yeah i'm surprised by the extent to which "don't tell 'em" is already crossing over to pop considering pop radio hasn't enthusiastically picked up any other mustardwave other than "fancy." i guess jeremih's previous track record in crossing over helps.

"2 on" is great but uhhh let's hope the year ends up being somewhat better than one in which we can legitimately expect it to top our poll lol

"show me" got pop radio play

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 August 2014 15:46 (nine years ago) link

not a huge amount but there was some crossover there

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 August 2014 15:46 (nine years ago) link

For the last couple of months my rap station has played "2 On" followed by brief voiceover from Tinashe introducing herself, saying that this her new song, and that it's sponsored by RCA records. Does that happen on any other stations? I can't figure out the business arrangement behind the plug, especially since the song is a hit, so it's not like it needs to be a sponsored in order to get airplay

Evan R, Thursday, 14 August 2014 18:51 (nine years ago) link

Worthing pointing out how '2 On' ticks a lot of ILXOR boxes for TOY tho.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 14 August 2014 19:16 (nine years ago) link

cassie fan club only has relatively limited influence thankfully

r|t|c, Thursday, 14 August 2014 19:19 (nine years ago) link

Notable contingent, a classic.

yeah i've heard rita ora "i will never let you down" on radio that way also the mila j song

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 August 2014 20:05 (nine years ago) link

yeah i've heard that here and there -- 50 Cent bought a lot of ad time to play his single with Trey Songz lol -- but yeah that is weird when it's a song that would likely be in rotation anyway.

some dude, Thursday, 14 August 2014 20:07 (nine years ago) link

Left right got straight up robbed blind.

it's iheartradio's (clear channel's) on the verge program -- basically some execs choose a song/artist to be featured, and then all clear channel stations of the corresponding format have to play it at least 150 times, paid for by the record label. there's an article talking about it here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/style-blog/wp/2014/07/15/clear-channels-on-the-verge-program-helped-make-iggy-azalea-a-star-heres-how-it-works/

dyl, Friday, 15 August 2014 05:34 (nine years ago) link

Don't care for these results but then I only like "2on" in spite of itself

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 15 August 2014 15:02 (nine years ago) link

Oh wow, thanks dyl. I had no idea that existed

Evan R, Friday, 15 August 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

I already got a strong return of g-funk vibe from mustard but wow his album really makes it explicit.

Tim F, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 21:19 (nine years ago) link

am i crazy or is there acoustic guitar on "don't panic" very very deep in the mix

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 August 2014 16:26 (nine years ago) link

also i looooove "go deep" off 10 summers

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 August 2014 16:27 (nine years ago) link

i would too but for the contributors

super stuck on '4 digits' and 'down on me' tho

r|t|c, Thursday, 28 August 2014 16:49 (nine years ago) link

4 Digits is great, matter of time before somebody made a rap about the iPhone passcode. Makes a weird sort of sense that it was Fabolous.

curmudgeon, Friday, 29 August 2014 13:56 (nine years ago) link

ha, is this one of those albums where everyone disagrees on the highlights? i love "can't tell me shit" and "no reason", the r&b ones towards the end really bore me

"face down" is so good when boosie is on the mic - he's hands down the most charismatic vocalist here - and so bad when he's not :/

no idea why everyone's going nuts over the tinashe interlude either

lex pretend, Friday, 29 August 2014 14:09 (nine years ago) link

posting inside the club where the dj blended "fu-gee-la" into "na na" just need this on the record :-/

le goon (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 30 August 2014 07:04 (nine years ago) link

Surely we all agree that no one flounders over these beats more than Ross and Wiz Khalifa, right?

I actually stop listening after the Tinashe interlude. Good album but most of the MCs here feel like they're mainly there to showcase the beats, which I suppose is the way it should be on an album like this, but I only really feel the electricity when YG turns up.

I'm struggling to work out why he isn't better at melodic R&B when you consider how many of his hooks are lifted from house music.

would strongly suggest brits to listen to westwood these days for the most realistic and unadulterated appreciation of mustardwave available outside its natural habitat (ie he just sits there and zips through the lot of it, which doesnt seem like a big deal but it really does give u a much better feel for it as club radio music than you'd get otherwise)

r|t|c, Saturday, 30 August 2014 12:16 (nine years ago) link

can also recommend trying to tune in. ol' guy seems to be relatively on the pulse these days. parting with the bbc worked out quite well for him

what j0rd says there about mustard being a uniter moreso than just a hot producer, giving rap/r&b a club centre again feels really otm

like for the last few years it seems to me lil ephemeral bass jams in the vein of idk 'who booty' or w/e have had no place to go and it's so much healthier now that they do

r|t|c, Saturday, 30 August 2014 12:31 (nine years ago) link

xp yeah it's quite a sweet show now! no station alignment anxiety just an old g in his room left alone to play his records and stay enthusiastic 4ever

thanks & yeah something like "up!" had to have that remix with 50 cent to crossover into non-west coast radio literally like a year after it was hitting in the bay. then you look at sage having two songs go top 40 or whatever, something definitely shifted.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 30 August 2014 15:03 (nine years ago) link

the 50 cent verse seemed kind of incidental to that song's success, especially considering that it's one of only like two hits 50 cent has been on in the last five years

some dude, Saturday, 30 August 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

