yeah there really is a lot crammed into these songs, I mean "love vs. money pt.2" is only 4 minutes long but there are entire MOVEMENTS within that one movement. just from a production standpoint the album is incredible, the little sounds in the background and really make the album (that beep or whatever it is in the beginning of "take u home 2 my mama" before the massive synths come in is so WHIMSICAL, it's one of my favorite moments on the album). I think the thing a lot of people connect with in The-Dream's music is that it all sounds like it's overflowing with creative energry, like it's a place where Dream, Tricky & LOS can show off all their cool new tracks that they'll put to use until the NEXT Dream album comes out.

the whole booklet is retarded actually, dream is such a doofus. on top of being an awful dresser he's always wearing a stupid hat and in the center of the booklet they have this really stylized shot where dream is like in this really dramatic victorian room that looks like what i imagine all the rooms in clue to look like, and there are these roses and dark leather and deep crimson furniture and candlesticks and a girl laying on a gold blanket and yet here is dude in a navy pinstripe jacket with brown accents, a navy tie with red and white diagonal stripes and a white shirt with baby blue trim. it's so so so mismatched, and also he's wearing a backwards hat, oh and of course there are five 100 dollar bills scattered there haphazardly near his thigh, because you know, love VERSUS money. it's such an encapsulation in many ways

btw part of me does think that this album is missing a "ditch that"-type banger, but then again I found myself skipping "ditch that" a lot when listening to L/H because it kind of disrupts the flow of the album for me, whereas everything flows well on LvM ("Mr. Yeah" after the epic quadrifecta (lol) is kind of brilliant).

yeah "mr. yeah" is really great, but it's bounciness and pep seems almost farcical coming after the suite

this should say "even though" instead of "but"— it's just such a weird jump emotion from "you love me baby/then unlove me baby" to "rubbin on my ella!". that's rebound sex i guess tho

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 08:08 (fifteen years ago) link

it's good farce though, it seems fully intentional and all that.

i find the complaints about the hype really funny, is he really crossing over in the US? not that he was exactly hidden before. he has ZERO profile here. his record company denies all knowledge of release dates, no editor i've pitched to has even heard of him, he's not even been playlisted on 1xtra (radio stn for "black music"), let alone mainstream radio 1.

Yeah there's so many awesome little bits on this album. My favourites are:

1) in "Rockin' That Shit/Thing" - "said do it to my body don't move..." (micropause) "... BABY!" (timed with crashing beat)

2) The "You you you you" (descending to screwed bassiness) at the beginning of "Love vs Money 2"

Tim F, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 11:14 (fifteen years ago) link

the pause in the radio killer bit on rockin' that shit.

conversely, you'd have expected them to do the same with "all up on you like a monster truck / all up on you like SHAWTY. WHATS. UP." but dream instead doing it in comedy stern thuggin voice like a cross 5-year-old is super cute and 100x better.

oh so like you are aware of this! man then why do you always pull the "england is clueless / this random tune should be number 1" strop, you come off like a right donut. the kanye tune might yet get traction but as of now anyone in england who cares is not gonna be someone who buys cd's anyway. (also buying expensive imports is what the uk-us love affair has always been built on!) same applied with the jeezy album, for instance.

my favorite moment in music this year: everything from "taaake meeeeeee, i'm yooours, shawty" to the end of "Rockin' that Shit." The way the drums drop out and come back. The same for the synths. The placement of the OHHHHHS! The beautiful lyrics. The sweet hooks. A++++

"My Love" sounds like an inferior "We Belong Together."

B-b-but WBT is all weepy and intense where My Love is warm and breezy. I love them both. Her vocals on My Love kill! "Who's in love with yo ass like crazy?" *swoon*

Anyway, LvM is exceeding my expectations. I had a couple very minor reservations at first but they haven't stuck. I can't decide if it surpasses the debut or not.

I keep going back and forth. The fact that its obviously such a completion of the palindrome doesn't really help in preventing these speculations.

i mean srsly
'fancy' could have its own thread
maybe its own board

Haikunym Mark II (Dimension 5ive), Thursday, 12 March 2009 07:34 (fifteen years ago) link

"Americans are not the biggest listeners," he says. "I didn't listen, which is why my granddaddy beat me half the time. It's only when the belt is swinging at you in the same repetitive manner that you actually start to listen. So it's all about creating a belt on the song that repetitiously swings at you. It doesn't mean that in between the belt swinging, I'm not saying stuff that means something."

where is that "best rock quote from a rock star" thread?

as per diddy's twitter (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 March 2009 09:39 (fifteen years ago) link

fancy has the best moment on the album!

"something something about she's tasting wine" ~concertina~

goole, Thursday, 12 March 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago) link

"fancy" really is remarkable - i love the screwed voices come in "all we do is spend this money", "a-t-l-a-n-t-a GA" before the rap. i really love how on the "fancy" and "right side of my brain" he flips his penchant for using screwed up "aaayyys" as party chants and makes them sound like sad, dying dragons

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, "Fancy" is my favorite song.

I'm warming to this album, by the way, for which I love/hate (haha) you guys.

yeah man

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean i picked dragons arbitrarily but i def think in "fancy" and "right side of my brain" esp that he wants the ayys to not only sound sad but to convey this idea of his huge, powerful persona being as hurt as possible - how about a sad, dying (r&b) gorilla

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i feel like there were say "ayyys" on the first album too but i don't remember where

som nambulistino (some dude), Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:10 (fifteen years ago) link

off the top of my head there are ayyys in "shawty is a 10" and "playin in her hair" and neither of those are sad songs, i could be forgetting some

haha i'm in the same boat. i mean i have no idea if this album is really objectively better than the first, i just like it a ton more because there's nothing that annoys me as much as "Nikki" and "Ditch That" and "Falsetto" and "I Luv Your Girl" did.
