It's not cosplay as much as latex fetish wear. I participated in a fashion show with a designer who specialized in latex about 14 yrs ago. Looked great on the women, men, not so much ;)

Were there any other noteworthy funeral doom records this year?

'Kadotetut' by Vainaja had some funeral-y parts and was very well executed imo

cornelius pardew (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 23:59 (nine years ago) link

Oh yeah that Vainaja record is better than either of the Wijlen Wij en Ea records. Forgot where I placed it in my ballot exactly but it made my top 50.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 09:47 (nine years ago) link

loving this rundown.

via this thread, i think i have come to realise my sweetspot : 70s stoner/doom styled

my take so far :

love the oath - going to buy
love electric wizard (i know they have not yet appeared in this list, but have been reading/listening following advise here and elsewhere) - going to buy
enjoyed the witch mountain - may buy
love monster magnet - but i now have 4 albumsby them, and not sure i need more.
enjoyed have a nice life - not metal

did not like gridlink
did not like myrkur
did not like comet control

i could not vote as i did not qualify for the minimum of 5 albums in the poll.
however, had i been able to do so, i would have dropped earths album, primitive and deadly, at the #1 spot, followed closely by blues pills, both of which have been top of my playlist this year.

keep up the good work folks.

Is 'Thantifaxath' just a totally made-up word? If so, does this make them the Moxy Früvous of black metal?

― jmm,

It's a perfectly cromulent word

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 10:53 (nine years ago) link

this poll has embigenned us all

xp would have thought Comet Control might hit the stoner/doom sweet-spot? More heavy psych I guess. I need to check Witch Mountain and The Oath.

re comet control :
yeah, it does tick the boxes, think it was the lo-fi production that disappointed.
what i heard sounded lifeless and lacking.
i may dip in again with my proper headphones on.

My fave stoner/doom record this year was Ethereal Riffian - Aeonian. Didn't get much press mostly due to them being Ukrainian but it's very nice groovy psychedelic stoner/doom.

that was 31 ?

mark e, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 11:52 (nine years ago) link

like the music, don't like the gruff vocals - a common issue i have with metal.

mark e, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 11:53 (nine years ago) link

no its The Ape Of God II . They released 2 albums

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 12:01 (nine years ago) link

God II sounds like an interesting theological concept.

Ottbot jr (NickB), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 12:16 (nine years ago) link

would probably just be a lame sequel to the orig big feller though i guess

Wah. So goddam pissed to have missed out on this. Great list as usual, though, lots of new stuff to check out. Plus hi, everybody!

ahhh .. the cover art for each is different !

did not notice.

mark e, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 13:39 (nine years ago) link

not sure why they didn't just present it as a double. 2nd definitely makes more sense as "pt 2" than as a standalone release.

So this Horrendous album is really great, and sort of refreshing in that it's not 60mins plus!

Ratt in Mi Kitchen (Neil S), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 14:00 (nine years ago) link

DJ Mencap / Siegbran: I just added Vainaja to my Spotify playlists. Thanks.

I listened to the Ea record last night and thought it sounded great. They're from Wyoming, I guess? Cool.

Been lurking on this thread with interest. New to me stuff that's caught my ears the most is Lantlos and Fen - guess I'm in an expansive post-BM kind of mood.

wonder how much better OMG would have done without the pre-release fuckery

Simon H., Wednesday, 17 December 2014 15:22 (nine years ago) link

going back a few placings, but man that Morbus Chron album is dope. the delirious energy of early Entombed or Dismember with amazing psych crosscurrents!

charlie h, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 15:28 (nine years ago) link

also reminds me (fondly) of the delightful avant-garde disarray of those first couple of At The Gates albums.

charlie h, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 15:32 (nine years ago) link

Horrendous is another very fine retro-saturated album.

charlie h, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 15:39 (nine years ago) link

Gave horrendous a cursory listen, great riffing but the guy's vocals haven't clicked for me yet.

This one sounds amazing on paper but I didn't get around to checking it out.

Listening now.

Pretty good placing for Apostle of Solitude, a solid doom album that I didn't think got that much attention. Some complain about the vocals approaching that sort of melodic post-grunge/nu-metal grey area, but I like 'em.

So this is where all the #metalgate pish started

http://www.deathmetal.org/article/metalgate/

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:03 (nine years ago) link

and metalsucks reply http://www.metalsucks.net/2014/12/15/what-the-fck-is-metalgate/

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:03 (nine years ago) link

love the metal sucks reply

So I started digging into it. The term was apparently coined by Death Metal Underground, and seeks to draw a parallel with #gamergate by alleging that Social Justice Warriors (SJWs) are attacking metal to cleanse it of everything that makes it what the author thinks it is and should be: angry, misogynystic, homophobic music for conservative white people.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:05 (nine years ago) link

It's about anti-ethics in metal journalism.

jmm, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:14 (nine years ago) link

it's all amount a small amount of sexist homophobic racist cunts latching on to that #gamergate pish

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

poor m@tt first they try to ruin his gaming and now his music. Guy cant catch a break.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:19 (nine years ago) link

anyway lets get back to the music

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:19 (nine years ago) link

tho m@tt must be dreading the inevitable #rapgate that is going to happen at some point.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:22 (nine years ago) link

this next placing was the pre-Torche band who reformed and made a new album
