I played Strandbar for my wife and when it got to the piano lick she was like "how can something so simple be so good?"

If anyone wants to direct me to some other albums that are similar to this or Lindstrom, I'd really appreciate that.

i slept on it at the time but the lovelock album (steve moore doing cosmic disco) is excellent.

maybe try the computer incarnations for world peace comps too? the first volume is full of classic cosmic cuts and the second features newer artists, including a fun collab between terje and prins thomas

maybe the secret circuit album from last year too? (tactile galactics) that one might be more acid than cosmic i guess

cifwp comps is a good rec; the milky disco comps are great, too: http://www.discogs.com/Various-MilkyDiscoThreeToTheStars/master/324783

also the gatto fritto LP: http://www.discogs.com/Gatto-Fritto-Gatto-Fritto/master/329150

That Rubber Room song is great. Thanks for the other recommendations, I'll check them out. Think I downloaded hat Secret Circuit album but haven't got round to it yet.

I have the first two Milky Disco compilations which contain some great stuff. I actually have that Gatto Fritto album. Someone (possibly you?) Nominated Beachy Head on the 2011 tracks list and I fell on love with it. That's easily the best song on there but the rest is really enjoyable.

sorry about the lousy sound quality but here's a big room full of people losing their minds to todd playing 'inspector norse' during his live show.

I've heard this a few times through - agree that the best moments have already been released, but it's a neat album.

Not enough people on ILM know enough about Roxy Music. Yes, Bryan Ferry's a bit of a Tory cunt but he is responsible for some of the best music in the history of music so I have to let him off. That said, anyone else think Johnny and Mary could have been taken from the Future Islands album? It really doesn't sound like him.

is Ferry's alleged Toryness a big deal in England? It gets mentioned often.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:23 (ten years ago) link

yeah, he's been quite vocal on things in the past, including some stuff about the magnificence of fascist imagery and stuff like that. his son's been embroiled in a few schemey right-wing things too. it's the one thing that taints his music in my mind. although i did laugh about him reportedly bollocking his son for swearing when they survived an imminent plane accident.

now I'm the grandfather (dog latin), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:30 (ten years ago) link

I knew about his kids but didn't care either way. The line abut Albert Speer or Riefenstahl was dumber, but he 's a rocker and therefore a fool.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:38 (ten years ago) link

Bry's a big fan of country squire pursuits e.g. fox hunting, which pushes a lot of buttons for some people over here

Angkor Waht (Neil S), Friday, 30 May 2014 15:16 (ten years ago) link

it's not just the tory stuff although that is a very valid stick to beat him with. his voice is unlistenable and what i've heard of roxy music is terrible as well

lex pretend, Friday, 30 May 2014 15:29 (ten years ago) link

yes, there's also the "unlistenable" nature of Roxy Music, as lex has scientifically proven in his post above

Angkor Waht (Neil S), Friday, 30 May 2014 15:32 (ten years ago) link

being serious, Lex have you heard Avalon, their final record? It might be more palatable than their earlier art rock stuff.

Angkor Waht (Neil S), Friday, 30 May 2014 15:37 (ten years ago) link

^ good point. i can understand you not liking things like Street Life, but the Avalon album is totally pleasant and wonderful.

I don't particularly like Roxy Music either and Ferry was the second most-talented person called Bryan/Brian in the band, and come on no one cares about Bryan Ferry solo, and his voice is usually this dreary instrument, but the Johnny & Mary cover is actually quite affecting. A lot of it is down to the arrangement, but Ferry doesn't croon as much as he usually does.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 May 2014 16:37 (ten years ago) link

You can slate Ferry's voice but I'd never describe it as dreary. One of the most dynamic and idiosyncratic styles in rock, if say. Anyway never mind.

this might have been mentioned somewhere on this long thread but... i was talking to my norwegian friend abt todd terje & he was saying how the guy who runs the state radio station had refused to play terje's stuff because it 'sounds like beach bar music'. thats when he went & put out 'strandbar' (which means beach bar in norwegian)

Every time I listen to this album I like it less and less, I think that if I didn't know Strandbar/Inspector Norse before listening to it I would probably have given up on it by four tracks in and filed it alongside the Aeroplane album.

Inspector Norse is the only song that still seems separate from the rest album to me. The rest of it flows really well and works as a whole. It's been the perfect soundtrack to some long walks in the sun recently and even though there's been some other albums I've enjoyed a lot this year, this is still by far my favourite.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 03:21 (ten years ago) link

i actually find i like it more and more, i've really gotten quite fond of it as a whole

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 2 July 2014 13:32 (ten years ago) link

I like it a lot as a whole, but also I threw about the half the tracks into a playlist with a bunch of other stuff, and they all sound great on their own too. Actually helps to hear them in isolation.

finally heard this played out at a party this weekend; I was standing outside since it was ungodly hot on the floor, but as soon as it started happening I bolted back inside. VERY glad I did, this song is ridiculously fun to dance to.
