there are admittedly some really great christine mcvie songs up until tusk

over and over for example

"hold me" is like the best song on mirage

imo with christine there's oddly no middle ground between the transcendent and the clunker.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 21 July 2014 18:25 (nine years ago) link

I'm listening to Behind the Mask right now (why? because I obviously hate myself). If there were more songs like "Save Me" on this album, Lindsey's departure might not have been as big a deal as it was. One of Christine's strongest post-Rumours songs.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 July 2014 18:29 (nine years ago) link

She's so good at verse-chorus-verse with little subtle harmonic curlicues that she's easy to underestimate.

Christine's best album is Tango. She runs away with the thing.

McVie > Buckingham > Nicks

^This. I do think that some of McVie's best songs are on Bare Trees and Future Games but she's still on point all through this era.

cwkiii, Monday, 21 July 2014 18:43 (nine years ago) link

It's more accurate to argue that McVie's Tango songs lent themselves to Buck's ministrations more than Nicks distracted doodles.

Her 1884 solo album has some good stuff too, but xpost "no middle ground between transcendent and clunkers" ain't too far off the mark.

Over My Head is the ultimate FM song and McVie the band's greatest songwriter.

buckingham p easily. after looking up writing credits i might say mcvie slightly over nicks but not sure. all three are obv classic.

Voted for Lindsey, didn't even have to think about it. Christine runner-up. Stevie Nicks, I will never understand the love for her, she is in my top five hated artists ever.

McVie's "As Long as You Follow" is one of the great presumptuous additions to a GH album. "Got a Hold On Me" one of the few solo FM member tracks that sounds like it could be dropped right onto a FM record.

Songbird and Oh Daddy are terrible but I love Say You Love Me, Over My Head, Hold Me, Little Lies and Everyhere more than any five song selection for the other two.

g simmel, Tuesday, 22 July 2014 20:27 (nine years ago) link

It's hard to vote in this because it's an album by album thing for me. For example, Buckingham's tracks stand out for me on Tusk but it's McVie that delivers the highlights on Tango In The Night.

― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn)

I wish! No stories this time, I've never spoken to her, although the people I know who have all say basically the same thing - that she was insufferable then but is lovely and gracious now. I'm pretty sure I'd like her as a person if I sat down and had lunch with her or something.
Nah, I just can't stand her voice. And her songs. I hate her songs. I hate the dopey lyrics. The only thing I like that she ever came up with lyrically was the phrase "Edge of Seventeen" - I thought that was a cool way to describe that line between innocence and adulthood, until I found out that she just misheard Tom Petty's wife, in her heavy Gator Country accent, talking about how she knew him since he was the age of seventeen. And I don't find her melodies to be at all compelling, they're like little snippets of ideas that never seem to go anywhere.
I really hate Stevie Nicks.

yeah but Mick's leadership has never been questioned, and it's more certain now that he's off drugs.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 21:54 (nine years ago) link

Don't Stop is great, even if you hate it. Some things are beyond good and evil.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:05 (nine years ago) link

I dunno. I think Mick abdicated his leadership position, or at least Bucky took over in something akin to a bloodless coup. While Mick is awesome, it's been Bucky since Tusk - his indulgences, his compromises, his cooperation. Bucky was the only one, besides Christine (I think), who did not have a serious substance abuse problem, and I think Mick understands the band hangs on him now. Especially ever since the "Behind the Mask" debacle.

(Is Behind the Mask a debacle? I've never heard it.)

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:12 (nine years ago) link

You can be essential without being a leader.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:15 (nine years ago) link

I dunno if the band has a leader so much as a person shouting loudest at the moment

da croupier, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:15 (nine years ago) link

The McVie songs on BTM, the only ones I've heard, stick to her tried-and-true and don't sound particularly tacky but no special touches either. I do remember "Save Me" getting airplay.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:16 (nine years ago) link

i doubt anyone's said "guys fleetwood mac needs to do something" more than mick, the other 3 show their power by saying they DON'T need to do something.

and then there's john.

da croupier, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:17 (nine years ago) link

and then there's john

...who has a ton to do with what makes them sound so great. i've always heard fm as very much mick and john's band; the name of the band is no accident. without 'em, the others would just be three very good singer-songwriters, all of whom benefited as much if not more from the rhythm section as the rhythm section benefited from them.

PORPOISE AND ME (fact checking cuz), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:29 (nine years ago) link

I've always thought the distance between the B/N album and the s/t/ FM record to be not so great. I love the Mick and John rhythm section, but not least because they adapted so well to Bucky's vision. And probably got even better because of it.

i doubt anyone's said "guys fleetwood mac needs to do something" more than mick

No doubt, says the only member of FM who spent a considerable time bankrupt. Either way, this was a good read: http://www.nytimes.com/1997/11/30/business/talking-money-with-mick-fleetwood-there-s-no-stopping-tomorrow.html
