funkadelic :
later stuff generally lower reaches
mid period in the middle
early stuff at the top

My guess is top 2 are a battle between flashlight and maggot brain with cosmic slop being the dark horse.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 19:36 (nine years ago) link

parliament its the mid period that will dominate

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 19:36 (nine years ago) link

I had Better By The Pound way up high on my ballot. I absolutely love that song.

expected that to be higher but looks like not enough consider it pfunk.
xp

zapp i mean

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:03 (nine years ago) link

I can see taking issue with Zapp's broader catalog but that song in particular is a) unbelievably super-classic and b) has George and Bootsy's hands all over it as much as any other P-Funk side project

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:04 (nine years ago) link

it counts for me. the album was meant to come out on uncle jam til roger screwed em over

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

Bootsy and Greg Jackson are both on it, the loop/edit was George, produced by Bootsy/George = yeah wtf people

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:11 (nine years ago) link

gah sorry mixing up Greg Jackson with Bootsy's keyboardist Joel Johnson

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:12 (nine years ago) link

i know that some of these polls have participants who know nothing about the band but join in to learn (but not this time?) if they had done I wonder if they wouldve have voted the zapp higher?

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:21 (nine years ago) link

Hi, part of the problem here. I merely know 8 albums well, all under the name of Parliament or Funkadelic.

Except for Miles Davis or some other jazz or classical legend, I can't imagine starting a sentence with "I merely know 8 albums by...."

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:25 (nine years ago) link

...but it's fun to learn new things, and two new things I've learned today are "Electro-Cuties" and "Smokey."

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:27 (nine years ago) link

Anyway, so long as we don't have the P-Funk equivalent of "Deacon Blues" or "Debaser" winning it's all good right? (ducks to avoid flying objects)

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

What is P-Funk's "Sway"?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:30 (nine years ago) link

A "Sway" hasn't won a poll since "Sway".

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:33 (nine years ago) link

P-Funk's "Sway" is "Can You Get to That"

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:44 (nine years ago) link

works for me

sleeve, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:45 (nine years ago) link

what is sway? the stones? in which case im fine with that too. If its ocean colour scene fuck off ;)

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link

not even! Greg Tate compared that one to the 5th Dimension (meaning it as a compliment, I think).

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link

i didnt follow the other polls. think i voted in manics miles and zep then wasnt on ilm much this year

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link

Plus it was sampled in that goddam what'stheir face song a few years ago, pearly boots or something? no sway

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:49 (nine years ago) link

slim sneakers? what was that group? 'have a heart, have a heart'

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:49 (nine years ago) link

I literally have no idea what you're talking about

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:50 (nine years ago) link

I think I know what you're talking about...it was a very prominent sample pretty recently. No idea who the artist was, though.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:54 (nine years ago) link

sorry, using internet properly now: indie college rock radio hit by Sleigh Bells, "Rill Rill" 2010, built around acoustic guitar bit from 'can you get to that'

(the reason I thought shoes were in their name was because of that album cover with the blood on the sneakers)

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:55 (nine years ago) link

i almost wrote lollage cock, what a disaster that would have been

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

finding a P-Funk song that's never been sampled is gonna be kinda difficult tbh

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

Oh wait, it was used in an ad not too long ago, wasn't it? Really pissed me off, since it would've been a nice payday for George, but he's still getting screwed out of royalties from the Westbound stuff.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

Let's look on the bright side though, at least whatever bastards own the rights to the Westbound material got paid!

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:58 (nine years ago) link

you should read George's book

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

finding a P-Funk song that's been sampled in an indie rock staple or a tv commercial though

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

yeah the stuff at the end of George's autobio where he has a deposition from Boladian's assistant testifying that Boladian cut+pasted/forged his signature on documents is just nuts. George disavows any involvement in all the lawsuits that have been pursued over the years on behalf of Bridgeport Music.

xp

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

Eh, I didn't know about George's contributions to "More Bounce." I always assumed that his quotes of the song on "Loopzilla" were just creative revenge for Roger Troutman bailing on the Uncle Jam Records deal - the last brick that toppled the whole P-Funk empire in 1981. My bad, shoulda voted for it.

Chuck Eddy. He's a people. (thewufs), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:02 (nine years ago) link

I've come around to the idea that nobody ever got paid for anything unless they had somebody kidnapped or killed.

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:02 (nine years ago) link

I always assumed that his quotes of the song on "Loopzilla" were just creative revenge for Roger Troutman bailing on the Uncle Jam Records deal

tbf this is entirely possible

anyway back to the countdown

xps (Comin Round The Mountain)

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:05 (nine years ago) link

funk gets stronger is awesome too. fabulous album and a great way for funkadelic to go out. the closest they got to their earlier stuff. Sadly Parliament didn't end as strongly.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link

there's stuff I like on Trombipulation but yeah it's a weird album, the ideas don't coalesce. too much coke goin' around I assume, everybody distracted doing a million things

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:08 (nine years ago) link

i dont care for Gloryhallastoopid tbh but its still better than Trombipulation. dont even own them.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:10 (nine years ago) link

I prefer Gloryhallastoopid, can't even remember what's on Trombipulation.

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:11 (nine years ago) link

eh as an obsessive completist of course I have both. Oddly, "Trombipulation" is the only Parliament album with other producer credits besides George.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link

... oh yeah, Agony of Defeet, with the annoying lead vocal