Mustard definitely needed non-west coast rappers on his beats (2 Chainz, Jeezy, etc.) to get to where he is while the west was still gaining steam though, yeah.

some dude, Saturday, 30 August 2014 15:10 (nine years ago) link

Well at any rate it speaks to vanishing label insecurity about the sound

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 30 August 2014 15:12 (nine years ago) link

i don't think the sound itself was a liability. even as homogenized as rap radio gets, there's always room for outliers and beats by unknown producers. when "Rack City" came out there wasn't much like it on the radio but it still sounded like a hit and didn't get any resistance for standing out.

some dude, Saturday, 30 August 2014 15:20 (nine years ago) link

what are y'all talking about this style of beats not being popular at first, "Function" was huge

actually i live on the West Coast tho, may've had a little to do with it

nova, Saturday, 30 August 2014 15:23 (nine years ago) link

i feel like this tape is more like a 6.x than 7.x but the highlights are great.

what are y'all talking about this style of beats not being popular at first, "Function" was huge

--nova

this is the entire point! "function" was not getting east coast radio spins

le goon (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 30 August 2014 20:39 (nine years ago) link

yeah the "may've had a little to do with it" was joking/purposeful understatement, my bad i know doesn't always translate well online. I actually did wonder if I was exclusively a California thing tho, like if it got a certain amount of spins elsewhere. Feel like a similar thing may be happening with Iamsu "Only That Real" right now but not sure.

much as i dislike Mustard/fun I do like "Function" and "Like Whaaat" a bunch tho so there's def. a way to do that general style that i'm into. also for some reason the way they censor the cuss words on the radio versions of both sounds really cool on those kinds of beats

nova, Saturday, 30 August 2014 21:02 (nine years ago) link

Mustard definitely needed non-west coast rappers on his beats (2 Chainz, Jeezy, etc.) to get to where he is while the west was still gaining steam though, yeah.
--some dude

the flip of this tho is that it's not like jeezy was a radio presence by the time of "RIP" (let alone "my nigga") and 2 chainz's only sizable solo hit was a drake hook. so you could argue that he did as much for them tho it really did feel like a true tandem sorta thing

le goon (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 30 August 2014 21:35 (nine years ago) link

the west has def struggled for some good star rappers of late, outside of kendrick

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 30 August 2014 22:34 (nine years ago) link

"Function" got some radio play in Seattle but it felt like more of a club hit than a airplay hit.

The Reverend, Saturday, 30 August 2014 22:40 (nine years ago) link

function has 3.6 mill spotify plays (more than twice the plays of e-40's next most popular song on the service) and 12 million youtube plays spread out over three "official" videos for original and remix

the other song about butts in the top 5 (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 30 August 2014 23:47 (nine years ago) link

i think it's prob e-40's biggest hit since tell me when 2 go / u and dat in '06

the other song about butts in the top 5 (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 30 August 2014 23:49 (nine years ago) link

oh it absolutely is, but it's not like it has any viable competition

some dude, Sunday, 31 August 2014 01:22 (nine years ago) link

I woulda thought the one with chris brown and ti would have done the trick, tho not so much to my taste

the other song about butts in the top 5 (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 31 August 2014 05:17 (nine years ago) link

Who knew the least-talented up-and-comer on "Function" would have the biggest career two years later

ok Problem I don't really know I just love his second verse on "Like Whaaat"

nova, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 00:26 (nine years ago) link

the crazy thing about "Function" is that it had 3 guys on it that i was (and probably most non-west coast people were) only hearing for the first or second time on that song and they've all thrived since then

some dude, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 00:31 (nine years ago) link

feels so weird the first place I heard problem was on Blaqkout

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 06:18 (nine years ago) link

ohhh yeah damn

some dude, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 11:24 (nine years ago) link

"24 hours" hit the hot 100 this week

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 September 2014 17:03 (nine years ago) link

that is one slow climb

rap steve gadd (D-40), Thursday, 4 September 2014 17:23 (nine years ago) link
