't believe it'll happen but i sure hope it does

every year there's a rapper who says they're putting out two albums in a year and the last time it happened was plies in 2008 or something

right right i'm just saying i like the idea that he's still personally into the idea of putting out an album of "i be u" style songs

i will say though, from the way he's talked about this album, it feels a little bit like he's built up this sort of false dichotomy in his head where he thinks he can only either do very aggressive, somewhat by-the-books bangers or much more melodic singer songwriter-y stuff. where i think what made pluto's singles and his post-pluto features/hooks so great was the way he kinda let those two sensibilities bleed into eachother

I'm sensing this is an unpopular opinion, but "I Be U" is a big step down from the ballads on Pluto

mmm yeah don't agree at all, but then I think "Neva End" is def. better than "Turn On the Lights" and ppl seem to love that last one, so I might have a slightly lower opinion of the Pluto ballads as a whole than others.

still think that harmonizing moment toward the end of "I Be U" is amazing

i definitely don't think anything on this album is on the level of "Turn On The Lights" and "Neva End" but when "I Be U" showed up in my first listen it was definitely a relief, and that song has been sticking with me.

I Be U towers over the rest of it for me, feel like I made a post to this effect not very long ago but oh well, bears repeating

massive LOL though at how a song that tender is followed up by "I'M COVERED IN MONEY I'M COVERED IN MONEY" over imposing luger-y beats

learning that detail was also behind "i luh ya papi" and "jealous" makes a lot of sense, all three songs feel like melodic siblings

'i won' is worth contraristanning for i think, even as a sad brundlefly of a song

"Covered n Money" is such a mess

"Blood, Sweat, Tears" does = "You Deserve It" only the latter is amazing and the former, not so much

Special is my favorite, I think.

"special" is incredible. i mean, just for the mix of compassion and contempt and confusion in the line "you ain't even tryna be special" alone

i like to imagine Future is crooning it to Young Thug after reading deej's tweet about how the name "Young Thug" is a deliberate subversion of rappers trying to be "different"
