For me, the biggest subversion came from the presence of the "main" woman (I think her name is Sheila Smith - no relation, I assume/hope.)
I don't think anyone's going to disagree that a huge part of the Jandek canon is thematically obsessed with isolation, disconnection, alienation, etc. So to see a woman who wasn't even born when Blue Corpse was released grinning with delight while Jandek put his guitar neck between her legs (for real) was pretty eye-opening. After 10 years of live shows and 60-odd releases over 36 years, we've seen a hell of a lot from Corwood, but overt on-stage sexual tension was a new one on me.
Beyond flirting/throwing herself at the rep, Sheila commanded the gig on many occasions. She spent WAY more time on the mic than Sterling did overall, and in contrast to the rep's usual demeanor, she actively engaged the audience: making eye contact, having exchanges with specific members of the crowd, getting off stage and wandering around the front row.
One fellow next to me had brought a copy of very early Jandek vinyl, and at one point Sheila noticed it and started berating him to hold it up. He resisted for a long time - he tried hiding it in his arms, with a deer-in-the-headlights stare, but she wouldn't leave him alone until he relented. At another point she got off stage and walked up to a young man who was doing his best to pretend he didn't notice her, keeping his eyes locked on the rep, until she was right next to him, demanding that he pay attention.
So, yeah - a sexually commanding, audience-engaging 20-something woman as the frontperson for "Jandek" was pretty mind-blowing to behold.
