john wahey (NickB), Thursday, 3 July 2014 12:55 (nine years ago) link

also it looks like there is some thunderpants.jpg action going on at the back end of that thing

john wahey (NickB), Thursday, 3 July 2014 12:57 (nine years ago) link

I love that; it's a guy who paints monsters into charity shop cheapo paintings. The sort of idea that I guess a lot of ilx0rs would hate, but I think he does it well.

emil.y, Thursday, 3 July 2014 13:01 (nine years ago) link

xp lol yeah thunderpants creating a thermo-nuclear arsequake

Barry Gordy (Neil S), Thursday, 3 July 2014 13:03 (nine years ago) link

okay the context helps to see where they're coming from but it still looks kind of crappy imo

second picture is more interesting, monster vs boats creating some tension there

I like it! A cousin to that one Dinosaur Jr. LP cover with the weed tree monster guy

I really don't like this one, in fact it does a disservice to a fantastic album. Nonetheless, it is "noteworthy."

R.E.M - Unplugged. V. Cold wavey

Was thinking very "Hermit of Mink Hollow" but anyway, would rather look at that cover for forty minutes than listen to the album.

yeah i just feel like i've seen several NDW records with that style going on.

i just read "noteworthy" as "cool" or "supremely wack"

The artwork is by the incredible artist Marijke Koger-Dunham. She painted it sometime in the late 60ies, and because we were looking for some 60ies inspired artwork, we thought “what could be better?” For us, it is a representation of the balance of life, as shown in all the symbolism of natural dualities such as darkness and light, sun and moon, life and death, etc. It shows how opposite forces are interconnected and compliment each other to form a whole. Besides that, it just looks absolutely amazing!

It was brought up in the Rolling Stoner/Psych... thread that some feel these are misogynist or at least boring and cliche. But will humans ever get bored with nudes in art? Perhaps because artists like Baroness' John Baizley and Ufomammut's Malleus Labs have set pretty high standards. I'm conflicted, as it's not necessarily essential that a stoner/psych/doom album cover need be tasteful. Did Satyress singer Jamie LaRose object to the cover? I have no idea. But it would be cool to see some power battle metal covers turn up the homoerotic loincloth images past 11.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 4 July 2014 13:39 (nine years ago) link

I didn't complete the thought -- Baizley/Malleus are good artists, and other covers are more glaringly cheesy in comparison. I still like most of them, but there's definitely a line somewhere where I'd hesitate to wear some on a shirt!

i like the way the shonky-looking hangars behind him undercut the glamour. could've been a swanky departure lounge, could've been palm trees, but no, it's mundane industrial-shed, metal-box ugliness instead

john wahey (NickB), Thursday, 24 July 2014 20:29 (nine years ago) link

I don't know, jumping out of your Benz and hopping into your private jet is pretty glamorous.

il balletto da bronx, yo (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 30 August 2014 03:10 (nine years ago) link

Apparantly it's a double album with 24 songs on it. It's 54 min long all in all.

Frederik B, Saturday, 30 August 2014 03:14 (nine years ago) link

Seriously? Their label's letting them do that?

il balletto da bronx, yo (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 30 August 2014 03:16 (nine years ago) link

It's released on their own label, Wicked Nature Music.

Frederik B, Saturday, 30 August 2014 03:22 (nine years ago) link
