just remembered i once spent twenty four english pounds on hieroglyphics '3rd eye vision' in hmv >_<

the whole booklet is retarded actually, dream is such a doofus. on top of being an awful dresser he's always wearing a stupid hat and in the center of the booklet they have this really stylized shot where dream is like in this really dramatic victorian room that looks like what i imagine all the rooms in clue to look like, and there are these roses and dark leather and deep crimson furniture and candlesticks and a girl laying on a gold blanket and yet here is dude in a navy pinstripe jacket with brown accents, a navy tie with red and white diagonal stripes and a white shirt with baby blue trim. it's so so so mismatched, and also he's wearing a backwards hat, oh and of course there are five 100 dollar bills scattered there haphazardly near his thigh, because you know, love VERSUS money. it's such an encapsulation in many ways

my favorite moment in music this year: everything from "taaake meeeeeee, i'm yooours, shawty" to the end of "Rockin' that Shit." The way the drums drop out and come back. The same for the synths. The placement of the OHHHHHS! The beautiful lyrics. The sweet hooks. A++++

Anyway, LvM is exceeding my expectations. I had a couple very minor reservations at first but they haven't stuck. I can't decide if it surpasses the debut or not.

I keep going back and forth. The fact that its obviously such a completion of the palindrome doesn't really help in preventing these speculations.

"fancy" really is remarkable - i love the screwed voices come in "all we do is spend this money", "a-t-l-a-n-t-a GA" before the rap. i really love how on the "fancy" and "right side of my brain" he flips his penchant for using screwed up "aaayyys" as party chants and makes them sound like sad, dying dragons

i mean i picked dragons arbitrarily but i def think in "fancy" and "right side of my brain" esp that he wants the ayys to not only sound sad but to convey this idea of his huge, powerful persona being as hurt as possible - how about a sad, dying (r&b) gorilla

i feel like there were say "ayyys" on the first album too but i don't remember where

off the top of my head there are ayyys in "shawty is a 10" and "playin in her hair" and neither of those are sad songs, i could be forgetting some

haha i'm in the same boat. i mean i have no idea if this album is really objectively better than the first, i just like it a ton more because there's nothing that annoys me as much as "Nikki" and "Ditch That" and "Falsetto" and "I Luv Your Girl" did.

I think this was discussed upthread before I heard this but the impulse here is definitely to start with Put It Down and listen straight through to the end. Front-loading the singles makes sense from a "marketing" perspective, but for my own purposes I think I'd prefer them tacked on to the end where I'm more likely to let them play once the real meat of the album finishes.

Some more highlights:

LvM Part 2's HUGE chorus.

Waiting until the last possible moment for that ten second burst of drums that closes out Fancy.

Mr. Yeah is so damn happy!

I think the two "Love vs. Money" tracks in the middle of the album are my favorite things he's done, period.

Yeah, I see "Mr. Yeah" as a kind of extension of the stuff that comes right before it. He's saying that he's basically going to be the dependable nice guy that (presumably) took his girl while he was making it rain in the first part! Which we kind of know, um, probably isn't true. The whole sensitive thing is a front -- "can we fuck now?" right into weird atonal whatever the hell that is elastic beat in "Kelly's 12 Play."

Re the melancholy bit of "Mr Yeah", I adore the sad piano that underscores the last few "you can always come around" refrains.
