Let's look on the bright side though, at least whatever bastards own the rights to the Westbound material got paid!

you should read George's book

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

finding a P-Funk song that's been sampled in an indie rock staple or a tv commercial though

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

yeah the stuff at the end of George's autobio where he has a deposition from Boladian's assistant testifying that Boladian cut+pasted/forged his signature on documents is just nuts. George disavows any involvement in all the lawsuits that have been pursued over the years on behalf of Bridgeport Music.

Eh, I didn't know about George's contributions to "More Bounce." I always assumed that his quotes of the song on "Loopzilla" were just creative revenge for Roger Troutman bailing on the Uncle Jam Records deal - the last brick that toppled the whole P-Funk empire in 1981. My bad, shoulda voted for it.

I've come around to the idea that nobody ever got paid for anything unless they had somebody kidnapped or killed.

tbf this is entirely possible

ahh nice one. Was worried that might be an overlooked period but that tracks a banger
xps (Comin Round The Mountain)

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:05 (nine years ago) link

funk gets stronger is awesome too. fabulous album and a great way for funkadelic to go out. the closest they got to their earlier stuff. Sadly Parliament didn't end as strongly.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link

there's stuff I like on Trombipulation but yeah it's a weird album, the ideas don't coalesce. too much coke goin' around I assume, everybody distracted doing a million things

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:08 (nine years ago) link

i dont care for Gloryhallastoopid tbh but its still better than Trombipulation. dont even own them.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:10 (nine years ago) link

I prefer Gloryhallastoopid, can't even remember what's on Trombipulation.

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:11 (nine years ago) link

eh as an obsessive completist of course I have both. Oddly, "Trombipulation" is the only Parliament album with other producer credits besides George.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link

... oh yeah, Agony of Defeet, with the annoying lead vocal

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link

but 7 great albums and 2 stinkers is a damn good ratio.
Funkadelic didnt have any stinkers. even hardcore jollies and tales of kidd funkadelic have great stuff on it they just pale a bit to the before and after genius.
Add in some amazing spin off albums and i CANT BELIEVE MORE PEOPLE DIDNT TRY TO GET INTO FUNKADELIC AND VOTE!

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link

tho the official live album (which i do like) isnt exactly loved by people

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:13 (nine years ago) link

would kill for soundboard recordings from the very early era

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:14 (nine years ago) link

we live in unfunky times

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:14 (nine years ago) link

Can't agree about Gloryhallastoopid being a stinker when it has the title track, Theme From the Black Hole and Big Bang Theory on it!

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:15 (nine years ago) link

Gloryhallastoopid's comic book is great. Trombipulation's weird mishmash of ancient egyptian elephant people in a doo wop band is a little more uh waht

xp

"Trombipulation's weird mishmash of ancient egyptian elephant people in a doo wop band"

knowing nothing about it, this sounds like The Residents (i.e. my kind of thing)

there is only 1 funkadelic song i hate and that is holly wants to go to california. I swear that track is the reason Uncle Jam Wants You isnt as rated as the others. Its a terrific album if you skip that terrible song.

aw I like Holly Wants to Go To California

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:18 (nine years ago) link

regarding live albums, I vaguely remember a really good live 4CD set?? is that not official?

sleeve, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:18 (nine years ago) link

freak of the week too low!

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:20 (nine years ago) link

you're thinking of this sleeve:

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:20 (nine years ago) link

which is def good

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:20 (nine years ago) link

yeah that's the one, killer version of "Funk Getting Ready To Roll", I think I still have it on home taped cassette

sleeve, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:22 (nine years ago) link

Love the album cover - I've got a t-shirt with the image printed on it - but to me Uncle Jam Wants You is almost a glorified single, with "(not just) Knee Deep" the only first-rate song amidst a handful of mediocrities. "Freak of the Week" is decent, but still, I think overall it's the worst Funkadelic album (of the original 1970-1981 run, I mean). I reserve the right to revise that opinion on re-listening.

Chuck Eddy. He's a people. (thewufs), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:25 (nine years ago) link

I like it but don't entirely disagree that it's the weakest Funkadelic album

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:27 (nine years ago) link

no way!!

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:32 (nine years ago) link

which one do you think is weaker

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:34 (nine years ago) link

to be clear I don't think any of them are outright bad records. Nothing with Knee Deep on it is a bad record.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:34 (nine years ago) link

Tales i suppose

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:35 (nine years ago) link

and it has 2 or 3 classics on it. funkadelic didn't do bad

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:36 (nine years ago) link

I tend to have trouble remembering how UJ's album tracks go.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:36 (nine years ago) link

but there's no theme. its an odds and sods album - a cash in by westbound.
shows how imperial they were that an odds n sods cash in is better than a lot of peoples albums

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:37 (nine years ago) link

Funkadelic albums don't have themes, do they?

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:39 (nine years ago) link

Though, having said that, there's a military thing going on side 2

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:40 (nine years ago) link

america eats its young could have a claim to the weakest actually.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 21:42 (nine years ago) link

I'll get with that.

Controversial, the fans of that akbum tend to be BIG fans of that album.
