I like Matt, who wrote that, but I'm not sure I really 'get' that piece & the connections its trying to make. Or the strawman of white academic criticism that it's apparently an anecdote to? whenever i read academic criticism of rap it tends to be from people of color, because academia is one place where people of color have managed to make more significant inroads of influence
i also have issues w/ Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah's pieces but that's neither here nor there

i like the point about 'good'. i think that's very good. something to do something with.

I've been listening a lot to Acid Rap again recently, and I still can't quite believe how good it is. This album always feel exciting.

― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 July 2015 13:34 (nine years ago) link
Surf is kind of annoying.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 02:02 (nine years ago) link
kind of equal parts enjoyable and annoying I would say? Often simultaneously?
― Tim F, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 02:12 (nine years ago) link
i think the only part that annoys me is the KYLE verse
― some dude, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 02:43 (nine years ago) link
Yes this is true.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 03:52 (nine years ago) link
obviously a let down after acid rap, still waiting for the proper sequel. it's not all bad, sunday candy is still my track of the year.
― Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 04:00 (nine years ago) link
if they didn't do enough for you to drop any expectations of this as "the follow-up to Acid Rap" then i think that's your issue
― some dude, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 05:11 (nine years ago) link
literally every piece about this album was like, 'this is not a follow up to acid rap' in the lede
kyle is def the album's worst part imo
― supreme problematics (D-40), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 06:37 (nine years ago) link

i thought it was chance rapping in character for a while
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 8 July 2015 14:32 (nine years ago) link
it's also just kinda frustrating that Chance did a hook for the song that really feels like a very personal mission statement coming from him, and then he lets other people do the verses.
― some dude, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 14:39 (nine years ago) link
Chance always making himself adjacent to people who are ostensibly similar but not quite (Vic Mensa, Gambino, Kyle) really just serves to help me see what he gets right that other rappers in his lane get wrong.
― some dude, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 14:40 (nine years ago) link
Equal parts fun and annoying is my response too. I liked it for a couple days before filing it.

― gr8080, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 14:47 (nine years ago) link
More frustrating than annoying? The way tracks stop just when they're getting going. Can see myself growing to love it tho.
― Jeff W, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:24 (nine years ago) link
this is more of a side project really right?
― 龜, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:25 (nine years ago) link

yeah i didn't follow all the campaign around it, it's my issue and i'm assuming it.
― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 9 July 2015 00:02 (nine years ago) link
Even before I saw the vid for Sunday Candy, this felt like what would happen if Michel Gondry made a rap album.
Don't understand why they chose to make you slog all the way through this quite hazy, insubstantial sprawl before you get to Sunday Candy, which is great and catchy and infuriating all at the same time.
