"Wart Hog" was my #7 vote. Thought it might slip in at the bottom. Not confident about its chances anymore.

Ah, there's something from Animal Boy - finally! Was expecting this one, of course, but still great. God, I was so shocked when I heard the bells in this, but it struck me immediately and was my first favorite song off of my first Ramones album. Joey sounds so sad.

The live version of Bonzo is epic. My favorite Joey vocal.

Which live version?

JRN, Friday, 29 August 2014 03:57 (nine years ago) link

like many of you (I assume), I have the 12"

was it Johnny or the suits who got the title slightly amended for the LP?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 August 2014 11:42 (nine years ago) link

Johnny, by all accounts.

I bet the suits had some hand in it. Sire Records said the reason they didn't release the single stateside was both "financial and political".

Funny, I just watched this interview last night where both Dee Dee and Joey sorta halfassedly defend Reagan to a British interviewer (around the 4 minute mark). It really feels like they are dealing with the fallout from a battle they had lost against Johnny/Sire/whoever.

Says a lot about the difference between US and UK punk that it took the Ramones 10 years to record their "God Save the Queen."

Ford, Carter just too middle-of-the-road for outright punk rock rebellion, I guess.

I really don't know anything about those guys though. Correct me if I'm wrong.

They could've written "Pardon Me, Jerry."

My understanding is that the only lefty among the (first five) Ramones was Marky

I figured we wouldn't split votes acc to the two versions, so I didn't specify. (I assume Spector re-recorded them rather than remixed it?)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 August 2014 15:14 (nine years ago) link

I think so, because wasn't this one of the ones where he made Johnny play his part like 100 times?

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 29 August 2014 15:18 (nine years ago) link

Didn't make my ballot (Rockaway Beach ousted it from my corny 60s throwback tunes slot). Dee Dee is fucking hilarious in this video.

Didn't make my ballot, but this is obviously such a great song. Could totally hear it with an "Everyday"-style arrangement with glockenspeil or something.

So important to the first album, too -- signaled their pop chops from the get-go.

I think Joey was a liberal type of dude. Whether he counted as a "lefty" is I suppose a matter of interpretation.

JRN, Friday, 29 August 2014 17:38 (nine years ago) link

Seems like Joey was liberal in inclination but not really very political until "Bonzo" and "Sun City."

I think Wanna Be Your Boyfriend is the one with seven (!!) chords in it

somewhere there is an ILM thread where people discuss the number of chords per song on the debut

sleeve, Friday, 29 August 2014 17:42 (nine years ago) link

"53rd & 3rd" such a weird, complicated song. "You're the one they never pick" vs. "Then I took out my razor blade."

I saw an interview clip with Dee Dee from the early 2000s where he is obviously really tired of answering questions about the song.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 29 August 2014 17:43 (nine years ago) link

"53rd & 3rd" the closest they ever got, sound-wise, to their queens borough-mates kiss.

can't find any web sources, but am quite sure Joey said in contemporaneous interviews that he'd voted for Reagan in 1980. so he may have been liberal just when it came to apartheid, pot, and Nazis.

Gonna do this one, then I'll be back this evening with the big 3. (Which of course everyone knows, but in what order?)

Two I know--and I'd bet money on the #1--but I'm blanking out on the third. My #1 hasn't been listed yet, so I guess it could be that, but I always thought it was more of a subjective favourite. (I'll keep everything nice and vague.)

blitzkrieg, sheena and sedated obviously. no Swallow My Pride after all.

"I Wanna Be Sedated" has already shown up. First two, of course--it's the third one I'm not sure about.
