Soldier On & Style Going Hand In Hand

Posted on February 18th, 2014 in Fashion

A lot of the time the music industry isn’t just about music, it’s about fashion and style as well. So it’s just as well we’re a fashionable bunch!

Look at any band through the years and you’ll see they embraced certain looks and fashions – The Beatles and The Kinks with their suits and more recently Oasis and The Stone Roses with their take on a more modern mod look, sporting their parka jackets.

If you’re in the music industry it’s important to look good, after all you’re on a stage in front of crowds of people, you can’t look sh*ite!

For us, we like the mod inspired gear. Lots of Fred Perry, lots of Pretty Green, and then you’ve got Jordan’s velvet jackets and Liam’s funky scarves.

It’s all about skinny jeans, fitted shirts and smart shoes. Only the best, like we said, you can’t look sh*te when you’re performing in front of crowds of people.

And it’s not just about clobber as well. You need to be rockin’ a quality barnet too.

Fortunately in the scene we jump about in there are a lot of good haircuts, lots of fringes and sideburns, but you always get the odd crap one.

Look no further than Tour de France winner, Bradley Wiggins. A true mod, he rocks a quality haircut and his sense of style hits the mark. He’s quite obviously inspired by the great Paul Weller – a class act.

Some of you will maybe be reading this thinking it’s a bit gay to be writing about clothes and hair but they’re probably the ones who wear sh*te clothes and have sh*te haircuts.

The mod movement has been around for decades so what is it about it that’s kept it strong for so many years?

Youths of the early 1960s were one of the first generations that didn’t have to give their money to their family. With more disposable cash, young mods were able to buy stylish clothes, with the first youth-targeted boutique clothing stores opening in the likes of the famous Carnaby Street.

As we said earlier, it’s hella important to look good when you’re part of the mod movement. This is something those in the 60s were all too well aware of. In fact some newspaper reports from the mid-60s focused on the mod obsession with clothes, often detailing the prices of the expensive suits worn by young mods. In some cases they were even able to seek out extreme examples such as a young mod who claimed that he would “go without food to buy clothes”. Mental.

Through time male mods adopted a smooth, sophisticated look that included tailor-made suits with narrow lapels, thin ties, button-down collar shirts, wool or cashmere jumpers, and Chelsea boots.

We all know that the mod scene is big on scooters, but some of you might not know that this is because their body panels concealed moving parts and made them less likely to stain clothes with oil or road dust. Yeah they look good, but it’s all about the clothes, the fashion.

In fact protecting the sharp suits worn by mods is one of the main reasons parkas are so prominent in the mod scene just like the stylish yet functional scooters.

This is just a snapshot of mod fashion and the longevity of it. But although short a small insight into the the history and mechanics of the trend, you can see how it’s always been important to look good and take pride in your appearance – a trend Soldier On will continue.

To learn more about Soldier On and to keep up to date with all we’re doing, including our upcoming gigs, you can visit our website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts.

From another blog post...

For my Christmas one year, my parents bought me a Gretsch Electromatic Jet – which wasn’t dissimilar to the one George Harrison played – and I looked the fucking business. I felt like a porn star when I felt it in my hands, the coolest guy out of all the bands that played when I was gigging – not out of arrogance, I genuinely looked great.

Interior World of Noel Gallagher to thread, pls.

Some of these pictures remind me of Boys Wonder (of whom there is precious little on the internet). Perhaps they're due a revival.

can we just take a moment to think of those unfortunate souls stuck jumping about in a scene without a lot of good haircuts....

Sly Dog have just unleashed their new EP ‘The Future’s Ours’, and this Hertfordshire 5 piece have nailed their Brit Pop flag well and truly to the mast. Taking their cue from Oasis in their mid 90s pomp, Sly Dog have brought their own brand of hedonistic rock n roll to the fore, and this music brims with aspirational exuberance. The title to this EP niftily sums up what Sly Dog are about, and that is making positive feel good music that does indeed look back to those halcyon days of Brit Pop swagger, but also bringing it into the present day in their own inimitable way.

Sly Dog have a broad canvas in terms of musical influences, and they openly admit to their love of the Stone Roses, The Jam, The Rolling Stones and The Who. There is also plenty of Soul in the shape of the Supremes and Marvin Gaye thrown in for good measure. Who can blame Sly Dog for being influenced by some of the best music ever recorded, and filtering these influences into something that is uniquely their own.

‘The Future’s Ours’ is an EP that showcases Sly Dog’s potential and it also reveals their love of Oasis in their heyday. Songs like ‘Faith in me’ and ‘Shadows’ highlight a debt to the ‘Definitely Maybe’ period. The opening bars and the thick guitar sound of ‘Shadows’ will remind those of a certain vintage of the Psychedelically tinged ‘Shakemaker’. Oasis have never been able to disguise their influences, and I think Sly Dog are more than happy to wear their influences on their shirt sleeves. This is not necessarily a bad thing as Sly Dog are making music for people to sing along to as opposed to rubbing your chin with your feet up trying to work out the intricacies of a 25 minute Prog Rock Opus.

Originality is an over used word and pop music has always fed on itself, and it’s what a band does with their influences that matter. Sly Dog are young and do not lack confidence, which is very important when you want your music to be heard, at a time when it seems harder than ever to get your music across in an age where the pleasure of discovering a band and listening to an album has been altered by the inconvenience of I-Tunes and the delete button culture that the internet has spawned. Sly Dog at least have bucked that trend with a UK tour around England in the summer, which reveals that this band is prepared to work hard and slug it out when it matters. Sly Dog have a keen appreciation of great music, and as artists they will surely want to push and explore their sound even further, as all great bands inevitably do.

pretty sure that's why so few UK bands manage to break the states. didn't oasis split up on their first big US tour? and yet their support group screaming trees kept on trucking even though lanegan was busted for crack possession. not to be a macho douchebag, but THAT'S how you rock and roll.

The band describes themselves as having a very raw and original sound, it’s a sound that mimics the 1960s, with a very ‘Quadraphenia’ feel. They take influence from a range of different bands, including The Beatles, Oasis and Kasabian.

“You couldn’t listen to us and label us to sounding like a particular band, but to describe our music to someone who hasn’t heard us before then it would be a cake of three ingredients, Arctic Monkeys, The Jam, The Libertines, with a few extras.”
