<i>I love the clarity on this one. It gives the chaos kind of an aerial feel, like it's all set against a beautiful clear blue sky.

This is the best description I have read about this album. Missed this poll, but I'm sure I'm gonna put the Gridlink album really high in the regular poll.

Love reading this poll and all the postings and the albums and stuff, but the way.

digging the lack of lord mantis, keep it up ilx

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:29 (nine years ago) link

Old Man Gloom

Santos Montano – drums (1999–present)
Aaron Turner (Isis, Mamiffer) – guitar, vocals (1999–present)
Nate Newton (Converge, Doomriders) – guitar, vocals (2000–present)
Caleb Scofield (Cave In, Zozobra) – bass guitar, vocals (2000–present)

funnily enough I got into OMG before Isis, Converge, Cave In with that first album

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:30 (nine years ago) link

Re-listening to the Morbus Chron now, and really wishing I placed it higher. Haven't heard the Gridlink yet, and from the descriptions it sounds like my kind of Grind ('cause the Trap Them left me feeling a little cold this year) - really hoping to pick it up soon.

BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:33 (nine years ago) link

if rocky and colonel poo had voted i think some of these albums you mentioned would have been higher

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:46 (nine years ago) link

i hope the botanist is yet to come

auto focus, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:50 (nine years ago) link

Surely it is

Mordy, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 22:05 (nine years ago) link

Bunch of stuff in the top 50 that was (and still is) in my stuff-to-check-out list: Thantifaxath (top 5 g.o.a.t. band name), The Body, Thou, Witch Mountain, Hail Spirit Noir, Have a Nice Life. Listened to some of the Boris album; that's p cool yoo. Reminds me a little of the Vaura album; seems like a lot of twilit postpunk mixed in there--I'd almost call it their White Pony...

Giving up on Haikai No Ku though, which is a shame bcz that album is super cool...

Is 'Thantifaxath' just a totally made-up word? If so, does this make them the Moxy Früvous of black metal?

jmm, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 22:14 (nine years ago) link

Botanist better make it xxxp...!

i really like the witch mountain, from today's results - think it's the only thing from today that i voted 4

Mordy, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 22:21 (nine years ago) link

I love the clarity on this one. It gives the chaos kind of an aerial feel, like it's all set against a beautiful clear blue sky.

100% agree with this. it doesn't do the same stuff to my brain that most grind does. extremely fast and busy but highly structured (not chaotic) and not at all rigid. it's a little hard to describe but I find it easy to get lost in.

I was the other one with gridlink at #1

original bgm, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 22:32 (nine years ago) link

cover is really funny but I do wish it were on some other album. heavy cosplay vibes.

original bgm, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 22:34 (nine years ago) link

i just think it's an appropriate cover for the sleekest gridlink album

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 22:42 (nine years ago) link

I like that cover. It's a nice cue that the emotions to be explored on this album are closely related to anime melodramatics.

It's also an example of cosplay gone good.

jmm, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 22:43 (nine years ago) link

It's not cosplay as much as latex fetish wear. I participated in a fashion show with a designer who specialized in latex about 14 yrs ago. Looked great on the women, men, not so much ;)

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 23:43 (nine years ago) link

Were there any other noteworthy funeral doom records this year?

'Kadotetut' by Vainaja had some funeral-y parts and was very well executed imo

cornelius pardew (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 23:59 (nine years ago) link

Oh yeah that Vainaja record is better than either of the Wijlen Wij en Ea records. Forgot where I placed it in my ballot exactly but it made my top 50.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 09:47 (nine years ago) link

loving this rundown.

via this thread, i think i have come to realise my sweetspot : 70s stoner/doom styled

my take so far :

love the oath - going to buy
love electric wizard (i know they have not yet appeared in this list, but have been reading/listening following advise here and elsewhere) - going to buy
enjoyed the witch mountain - may buy
love monster magnet - but i now have 4 albumsby them, and not sure i need more.
enjoyed have a nice life - not metal

did not like gridlink
did not like myrkur
did not like comet control

i could not vote as i did not qualify for the minimum of 5 albums in the poll.
however, had i been able to do so, i would have dropped earths album, primitive and deadly, at the #1 spot, followed closely by blues pills, both of which have been top of my playlist this year.

keep up the good work folks.

― jmm,

It's a perfectly cromulent word

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 10:53 (nine years ago) link

this poll has embigenned us all

xp would have thought Comet Control might hit the stoner/doom sweet-spot? More heavy psych I guess. I need to check Witch Mountain and The Oath.

re comet control :
yeah, it does tick the boxes, think it was the lo-fi production that disappointed.
what i heard sounded lifeless and lacking.
i may dip in again with my proper headphones on.

via this thread, i think i have come to realise my sweetspot : 70s stoner/doom styled

My fave stoner/doom record this year was Ethereal Riffian - Aeonian. Didn't get much press mostly due to them being Ukrainian but it's very nice groovy psychedelic stoner/doom.

mark e, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 11:52 (nine years ago) link

like the music, don't like the gruff vocals - a common issue i have with metal.

no its The Ape Of God II . They released 2 albums

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 12:01 (nine years ago) link

God II sounds like an interesting theological concept.

ahhh .. the cover art for each is different !

did not notice.

mark e, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 13:39 (nine years ago) link

not sure why they didn't just present it as a double. 2nd definitely makes more sense as "pt 2" than as a standalone release.

DJ Mencap / Siegbran: I just added Vainaja to my Spotify playlists. Thanks.

I listened to the Ea record last night and thought it sounded great. They're from Wyoming, I guess? Cool.
