"love you 'til your eyes roll back"; "I'm a put you to bed"

which of these lines was meant to be lechy braggy btw?

r|t|c, Monday, 9 March 2009 23:22 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe it's just a word choice thing, i dunno - always assumed 'lecherous' was the pejorative crosssing the line of cheekier 'lewd' or 'lusty' or whatever, but can't find a dictionary defn to back me up. lech, retch, kvetch.

r|t|c, Monday, 9 March 2009 23:28 (fifteen years ago) link

"love you 'til your eyes roll back" - braggy; not lechy?

"I'm a put you to bed" - neither?

Terius (The Reverend), Monday, 9 March 2009 23:47 (fifteen years ago) link

well isn't "I'ma put you to bed" basically the same braggy statement Ice Cube makes when he says "so deep, putt her butt to sleep," but in less explicit terms? that's how I always heard the song anyway. I mean, "Bed" is the song The-Dream said was too 'mature' to sell to Chris Brown.

Badazz Luhrmann (some dude), Monday, 9 March 2009 23:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Right -- "...put you to bed" in this context is not exactly just literal, is it? It's not "poundin' you down 'til your eyeballs pop out," but still.

(And besides, the same sentence contains "charmingly vulnerable romantic" -- so it's not like I'm saying he's Luther Campbell.)

(lechery as in "intense desire or craving for gratification and excitement")

Andy K, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 01:20 (fifteen years ago) link

but then at the same time this is all part of the attraction too, because he is an underdog in the vein of all your t-pain sad panda interlopers and sundry karoke autotuners

this reminds me -- I can't be the only person who was horribly disappointed at the end of the "Blame It" video when the guy in the panda suit took off the head and it was Jamie, not T-Pain

Badazz Luhrmann (some dude), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 03:05 (fifteen years ago) link

so "mr. yeah" is basically tricky reworking his remix of "touch my body" right? right down to that slight rattling noise even

ok im only 14 seconds into the "my love" video and i've already lost it @ dream and mariah acting out a spousal argument and also mariah as hoodrat

anyone else find it creepy that dream makes the two featured female artists on his albums pretend to be madly in love with him? i always thought that the phone call at the beginning of "livin a lie" was weird and now this video with mariah longingly gazing at magazine covers of him. or is that 'assimilation' part of his genius?

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:51 (fifteen years ago) link

lol i thought you meant kanye for a minute there

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 10:15 (fifteen years ago) link

that video makes "My Love" somewhat entertaining but i still don't get what you guys see in that song, it's so bland. "Touch My Body" was nice but The-Dream writing an entire Mariah album seems like a terrible idea.

Badazz Luhrmann (some dude), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 13:02 (fifteen years ago) link

"My Love" sounds like an inferior "We Belong Together."

see, in a regular r&b context this sort of thing is no great shakes - with dream though it feels particularly unlikely somehow. not just because of looks or artistic credibility, but cos he doesn't even seem like he'd be much of a conversationalist either, more of a chronic mumbler.

(also watching the 'my love' vid, it's interesting comparing his sunglasses style with say t-pain or lil jon. t & lj use the instant glamour to validate the sensitive nerds they secretly are, looking totally regular (uh ok maybe not jon but yknow what i mean) and vulnerable when they take them off; dream almost seems to use them to be sensitive in the first place, because his eyes are even more blank and inscrutable than the glasses. where is he even looking!)

anyway this is striking moreso on l/h since rihanna's a recurring figure - lover/friend/companion-thru-rise-to-stardom, something deeper and more intimate than the usual 3 minute collabo fling. (this doesnt really apply so much to mariah cos her whole thing is always that she fully adores whoever she's with at that moment, including you the listener. so we love her too.) i wouldnt say it was creepy necessarily but it is vaguely unreal yeah, almost like a fantasy. and this is why i invoked stuff like him singing in the mirror, kells posters stuck to his bedroom wall, playing out this world where he's a megastar, celebrities on his arm, keys to prince's corvette dangling lightly in the ignition. his ex knowing he she was wrong - any day now nikki will show up, any day.

isn't it so great when t-pain refs dream at the end of his 'blame it' verse btw!! i don't even know why it's so satisfying, but it really is.

haha that bit totally justifies the existence of "I Luv Your Girl" imo

i just wish it was The-Dream and not Kanye that sang a bit of "I Can't Believe It" on the song they do on the Jamie Foxx record, to complete the circle

btw - yall think i could get a job tagging mp3s for major labels? i just put the love vs money cd into my computer and the whole thing came in as "Love V/S Money" and "kelly's 12 play" was tagged as "kelly" - like, how hard is it to tag an mp3, really?

