fancy has the best moment on the album!

"something something about she's tasting wine" ~concertina~

goole, Thursday, 12 March 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago) link

"fancy" really is remarkable - i love the screwed voices come in "all we do is spend this money", "a-t-l-a-n-t-a GA" before the rap. i really love how on the "fancy" and "right side of my brain" he flips his penchant for using screwed up "aaayyys" as party chants and makes them sound like sad, dying dragons

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, "Fancy" is my favorite song.

I'm warming to this album, by the way, for which I love/hate (haha) you guys.

sad dying dragons? ; )

yeah man

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean i picked dragons arbitrarily but i def think in "fancy" and "right side of my brain" esp that he wants the ayys to not only sound sad but to convey this idea of his huge, powerful persona being as hurt as possible - how about a sad, dying (r&b) gorilla

wow heaven is cool (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i feel like there were say "ayyys" on the first album too but i don't remember where

som nambulistino (some dude), Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:10 (fifteen years ago) link

off the top of my head there are ayyys in "shawty is a 10" and "playin in her hair" and neither of those are sad songs, i could be forgetting some

haha i'm in the same boat. i mean i have no idea if this album is really objectively better than the first, i just like it a ton more because there's nothing that annoys me as much as "Nikki" and "Ditch That" and "Falsetto" and "I Luv Your Girl" did.

som nambulistino (some dude), Thursday, 12 March 2009 16:13 (fifteen years ago) link

daer draem,

i knew i was right about u anyway but thnx 4 writing 'hater' all the same, u a sweetie. also it is superb.

"you be my julia i'll be your richard" when the reverse is really the case, ahhhh

sometimes i wonder if i'll ever get round to thinking about why i'm so into decoding stalky songs.

conversely, there's nothing on the new album I enjoy as much as any of those songs

no big leap in any direction, but i'm enjoying this pretty solidly on first listen

da croupier, Thursday, 12 March 2009 21:52 (fifteen years ago) link

i'll definitely take him over ne-yo now

da croupier, Thursday, 12 March 2009 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I think this was discussed upthread before I heard this but the impulse here is definitely to start with Put It Down and listen straight through to the end. Front-loading the singles makes sense from a "marketing" perspective, but for my own purposes I think I'd prefer them tacked on to the end where I'm more likely to let them play once the real meat of the album finishes.

Some more highlights:

"Your body's the cup, my body's the coffee. And I'm brewin' it!"

LvM Part 2's HUGE chorus.

Waiting until the last possible moment for that ten second burst of drums that closes out Fancy.

Mr. Yeah is so damn happy!

lou, Friday, 13 March 2009 01:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Err...it's such a happy song I mean.

And I'm assuming "Walking on the Moon" will be a single at some point.

lou, Friday, 13 March 2009 02:37 (fifteen years ago) link

check the last minute
of "mr. yeah" though, it gets
all melancholy!

Haikunym Mark II (Dimension 5ive), Friday, 13 March 2009 03:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the two "Love vs. Money" tracks in the middle of the album are my favorite things he's done, period.

ilxor, Friday, 13 March 2009 03:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I see "Mr. Yeah" as a kind of extension of the stuff that comes right before it. He's saying that he's basically going to be the dependable nice guy that (presumably) took his girl while he was making it rain in the first part! Which we kind of know, um, probably isn't true. The whole sensitive thing is a front -- "can we fuck now?" right into weird atonal whatever the hell that is elastic beat in "Kelly's 12 Play."

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Friday, 13 March 2009 04:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Re the melancholy bit of "Mr Yeah", I adore the sad piano that underscores the last few "you can always come around" refrains.

Tim F, Friday, 13 March 2009 05:34 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it undercuts
the rest of the song to bits
"it was all a-dream"

omg fancy slayed me on the bus last night. the way it pickes up and then THOSE DRUMS. it's a remarkable payoff and it's completely earned too

151,000

i wish def jam would give him the budget to put on a 'glow in the dark' style tour w/ a live orchestra and shit. i would go to like 5 shows

its great how in "fancy" he gets taunted by these chants that are like hooks from slim thug songs— "all all we do is, we spend this money"

#2. not bad the-dream!

Ah, actually buying this at Target so I could listen to it on the way home/scan the picture MADE A DIFFERENCE! (In the digital age, my new music purchases are basically limited to CD-Baby-level obscurity and stuff I can buy on the way to the checkout line at the supermarket.)

dabug, Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago) link

PS $9.98, check yr local stores.

dabug, Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:08 (fifteen years ago) link

I love the fact that you bought this at least 50% so you could Scan the Picture.

The Reverend, Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, I'd only call it 30%.

dabug, Friday, 20 March 2009 01:52 (fifteen years ago) link

i bought the Kelly and downloaded the The-Dream. i made a difference the other way!

hahaha sorry all you music-hippies (some dude), Friday, 20 March 2009 02:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I downloaded the The-Dream and didn't bother with the Kelly. I made no difference whatsoever!
