I'm just glad to see that 3 people other than me also voted for "Hydraulic Pump" - it's kind of an obscurity, so I wouldn't expect much support from casual fans. But it really needs to be heard in its complete 12" version, not the weirdly gutted edit that's on Urban Dancefloor Guerillas. Thankfully, that version is on Spotify, so I've added it to the updated playlist for this poll. The real glaring absence on Spotify is any of the Warner Bros. Funkadelic - you'll have to use the YouTube links Shakey posted to hear "Freak of the Week," "Hardcore Jollies," and eventually "One Nation Under a Groove" and "Knee Deep," not to mention that has placed or will place off my favorite P-Funk record, The Electric Spanking of War Babies.

the Warner Bros Funkadelic albums are the only ones George owns the rights to so you can maybe guess what's going on there

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 23:34 (nine years ago) link

Does he actually own the rights to them at this point? I knew he was talking about regaining control of those copyrights after this 35-year term had passed, but I didn't know whether he had successfully won them back at this point as he mentioned that Armen Boladian and his people were actually falsifying documents and erasing the original authors or copyright holders from filings with the US Copyright Office. I may be getting all this mixed up, though. If he does indeed have the rights to the Warners Funkadelics that's awesome, and I don't begrudge him at all for withholding them from Spotify, which as we all know perpetrates another kind of thievery.

I forgot to.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 4 December 2014 02:56 (nine years ago) link

Just going back to their weakest albums. I know this will be a really unpopular opinion but Free Your Mind is my least favourite Funkadelic album. I'm not sure why but I've just never been able to get into it. For Parliament I'd agree that Gloryhallastoopid and Trombipulation are both kind of weak. Osmium is a little patchy but still decent. The six albums after that are all amazing.

lots of great songs only getting 3 or 4 votes. did most only send in a 20 song ballot?

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 5 December 2014 17:14 (nine years ago) link

Hey at least they sent one in!

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Friday, 5 December 2014 17:15 (nine years ago) link

Mine was either 25 or 30.

Eric H., Friday, 5 December 2014 17:16 (nine years ago) link

true, tom. I thought the point of artist polls , and the reason for the queue system , was so that people take part in lots of them and try and learn about the bands during nominations and voting time. But i guess shakey was lucky 19 people did vote. deserves better than fucking xtc

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 5 December 2014 17:23 (nine years ago) link

you gonna do this the whole poll?

I mean d-if-we-do d-if-we-don't. Some of us don't have time to learn a dozen more albums worth of material just cuz ILM is having a poll.

Vic Perry, Friday, 5 December 2014 17:26 (nine years ago) link

twenty is plenty

Vic Perry, Friday, 5 December 2014 17:28 (nine years ago) link

I mean song choices, not total participants. But the whole "how can you possibly not know about this and still vote" thing is obviously not going to increase participation, you know?

Think I did vote for the Toys version of 'Wars'...

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Friday, 5 December 2014 17:36 (nine years ago) link

conciliatory point 1: In all seriousness, somebody who wants to, with plenty of time on their hand, should at the end tabulate a 'ultimate funkateer' songlist based only on people who sent in a 100 song ballot. I'd pay attention to the results, and go listen.

not so conciliatory point 2: Personally I don't think poll choices based on some preference you just developed in the last week should be considered as more reliable than stuff you've known for years. My 20 song ballot is based on some seriously road-tested preferences --- like, I KNOW why I voted "Presence of a Brain" because that song has stood the test of time in a way that most other "social commentary songs" have not.

Glad "Wars" made it (although I don't think I voted for it). I always wished P-Funk had done more musique-concrete-ish stuff like that and "Eulogy and Light."

Rollingstone.com has a 10 things we learned from the George Clinton autobiography up now. This one is astounding, as it could be my favorite Funkadelic guitar solo that's not Maggot Brain:

Hit It and Quit It
One of the classic Funkadelic guitar solos wasn't cut by the band's Eddie Hazel but by a strung-out white kid who wandered into the Hollywood Sound studio in L.A. and said he would play on a track if Clinton gave him 25 bucks. Clinton liked his attitude, and let him play on "Get Off Your Ass and Jam": "We set him up, started the track and he just started to play like he was possessed. He did all the rock & roll that hadn't been heard for a few years, and he did it for the entirety of the track. Even when the song ended, he didn't stop." An astonished Clinton paid him $50, but neglected to get his name, so he was never able to use him again or credit him in the liner notes.
