the 1975

I went on Sunday night - it was exactly the same as above (and indeed exactly the same as when I saw them last time, except for the addition of "Medicine" and "Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You" - or at least I couldn't remember the latter from the previous show). I enjoyed "Medicine" though!

Took a friend who likes them but doesn't ~follow music~ and he was really creeped out by the preponderance of 14 year old girls. It was, like, most of the crowd. He was reluctant to accept my (earnest) representations that this was at least in part a sign of the band's quality. Those girls, they know.

Though Healy taking off his shirt for several songs was just baiting.

"settle down" is maybe my fave 1975 song but it was the most disappointing live (not that it was bad). the instrumental section didn't really hit. it kind of tempered the song instead of elevating it to a level of unparalleled ecstasy like the studio version does.

still remember my world crashing down around me at the "WELL NOW THAT YOU'VE GOT YOUR GUN" part of 'robbers' <3

i was sitting in the 18+ section so avoided the kids for the most part. it's kind of weird to me that they have such a large teenage girl fanbase. has there been a lot of explicit 1D endorsement? i'm presuming that it's an internet thing because i don't feel like they're ever on the radio here - awkwardly sandwiched between being too pop for JJJ and too alternative for nova

The girls seemed older than archetypal 1D fans ("14 year old" is probably misleading: it was more like a 14 - 17 spread).

I suspect a lot of it comes down to the fact that Matt Healy's entire schtick is of the redeemable bad boy.

Perhaps the biggest reaction (apart from "Chocolate") among this crowd was for "Girls", a lot of the audience seemed to like the idea that he was singing it to them personally.

And yeah I suspect it's been an internet / word of fingers and thumbs thing.

My boyfriend came along as he has been subjected to The 1975 constantly in the car since about the time of the release of the IV EP, and has grown to like them.

On the one hand he was moved to compliment the stylistic range on display following the guitar pyrotechnics at the end of "You", the goth minimalism of "Me", the Blue Nile balladry of "fallingforyou" and the piano/sax duet on "Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You".

But then after "She Way Out" and "Settle Down" and "Girls" had all played he said to me, "these guys definitely have a lot of songs that sound kinda the same but I like that sound so i don't mind."

Tim F, Thursday, 15 January 2015 22:46 (nine years ago) link

bad boy he may be, but healy still seems like a grot - i was a long way from the stage but the whole night i kept thinking "taylor swift is really hitting THAT?"

bae sremmurd (monotony), Thursday, 15 January 2015 23:22 (nine years ago) link

Healy isn't a bad boy, he's a fucking spoilt rich kid. A total poser.

The 1975 attract the 1D crowd because they're a glorified boy band, natch.

Not like the good old days of the Gallagher brothers, eh.

More like those lesser bands from the '80s that were all haircut and no substance.

I've never actually listened to Blue Nile before, checking out 'Hats' - dumb name for an album - but this is pretty great. The Lewis stuff didn't grab me, but Gigi Masin reissue, which I loved, was mining a similar vibe (much more ambient obv.)?

Some things about that interview:

1. My bf thought the interviewer was cute and did a good job (not sure how much the latter pronouncement was influenced by the former). This reminded me that the only people older than us at the last concert was a bear couple in their late forties holding hands and swaying.

2. I think Matt did a fairly good job of explaining their liminal / gateway status between boyband and serious project (which turrican was trying to lampoon upthread). I was worried that his definition of pop was going to veer rockist but I think he was thinking more broadly than his specific explanation necessarily comes across.

3. Would be fascinated to learn whether he wrote "fallingforyou" before hearing The Blue Nile for the first time or immediately afterwards.

tried watching some of that interview but tbrr i dont think i've ever made to the end of any sentence of his
