schultz co-produced it, it stil sucks

it's a good song with some cool moments that a lot of people like, it's okay if it's a tad generic

the guy's first ever single was a blatant rip off of the-dream, it's not like he's some historically original voice who must not be tampered down at any costs

i think if Jeremih only had the Shlohmo EP out right now, or only had a standard issue Mustard radio song out right now, i might be tut tutting right along with you guys about the direction he's heading in. but instead he's got them both out, plus another EP, plus a release date for the album, and all of it's pretty dope to me and i'm happy to see dude winning.

Yeah, I don't want to overstate my aversion to the single. It's not a travesty or anything. It's just a bit of a bummer that the guy is on a hot streak and this is the single we got. I really don't think it does justice to how spirited or inventive his recent output has been.

It's probably a 50th percentile DJ Mustard single; I'd be excited about it if it were a 70th or 80th percentile one

i think it's pretty good. only part that annoys me is "girl you know I'm from Chicago/ I act a fool, Bobby Brown wit it" because he delivers it like a punchline but Bobby's not from Chicago, it's just a string of unrelated lines.

the one drawback of the song to me is that the "don't tell em" part of the chorus is kind of drab, which is a shame cuz the pre-chorus "oooh why why why why" is really great imo. but even the "don't tell em" part is ushered in by this little roll of hi hats and a satisfying lil bass drop so i still fuck w/ it.

i was higher on 'late nights' than most people on this board iirc but 2013 was a lost year for him imo and we were almost halfway thru 2014 w/ stagnant buzz before this single dropped so i don't really agree w/ this statement

yeah. even if i didn't like the single, the Shlohmo EP had been delayed for like 6 months, and the album (which thank god is no longer called THUMPY JOHNSON) had been delayed for like 18 months. now we're getting 3 projects in the space of a couple months and a whole shitload of songs that sound nothing like "Don't Tell Em."

i don't recall having heard a jeremih song since "birthday sex" but "don't tell em" sounds p good to me.

"don't tell 'em" is a fucking smash, it's one of the biggest songs on pop radio rn and still increasing. also it's gonna chart high in the uk. how does jeremih manage to do this every few years

Just checked with his publicist; she says the release date is TBA next week ("hopefully"). Says the album is in and everything. Would be interesting to hear the logic behind the marketing of this thing tho

i think the idea of them doing nothing to distract from "don't tell em" and then being like "bam here's the album" is interesting (if it works)

Yeah it would be a cool experiment. Nothing they could do would make the song a bigger hit than it is now so why bother, I guess. They can promote the shit oh of some future single.

I don't watch or really like music videos so I don't mind that this song doesn't have one. (It's almost kind of refreshing coming on the heels of 2014, which saw critics write almost as much about videos as they did songs)

kind of refreshing to see that a song can smash without a video too, a video dropping seems to have so much more impact than the music dropping (cf "2 on" - that song had been around for MONTHS earlier this year, to little reaction, and then the video dropped and boom, everywhere)

pity it's not a better song but oh well

i've come around on this song a bit but i'm still hoping the album is full of old-school jeremih joints

'dont tell em' isn't bad exactly but it's kinda lame in the same way i feel about 'we dem boyz'

I know "Show Me" came first and you love it but imo "Don't Tell 'Em" has a better singer, a better rapper, a better hook, even a better interpolation

also way better, more propulsive beat

other than better rapper i dont really agree about any of those things! and 'dont tell em' feels like such a cheap conceptual bite, too

the house reference feels so much more forced ... like the 'show me' ref was about the beat too

"show me" is better but i always thought "don't tell em" was being underrated -- i think jeremih shines thru that song anyway once you can divorce it from "show me"/mustardwave in general

i've come around to "don't tell 'em" and rather like it now. maybe i'm just pleased to see that a song in 2014 has finally legitimately crossed over from being a big hit on hip-hop radio to becoming the same on pop.

"Don't Tell Em" is tied w/ "Rack City" for highest charting Mustard song, history will forget "Show Me," y'all lost

also i was never really bothered by "don't tell em"'s similarity to "show me" bcuz jeremih was originally supposed to have "show me" so i can't fault dude for trying to get his slice

but ppl like kev or whoever lamenting that "don't tell em" isn't jeremih enough shows the blind spots of auteur fetishization imo

Jeremih's voice is more valuable than his aesthetic -- he has deep cuts with a distinctive sensibility but when he makes a hit it's just a cool hit song with Jeremih's cool voice on it and the shape it takes doesn't really matter

imo denigrating "auteur fetishists" can be useful in a rockist context when people are putting britney spears down or whoever and there are some problematic racial/sexist implications, but me pining for the jeremih of old is hardly the same thing

i mean i just thought it was a lame song and preferred the kind of career jeremih used to have and his old style. i understand him having to hop on trends tho (and obv his career was built on biting dudes like the-dream anyway, so..)

but anyway i've come around on the song a bit, i think it's a respectable 6/10 joint, but it's obviously more of a mustard (who i'm ambivalent about) vehicle than a jeremih one. there's not a lot of technical or emotional range; it's a limited song

yeah it's fine but what stops me getting excited isn't so much where it fits into jeremih's career as where it fits into mustard's; it's a mustard vehicle that isn't even in the top tier of mustard 2014 singles
