Dark Magus again

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 09:23 (sixteen years ago) link

That's your vote or what will get the lurker vote?

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:12 (sixteen years ago) link

you know, i've never heard the Blackhawk stuff -- which is odd, since I really love Wynton Kelly. Anybody vote for that? (Looks like you can get the box set pretty cheap these days ... perhaps I shall order it.)

tylerw, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 15:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Not heard it either

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 18:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Blackhawk is some good stuff (and yes, easy to find cheap). There are some fleeting moments where you almost forget that it's the '61 band and not the '65 band. But Hank Mobley just never did it for me.

So my vote's going to Plugged Nickel. I can't think of anything -- even in his electric era -- that's as dynamic and tense and constantly threatening to go off the rails.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha. One vote for At Carnegie Hall. Mine!~

sam500, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Joint winner then. Thought Pangaea might be the one pushing it for votes.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 07:18 (sixteen years ago) link

A couple of votes for 80s stuff too I see.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Justice is served.

I wonder if Dark Magus had been titled Live In New York if it would have gotten a third of the love it gets or, say, half the votes it gets here.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Why do you say that?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 17:36 (sixteen years ago) link

That makes very little sense. I voted for Magus and my three favorite live albums are titled Europe '72, Live at Leeds and Made in Japan. Real creative stuff. Remove your head from your ass.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 17:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Live at the Apollo (Parts 1,2 & 3) to thread!

Ioannis, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

four weeks pass...

lol, i was just cranking Dark Magus and had the kettle on -- thought at first that the piercing whistle was one of Miles' one-note organ solos. heh.

I missed this thread. Dark Magus bugs me. I want to hear the Montreaux thing. I would have voted Live Evil. In Concert: Live at Philharmonic has a deservedly spotty reputation, but I like it.

Trip Maker, Friday, 18 January 2008 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i dunno, i think that Dark Magus band is pretty ferocious -- is that all the same players as Agharta/Pangaea? The Philharmonic set isn't terrible, but it does sound a lot more hesitant, like no one is quite sure what they should be doing. I like it, though, just not as much as other electric Miles live discs.

tylerw, Friday, 18 January 2008 17:56 (sixteen years ago) link

* Dark Magus (1974) 10
* Agharta (1975) 10

that's about right

three years pass...

Kind of shocked I never knew that Sam Rivers did a stint in the band replacing George Coleman, let alone that there was actually a record of it (Live in Tokyo).

hey boys, suppers on me, our video just went bacterial (Hurting 2), Saturday, 29 January 2011 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Speaking of Sam Rivers in the band, there is a forthcoming release double cd release of the other two concerts he did in Japan: http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread.php?t=47769

Jim, Saturday, 5 February 2011 01:21 (thirteen years ago) link

that miles - live in tokyo is v nice! Sam Rivers is kinda underrated, i think.
and i agree w/Edward III 3 posts up but nitpick DM as a 9 (or A not A+), and prefer Agharta slightly.
electric Miles personal pref. in order (not counting in a silent way, 'cuz it's so unique, musically speaking:
Agharta
Jack Johnson
Dark Magus
Live/Evil

if anyone wants to go nuts w/ live miles, this site has some big surveys of various tours: http://killedincars.com/post/973480743/1975tree#

tylerw, Saturday, 5 February 2011 02:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks for the link! The 1975 Tree disks are amazingly excellent.

twelve years pass...

In the past I passed over My Funny Valentine, because all the fast tunes from the concert are on Four + More, and ballads are boring, right? Turns out it's incredibly lovely.

It is and i'm firmly in the ballads are boring camp

I had the Seven Steps box set that puts the concert back into its original running order and have never checked out the two albums the way they were originally issued. I should do that.

man We Want Miles was robbed here

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:44 (ten months ago) link

The original albums are so cohesive that it's almost hard to imagine going back and forth between the ballads and hyperjazz tunes. I'd like to hear the original concert order though.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 18:46 (ten months ago) link

lol:

On the Seven Steps box they place all the tracks in the order they were recorded on the night, including the spoken introductions to both sets.

I kind of like it because then I can easily skip the ballads. :)

Like Bitches Brew, Live-Evil had a Quadraphonic release with a very different mix. It’s excellent

In Concert (1972) is ridiculously underrated, but it desperately needs a remix/remaster

beamish13, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 19:20 (ten months ago) link

I think in concert sounds that way because of how it was recorded.. maybe some AI thing can recreate the full frequency spectrum
