though i guess that could be a potential problem because like i'm sure dj quik or like e-40 are the same age-ish and ppl would probably care abt them
― Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 20:09 (nine years ago) link
yeah i see no reason why this thread can't be inclusive of old rappers. a lot of interesting things that happen in rap these days involve guys after they turn 35 and fall off the mainstream radar.
― some dude, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 20:20 (nine years ago) link
Some of them might even make an album that tops Pitchfork and P&J

we've always posted old head rappers in this thread, its like one of the core values

rae sremmurd have one of the biggest rap/r&b hits of the year, co-signs from tons of famous artists, were all over tv and the internet in the run up to their album release date
sold 49k
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 January 2015 00:00 (nine years ago) link
different market tho
― Spottie, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 00:01 (nine years ago) link
it sometimes feels like radio hits in rap music have an inverse relationship to selling albums now
this is dovetailing for me w/ some dude's tweets about travis scott headlining a tour with young thug
has the mindset that acceptance into the mainstream is a signal not of artistic quality but the opposite, with the inverse being true for artists like badass (or travis scott) who can't break a radio hit to save their lives but are treated as serious artists

what's the silent majority and why do they spend money
yeah i think that's it xp
and to your next point, the ones that spend money on rap albums are probs the ones that grew up spending money on albums.
― Spottie, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 00:08 (nine years ago) link
I don't know if it's necessarily all age thing though
― kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 00:25 (nine years ago) link
yeah i don't think there are 50,000 40 year olds out there running to best buy to cop the new joey badass album
in fact i would bet it's mostly kids
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 January 2015 00:37 (nine years ago) link
the thing is, if you appeal to rap fans who listen to mixtapes, then your fanbase is people who are used to getting a lot of rap music without paying for it. if your fanbase feverishly fetishizes a memory of peeling cellophane off of Get Rich Or Die Trying, they might more likely make a purchase.
― some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 00:55 (nine years ago) link
not that i necessarily think the majority of Bada's fanbase is old enough to have GRODT memories, i'm just saying in general
how about j cole & badass appeal to a richer (& whiter) audience ?
― ANU (sisilafami), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 01:15 (nine years ago) link
i'm not really convinced their fanbase is so much whiter than rappers who wouldn't get that tossed at them tbh
― some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 01:21 (nine years ago) link
'richer' is the main argument here.

whether someone plunks down $10 when one of their fav rappers drops an album is far more about cultural habits than it is about who's "rich"
― some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:09 (nine years ago) link
Lupe gonna do twice as much next week, see you all then for this thrilling argument!
― uncle banmee who can remember his live posts (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:14 (nine years ago) link
nah Lupe came out the same week as Badrap$$ and sold less!
― some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:27 (nine years ago) link
Lupe album is way better than the badass one. Bout half good I think
― Spottie, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:39 (nine years ago) link
cole is an established radio star, he doesn't count
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:42 (nine years ago) link
Lupe album has higher highs (opening song is Shipbait) and lower lows. Bada$$ is a solid rappy rap album
― uncle banmee who can remember his live posts (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 03:01 (nine years ago) link
haha you mean the 8-minute second track? i liked the album more often than not but my attention definitely wandered during the long tracks.
― some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 03:05 (nine years ago) link
Lupe def trying some different things which i appreciate but yah way too many dud hooks and such.
― Spottie, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 03:06 (nine years ago) link
Al otm it's about who sees themselves as album-buyers
― deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 03:20 (nine years ago) link
Badass selling doesn't surprise me. He had hype, a fanbase and an album that delivered what his audience wanted to hear. I'm more worried about Sremm numbers. But then again, they've been around for less than a year and there are obv more hits to come on the album as long as they're actually pushed. No need for them to go "experimental" and get dropped by the end of the year, I hope.
― longneck, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 06:50 (nine years ago) link
" whether someone plunks down $10 when one of their fav rappers drops an album is far more about cultural habits than it is about who's "rich" "
right, but your cultural habits might be a result of your socioeconomic status.