T-Pain's entire verse is written around references to "I Luv Your Girl" and the whole stuttering vocal hook of "Blame It" is pretty similar, although I might only hear the latter because of the former.

oh. i think you guys pay way more attention to this little corner of RnB than I do.

I fucks with this new T-D album though so I need to get up on all the other stuff. I'll probably go dl Thr33 Ringz. then maybe the J Foxx album and erase the tracks without any guests...

xxxxxxxxxp deej I get what you're saying about not wanting to react negatively to all of the hype around this... I mean, I'm still kind of skeptical about all of the praise this is getting from certain people, but it is a great album and is deserving of the praise so... maybe this will get people to check out more modern r&b - lvm is a great album, but there are lots of others! j holiday just released a really good follow-up album. maybe it isn't as exciting or as much of an 'event'album as LvM but it's a really good record.

about wanting to**

messageboard killa/ilx gorilla (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 06:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyway, I went to buy this and it was SOLD OUT at two different stores. This album really feels like an EVENT - the 106 & Park takeover, sold out a bunch of places, rave reviews, everyone seems excited about it (not just on the internet), which is so cool...

also "mr. yeah" is my new favorite song on this.

yeah it feels really fun to be into the album right now - last time i felt this type of fervor was with carter III i think

where's he gonna debut? top 5? definitely behind U2 and clarkson, will it lose out to swift? if lamb of god can beat out the jonas brothers i think maybe dream can too?

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 07:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I'm thinking top 5 definitely, I think #3 is a possibility. It's #2 on iTunes - I don't know if thats a barometer or anything, but watevs.

i've definitely gone from "initial rush of immediate love" to "well it has this problem and that problem and this part isn't as good as l/h" back to "wow this album is pretty incredible" after listening on good speakers tonight

i was going to write something about this but i think ill just end up posting the thoughts in here. on an unrelated note i again realized tonight how remarkably epic the "love vs money"s are, but also how great of a club track "take u home 2 my mama is", i think now that i've receded from the position of holding it against lvm that the club songs aren't as brilliant and different as something like "playin in her hair" i appreciate how much they're able to work into "take u home 2 my mama," which has a pretty narrow focus in terms of arrangement. but i think if you take the position that the trancey club track is a concerted decision and not them running out of ideas or trend hopping, you can appreciate just how much of that song has dream and tricky's DNA even tho it's unremarkable at first blush. these weird sounds happening (those bells or whatever they are, bleeps and bloops all over), dream's retarded second verse ("i'm like DAMN/ my niggas like **DAMN**/her titties like woooooOOOO/her booty like woooooo"). then the chorus kind of opens up (or at least it did for me)— i had to run right up out the VI/ pop that, i seen you drop that/ now i'm like DO THAT AGAIN/ AYYYY".

in a way i almost appreciate the way that the middle of this album has these seemingly standard arrangements yet they're still incredible— it's like they stopped cheating and are still better than everyone. i mean all the clattering and bursts of noise happening in "love vs money" and "love vs money part 2". shit is really the apocalypse.

then again im a stan

btw the lyrics booklet is so nerdy— dude has things labeled as "post-hook" and "b-sec"

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 07:26 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah there really is a lot crammed into these songs, I mean "love vs. money pt.2" is only 4 minutes long but there are entire MOVEMENTS within that one movement. just from a production standpoint the album is incredible, the little sounds in the background and really make the album (that beep or whatever it is in the beginning of "take u home 2 my mama" before the massive synths come in is so WHIMSICAL, it's one of my favorite moments on the album). I think the thing a lot of people connect with in The-Dream's music is that it all sounds like it's overflowing with creative energry, like it's a place where Dream, Tricky & LOS can show off all their cool new tracks that they'll put to use until the NEXT Dream album comes out.

messageboard killa/ilx gorilla (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 07:32 (fifteen years ago) link

the whole booklet is retarded actually, dream is such a doofus. on top of being an awful dresser he's always wearing a stupid hat and in the center of the booklet they have this really stylized shot where dream is like in this really dramatic victorian room that looks like what i imagine all the rooms in clue to look like, and there are these roses and dark leather and deep crimson furniture and candlesticks and a girl laying on a gold blanket and yet here is dude in a navy pinstripe jacket with brown accents, a navy tie with red and white diagonal stripes and a white shirt with baby blue trim. it's so so so mismatched, and also he's wearing a backwards hat, oh and of course there are five 100 dollar bills scattered there haphazardly near his thigh, because you know, love VERSUS money. it's such an encapsulation in many ways

btw part of me does think that this album is missing a "ditch that"-type banger, but then again I found myself skipping "ditch that" a lot when listening to L/H because it kind of disrupts the flow of the album for me, whereas everything flows well on LvM ("Mr. Yeah" after the epic quadrifecta (lol) is kind of brilliant).
