The intro will probably be the best track.

The Cashmere Cat credit was not expected.

What a random writing credit from Harry Styles.

What worries me about this album is that Yours Truly was great but it wasn't because of Grande herself, rather the personality that was built around Grande from the throwback vibe and 90s Mariahisms. Her Disney background worked for her because the songs were sweet and retro and cute but she doesn't seem a strong or versatile enough performer to sell something like Problem and you only have to look at her in the video to see how awkward she is with it, and the idea of her doing EDM bangers or whatever doesn't inspire me with great hope for this.
I mean, Problem is a great single but when you've sang on Right There, Baby I, Piano, You'll Never Know and The Way, your world-conquering breakthrough should really be better than a tween-friendly take on The Whisper Song.
― boxedjoy, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 21:32 (ten years ago) link
I'm just sad Babyface won't be on this at all.

i like this... it's kinda EDM gone 80s?
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 July 2014 00:29 (ten years ago) link
:(
the chorus sounds like a prechorus bridge and the production is pretty lifeless... i thought i was fine with her remaining firmly at the center of rhythmic crossover but this is not what i had in mind :/
― dyl, Thursday, 3 July 2014 00:31 (ten years ago) link
sounds like rihanna passed on it

? was thinking how much this doesn't sound like "clarity" and "stay the night"
― een, Thursday, 3 July 2014 03:03 (ten years ago) link
It wouldn't sound completely out of place next to the stuff he did on Artpop.
― Greer, Thursday, 3 July 2014 03:04 (ten years ago) link
actually pity anyone who doesn't fuck with this

idk man this is pretty lifeless
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 July 2014 15:58 (ten years ago) link
for the record i pity me too
j0rdan's really pushing the "ariana's time to take over" narrative huh
this isn't even as good as "problem" on one listen
― lex pretend, Thursday, 3 July 2014 16:11 (ten years ago) link
she's put out two obvious pop smashes i'm not pushing anything
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 July 2014 16:54 (ten years ago) link
yeah this is a dud
chorus is like a dvd commentary set to music

The Carly Rae comparison is interesting because this song is trying really hard to perform cathartic release whereas something like Tonight I'm Getting Over You managed to pull it off seemingly effortlessly.
― Greer, Thursday, 3 July 2014 19:12 (ten years ago) link
"Tonight I'm Getting Over You" to me is more like nu-Ariana in the sense of 'someone fairly unknown came out of nowhere with something great and refreshing, quick, the industry needs to assimilate them with big thudding Max Martin stuff'
― some dude, Thursday, 3 July 2014 19:15 (ten years ago) link

the problem w/ this song isn't zedds, it's that this sounds like a less distinct version of 100 pop singles around it
the topline melody, i mean

except "tonight" was still a great song that featured the actual existence of carly rae
not to sound hyperbolic but the thing about an album like yours truly is that ariana was pretty much always the best thing about each song, great production and all. it was built around her. in these two songs she's totally buried. there's a difference between becoming a pop star and becoming any pop star.
― linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 3 July 2014 23:31 (ten years ago) link
would either of these songs be any worse if rita ora were performing them?
― linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 3 July 2014 23:32 (ten years ago) link
"Problem" is still very much Ariana's song.
― Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Thursday, 3 July 2014 23:37 (ten years ago) link
yeah ariana is totally the star on "problem," i don't get that view at all
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 July 2014 01:39 (ten years ago) link
