"overrated" I'd agree with that. I think of him as a Julian Clary (pop, camp, silly and a bit limited), where his success seems to indicate that he's thought of as a Chris Morris (genius). and i like both of them.

I think that Tori Amos' version rocks!! IT creeps me out completely. I have never heard the Eminem version. I think hte lyrics are pretty crazy. Even though it creeps me out i think that it is still good.

They are both great versions of the song. The Lyrics are fantastic, and that is much to Mr. Mathers and Bass's credit. Especially to be a)covered with an artist with as much street and industry cred as Ms. Amos; and b) to be in a compilation of songs along with Neil Young, Lou Reed, Lennon & McCartney, Joe Jackson, Bob Geldof, et. al.

I think this question kinds of begs to polarize the audience. I happen to like both Eminem and Tori Amos, But I think that I am going to be one of few the exceptions to the rule.

Hopefully people will be able to enjoy both; for the individual quality each singer brings to the Lyrics.

frankly, I think Eminem's version is scary.. BUT Tori Amos' version is just more appropriate in how she did it. It's more haunting than Em's version--BUT mind you, I didn't exactly dance to Em's version cuz it frightened the hell out of me. You get the idea.

I think that Tori Amos' version is a lot more sympathitic to the wife character, but that Eminem's version is a lot more evocative of the anger that causes things like that to happen.

I like her voice on the verses. I like the restrained and very measured way she's speaking (but not whispering); it sounds like she's actually lulling a baby to sleep. I like that she keeps the "self-awareness" out of her delivery.

what a weird thread.

i was just saying on the other thread that i love how she used the act of covering a song as an aggressive tactic on this album. like the song is a chessboard and she and eminem are on opposite sides of it

it's actually quite remarkable how much the song still works in the mother's voice.

so many little details in her inflection - repeating "me and my daughter", the intake of breath on "on the count of three" where it slips from campy horror into something genuinely chilling
