vigetable (La Lechera), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:38 (nine years ago) link

auto focus, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link

fyi that Alcest album fucking rules and I've played "Deliverence" to death this year

all "metal" should be shoegaze IMO

the farakhan of gg (DJP), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link

the lyrics are mixed low on this one.

auto focus, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link

i think you can guess who voted it #1 now

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link

(Alcest)

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:41 (nine years ago) link

Oh wow. I had no idea that the dude behind Botanist is the dude behind Maelstron zine. Roberto (Martinelli) = Otrebor. Huh.

Devilock, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:42 (nine years ago) link

maelstrom, rather

Devilock, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:43 (nine years ago) link

edit: the guy who was behind Maelstrom zine, I should say. I'm out of the loop. Used to read that zine all the time, though. They had massive amounts of reviews and god knows how much I discovered through them.

Devilock, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:45 (nine years ago) link

xpost i generally love shoegaze-metal too, Dan. just thought it was a bit too soft for my liking. ill go back and give it another try though.

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:45 (nine years ago) link

Botanist sure is good.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link

the other otrebor band, lotus thief, is worth checking too

auto focus, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link

I'm not that fussed about a few tracks on Shelter though it's still a good listen, but if we had a tracks poll I probably would have voted Voix Sereines #1. So beautiful.

The Botanist album is lush as well.

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link

ty for the tip.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link

Contenderizer, if you're at all interested, I found Ressentiment much more palatable. Maybe thatd be more your thing...? Of course I really like Discontinuities as well...

i should dig a little deeper, yeah. albums that combine some component of intriguing attractiveness with utter (initial) inaccessibility often wind up becoming favorites in the long run. like i finally figured out how to hear colored sands this year. now i'm baffled by how "unlistenable" it first seemed.

After my first listenthrough (of Shelter) I felt like I'd found a long-lost Catherine Wheel album

I then listened to it about 50 more times

the farakhan of gg (DJP), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:50 (nine years ago) link

this emptiness album is cool as hell. did anybody else dig howls of ebb's visions of the third eye?

okay?

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:53 (nine years ago) link

Listened to that the other weekend. It holds up quite well.

Humorist (horse) (誤訳侮辱), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:55 (nine years ago) link

yeah it's good i just wouldn't rate it over most of the records that have already appeared

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

I think if there had been one more track to make it longer then maybe more may have liked it

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:58 (nine years ago) link

I didn't like it. Sounded like some dark ambient thing I'd download from the old version of mp3.com

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 21:00 (nine years ago) link

did anybody else dig howls of ebb's visions of the third eye?

I remember listening to it at least once, thinking it was really good and definitely different, then for whatever reason forgetting about it for the rest of the year. I have a feeling that if I listen to it now it'll become another of those "shoulda made my list" albums.

That label, I, Voidhanger, has cool things.

Devilock, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

xp - otm, i'd never noticed i, void before this year, but four of their releases wound up making my list

There's something off-putting about Ulver and I can't really identify it but it makes me not want to listen to them. I think they think what they're doing is way more interesting than it actually is.

I sound like Peter Griffin: IT INSISTS ON ITSELF.

I'm with J3ff on Sunnzzzzzzz. Was the other Sunn record nominated? Are we gonna get that one in the top 10?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 21:06 (nine years ago) link

panopticon record isn't for me but even then i can tell it's special

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 21:06 (nine years ago) link

I, Voidhanger released the Midnight Odyssey album a few years back (Funerals from the Astral Sphere), and I still maintain it's one of the best albums of the decade so far. https://i-voidhangerrecords.bandcamp.com/album/funerals-from-the-astral-sphere "> https://i-voidhangerrecords.bandcamp.com/album/funerals-from-the-astral-sphere

feel free to predict the top 10

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link

Well, I fucked up that formatting.

J3ff T., Wednesday, 17 December 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link

I thought you were quoting Vision Creation Newsun.

i can see why someone would think this but uh blood inside is one of the best records ever made, so many things going on at once on that record

their collab with sunn is a little snoozy but i'm generally underwhelmed by collab albums of that nature

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 21:08 (nine years ago) link

funny that a decibel scribe doesnt like sunn o))) is it a clause albert insists on?

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 21:09 (nine years ago) link

I think it's a clause reality insists on.

J3ff T., Wednesday, 17 December 2014 21:09 (nine years ago) link

yeah I recently discovered I, Voidhanger on my own... has some pretty great artists there.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 21:09 (nine years ago) link
