haw cool, this is one of my true true songs of the year but i swapped it out last minute because gr80 asked me to vote for stitches and i figured i'd be the only vote. maybe the album will place?

In the woods, there is a saying, "we have no neighbours", I never say it aloud because it disturbs the serenity of the valley, which even now is out of earshot of the autotuning that has devastated much of the landscape on the other side of the gorge.

Doesn't your Acid Techno disturb the serenity then?

Reflecting on my ballot -
I say I'm usually highly attuned to preppy BBC bunting'n'bake-off guff, so it comes as a surprise that Clean Bandit should be lumped in with this. Outside of 'Rather Be' as a song, I hadn't really been exposed to Clean Bandit as an outfit, believing for a long time that it was the work of a single producer. It doesn't surprise me that the album was cobblers. This song is too much of a one-off to be repeated again. Despite normally being allergic to this kind of music, I find the sentiment and the 'musicality' of the song totally charming. The way the motif gets passed on from instrument to instrument; the bouncy bassline on the verse; the slightly messy way the organ sounds after she sings 'switch off the battery'; the way the pianos burst in - 'DUN-DUN' just as the chorus comes through. It's joyous and it makes me happy and my partner and I have danced to it so many times this year we can't count. So if this jolly fat joint makes me a Nick Clegg loving, Olympic banner waving, blood sausage eating, G2 reading corny twatbag then I'm all for it.

The System - This is definitely the best thing I've heard from Popcaan. I think the reason it only received one other vote was because it was originally released in 2012, but I discovered it through the album so it's a 2014 release for me. Love the overblown, ever-rising, almost shephard-toney trance synths and especially the lyrics 'system - designed to set me up'

Seasons - Future Islands are a performance art group disguised as an indie synth band. They inhabit a similar 'super-normal' uncanny valley as bands like Talking Heads in my mind. For a long time indie and rock bands have come to shroud themselves in impressionistic soundwashes and half-formed vocals, shying away from bold statements or flamboyance of any sort. It's really refreshing to see a frontman for an alternative band who is so unabashed about dancing and singing like his life depends on it.

How do I request my ballot btw? I can't remember exactly what I voted for.

Popcaan suffered quite heavily from vote splitting by the looks of things, if everyone who'd voted for The System, Everything Nice and Waiting So Long had voted for the same track he'd probably have placed.

Nothing else on the album moved me half as much as The System.

My new year's listening resolution is to check out the Afrobeats thread more. It's fast becoming my favourite type of music.
