Some people (Christgau, e.g.) hate this one. I kinda love it. I think this and "Danny Says" are the two times on the album that the Spectorisms really pay off.

I loved this when the album came out, but it hasn't worn so well. Nice roll-call, though.

I like the throw-in of "romeo" in "Basement"

Nice roll-call, though.

They didn't start the fire.

cept even in 1980 i think most of their audience was too young to have seen Shindig and Hullabaloo. (i was)

Get the glory, like Charles Manson.

I think I got most of the references at the time, but not sure if I'd bought Nuggets yet--Moulty may have puzzled me.

clemenza, Thursday, 28 August 2014 15:53 (nine years ago) link

"Glad to See You Go" on my playlist for 1/20/17

I was going to post that too!

The pick-up band I had at school played "Blitzkrieg Bop" one year, "Now I Wanna Be a Good Boy" the next. I tried to learn "Loudmouth" and didn't quite get it. Maybe there's a tricky change in there.

clemenza, Thursday, 28 August 2014 16:27 (nine years ago) link

doesn't "Loudmouth" have the most impressive cold stop?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 August 2014 16:30 (nine years ago) link

Just gave it a quick listen--I think it was the last 30 seconds that tripped me up trying to learn it. No cold stop; fade-out, like Gentle Giant.

clemenza, Thursday, 28 August 2014 16:34 (nine years ago) link

ok what am i thinking of, then

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 August 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

For most of my life, I thought the Manson line in "Glad to See You Go" was "Kick the door/Light the match/You gotta go go go go..."

how's life, Thursday, 28 August 2014 16:42 (nine years ago) link

I'm guessing most of the songs on the first four LPs end cold? That's the way I intuitively think of them, but then I wouldn't have guessed a fade-out on "Loudmouth," either, so I don't know.

clemenza, Thursday, 28 August 2014 16:42 (nine years ago) link

That's one hell of an art collection,by the way.

Mark G, Thursday, 28 August 2014 16:44 (nine years ago) link

"Robot Frog" is more of a Robyn Hitchcock title tho

All credit to the artists.

I didn't even hear of it til years after I heard the song. It was almost disappointing to learn there was some context for Gabba Gabba beyond just Ramones weirdness.

His little laugh at the end there reminds me of Michael Showalter's character in WHAS.
