Thought this would be higher. Number one is going to be YOB, isn't it?

J3ff T., Thursday, 18 December 2014 18:32 (nine years ago) link

I hope so

auto focus, Thursday, 18 December 2014 18:32 (nine years ago) link

I agree, Brad – not easy to listen to all the way through, but a stunning achievement nonetheless.

J3ff T., Thursday, 18 December 2014 18:34 (nine years ago) link

the Triptykon was my #1

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 18 December 2014 18:35 (nine years ago) link

Even better than the 1st Triptykon and as great as his best work.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 18 December 2014 18:53 (nine years ago) link

I still have a problem listening to the Triptykon in one sitting, it's so fucking long. Brilliant but I find it's better if I listen to half of it, do something else, come back and finish it. Black Snow always gets me back.

Pooja Bhatt's erotic thriller Jism 2 (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 18 December 2014 18:55 (nine years ago) link

I have the 3x10" vinyl set so it doesnt seem long when I'm flipping the vinyl over constantly

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 18 December 2014 18:56 (nine years ago) link

This Darkspace is fucking awesome :D

imago, Thursday, 18 December 2014 18:58 (nine years ago) link

xp I really wanted that version. A moment of silence in between each side would probably help.

Pooja Bhatt's erotic thriller Jism 2 (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 18 December 2014 18:59 (nine years ago) link

for me the best thing about double albums was the break you got flipping vinyl over

lol

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:02 (nine years ago) link

not a hater but imo this album is okay

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:02 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I'm definitely out of touch with most of ILX here, I don't think there are more than five records in my ballot of fifty that made the top 100.

Siegbran, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:03 (nine years ago) link

yeah, generally, I don't much care for a lot that's placed that's on the stoner rock side of things but it's cool

original bgm, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:06 (nine years ago) link

that has always been the case siegbran

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:06 (nine years ago) link

I'm sure this EW album is fine but I dunno a little burned out on these guys even before the mixed reviews came in

original bgm, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:07 (nine years ago) link

btw there's only 7 points between #1 and #2. on the last day they swapped a few times

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:08 (nine years ago) link

most of the bad reviews tended to come from those who were fb friends with the ex drummer funnily enough

its a very good album

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:09 (nine years ago) link

I was hoping beyond hope it wouldn't place.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:12 (nine years ago) link

I'm surprised it's so high

auto focus, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:14 (nine years ago) link

agalloch next?

auto focus, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:16 (nine years ago) link

people still like agalloch? or did they get better

imago, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:17 (nine years ago) link

they didn't

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:17 (nine years ago) link

hadn't heard triptykon until tonight - sounds amazing so far.

auto focus, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:18 (nine years ago) link

lol sorry to be a bummer about this part of the list, seeing agalloch live at deathfest crystallized why i don't like them

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:18 (nine years ago) link

Which is...? I'm curious.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:19 (nine years ago) link

i mean most of my criticisms amount to "they're boring"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

I've only listened to Soused once but I seriously doubt I'm going to like it near as much as Bish Bosch, Tilt and Drift. Not that that's a big deal really. Bish Bosch was so much fun (for a surprising amount of the duration).

I really appreciate these voted metal lists, I'm so far out the loop now I can't imagine keeping up with all this, even in years to come. Just keeping my fingers crossed that between these and the RYM genre lists, I'll be able to get to all the sounds I want to hear most.
Ne Obliviscaris sounds intriguing.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

I'm really shocked so many people like that slog of an EW record. They've done really good work in the past, and the fact that people seemingly can't tell good EW from bad is a fucking bummer.

fuck this thread moves fast : xpost.

re electric wizard :

i suspect i will succumb and buy this next year.

most of the bad reviews tended to come from those who were fb friends with the ex drummer funnily enough

hahah : i.e. this is the evidence that someone is wayyyyy to close to the source/detail.

that said, its kinda what i love re threads like this ..

there is always someone on ILM that knows way too much re a release.

mark e, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:24 (nine years ago) link

not talking about ilxors btw mark

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:25 (nine years ago) link

i know.
but my point generally stands.

mark e, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:28 (nine years ago) link

i did like the new EW but i found the last one compulsively listenable so i just couldn't get with the new one in the same way

j., Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link

i bought The Oath album yesterday bc of this thread, thanks guys. death penalty is probably next up for me.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link

i bought The Oath album yesterday bc of this thread,

ha. me too - nearly.

instead i got baroness blue/yellow/green (been wanting them for ages), and mastodon 'the hunter'.

so, yeah, this thread has totally put my current listening needs into a new groove

my kids are hating it, but f*ck'em.

mark e, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:33 (nine years ago) link

anyone else feel like the sequencing on this Agalloch album was bizarre? starting with a 10 min slo mo dirge is one thing but then following that with an acoustic instrumental interlude...

anonanon, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:37 (nine years ago) link

seeing agalloch live kinda soured me on em as well. never bothered with this record, prob haven't listened to em since then.

original bgm, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:44 (nine years ago) link

What a great time to have to spend two hours dealing with my wireless provider!

But then I look at the top 10 and maybe mean that nonsarcastically. Haha, well, at least there was some black metal in the Darkspace, there. Also, I thought Melana Chasmata was kind of a step down from the last one (but how couldn't it be).

I'll be sure to check out some of this doomy stuff. I still need to actually hear the lauded earlier stuff. And I have yet to hear a single Yob song; the track lengths look a little daunting, but hopefully I my preconceived notion of what they sound like turns out to be false and those 10+ minute sprawlers will be as engrossing as I find older Opeth -- or for that matter, Darkspace.

Onward!

Devilock, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:46 (nine years ago) link

^still need to hear the lauded earlier stuff of Electric Wizard, he meant to say

Devilock, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:47 (nine years ago) link

I quite like Yob, not even in my top 20 of the year but it's doom with a bit of character, at least

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:48 (nine years ago) link

The sequencing is definitely weird on the Agalloch, and as much as I generally love Billy Anderson's production work, it just doesn't seem to suit them on this album. Also, "Marrow of the Spirit" seemed really inspired and dynamic; the new one just seems kinda lackluster, in pretty much all ways. Obviously us detractors are in the minority, though, because #3 -- wow.

Bloody Pelt Found Near the Scene of the Crime (Skrot Montague), Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:48 (nine years ago) link

I can see why people find Agalloch boring but they bring the atmospheric goods for me

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:49 (nine years ago) link

did not like what i heard of yob.

but hey, i suspect they are indeed in the top 5

mark e, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:49 (nine years ago) link

ooops : top 2 ..

mark e, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:50 (nine years ago) link

marrow sounded so vital, but this album sounds leaden. Ive given it a lot of listens in case it grew on me, but nope.

auto focus, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:50 (nine years ago) link

Saw Pallbearer and Yob live - Yob blew Pallbearer away! hopefully yob make no 1.

auto focus, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:51 (nine years ago) link

woah I made it back home for the top 2... I have no idea what they are, I thought Scott 0))) and Earth were clinchers. YOB??? Didn't know they were that well liked.

Frobisher, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:54 (nine years ago) link

xp otm

and I enjoyed pallbearer live, YOB was just supernatural
