Future - Honest (2014)

right right i'm just saying i like the idea that he's still personally into the idea of putting out an album of "i be u" style songs

i will say though, from the way he's talked about this album, it feels a little bit like he's built up this sort of false dichotomy in his head where he thinks he can only either do very aggressive, somewhat by-the-books bangers or much more melodic singer songwriter-y stuff. where i think what made pluto's singles and his post-pluto features/hooks so great was the way he kinda let those two sensibilities bleed into eachother

I'm sensing this is an unpopular opinion, but "I Be U" is a big step down from the ballads on Pluto

mmm yeah don't agree at all, but then I think "Neva End" is def. better than "Turn On the Lights" and ppl seem to love that last one, so I might have a slightly lower opinion of the Pluto ballads as a whole than others.

still think that harmonizing moment toward the end of "I Be U" is amazing

i definitely don't think anything on this album is on the level of "Turn On The Lights" and "Neva End" but when "I Be U" showed up in my first listen it was definitely a relief, and that song has been sticking with me.

"Turn on the Lights" feels like a once-in-a-career type of song

i mostly loved pluto but after playing this through about five times:

just replace all the songs w/ "Move That Dope" on repeat

but really, forget turn on the lights and neva end, there's nothing on the level of My or You Deserve It really

I Be U towers over the rest of it for me, feel like I made a post to this effect not very long ago but oh well, bears repeating

massive LOL though at how a song that tender is followed up by "I'M COVERED IN MONEY I'M COVERED IN MONEY" over imposing luger-y beats

learning that detail was also behind "i luh ya papi" and "jealous" makes a lot of sense, all three songs feel like melodic siblings

'i won' is worth contraristanning for i think, even as a sad brundlefly of a song

"Covered n Money" is such a mess

"Blood, Sweat, Tears" does = "You Deserve It" only the latter is amazing and the former, not so much

Special is my favorite, I think.

"special" is incredible. i mean, just for the mix of compassion and contempt and confusion in the line "you ain't even tryna be special" alone

i like to imagine Future is crooning it to Young Thug after reading deej's tweet about how the name "Young Thug" is a deliberate subversion of rappers trying to be "different"

This is just not that good, opens great bt gets to be a drag by like track 10. He's obv talented tho (his ballads as said kill his dull bangers), I'm gonna look up some mixtapes before I go into this rehab/therapy I'm doing Monday, any recommendations?

The thing about the ballads v. bangers deal is that he's great at the latter. It's just the ones here suck

i mean when it comes right down to it for me, there's lots of great stuff here, but it feels like work, whereas Pluto was effortless.

when i say Pluto was a grower for me, it's because I couldn't stop going back to it.

with Honest, it's like I am pushing myself to keep listening and harvesting the goods.

yeah i only heard that on the radio once but i was so totally confused that Pharrell had apparently recorded extra bars that they swapped in to replace the best part of the entire song

maybe he recorded that version first and then rewrote his verse at the last minute with the awesome double time part? i dunno

yeah and on top of it all the verse has tons of edits so it sounds even worse. why record a verse of a radio edit that needs heavier redactions than the original? makes no sense

idk if i really get what's up with this album, seems really drab and unlikeable to me. the intro track is great tho.

i agree except "Look Ahead" is one of the most drab and unlikable tracks for me

Stretch from Benz Frienz -> I'll Be Yours is world-beating imo

I do pick and choose from the front half

Think "Look Ahead" is a little interesting just cuz the beat is very un-Runners like, but the drums are weak & not meshed well with the rest of the track

man I remember the golden age of those guys' beats in college, guess there's only so much you can do with that production style though. Still dig "Where the Cash At" ugly drums n all though
