i'm not really convinced their fanbase is so much whiter than rappers who wouldn't get that tossed at them tbh

some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 01:21 (nine years ago) link

'richer' is the main argument here.

ANU (sisilafami), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 01:25 (nine years ago) link

So richer non whites?

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 01:36 (nine years ago) link

how about j cole & badass appeal to a richer (& whiter) audience ?

Saw tons of social media love from nba/nfl stars on the j cole album. Still seeing it

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:03 (nine years ago) link

whether someone plunks down $10 when one of their fav rappers drops an album is far more about cultural habits than it is about who's "rich"

some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:09 (nine years ago) link

Lupe gonna do twice as much next week, see you all then for this thrilling argument!

uncle banmee who can remember his live posts (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:14 (nine years ago) link

nah Lupe came out the same week as Badrap$$ and sold less!

some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:27 (nine years ago) link

Lupe album is way better than the badass one. Bout half good I think

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:39 (nine years ago) link

cole is an established radio star, he doesn't count

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 January 2015 02:42 (nine years ago) link

Lupe album has higher highs (opening song is Shipbait) and lower lows. Bada$$ is a solid rappy rap album

uncle banmee who can remember his live posts (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 03:01 (nine years ago) link

haha you mean the 8-minute second track? i liked the album more often than not but my attention definitely wandered during the long tracks.

some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 03:05 (nine years ago) link

Lupe def trying some different things which i appreciate but yah way too many dud hooks and such.

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 03:06 (nine years ago) link

Al otm it's about who sees themselves as album-buyers

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 03:20 (nine years ago) link

Badass selling doesn't surprise me. He had hype, a fanbase and an album that delivered what his audience wanted to hear. I'm more worried about Sremm numbers. But then again, they've been around for less than a year and there are obv more hits to come on the album as long as they're actually pushed. No need for them to go "experimental" and get dropped by the end of the year, I hope.

longneck, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 06:50 (nine years ago) link

" whether someone plunks down $10 when one of their fav rappers drops an album is far more about cultural habits than it is about who's "rich" "

right, but your cultural habits might be a result of your socioeconomic status.

This has been a real tour de force of completely baseless sociology

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 13:25 (nine years ago) link

This new demographic of rich white ppl over 40, NBA players, and President Obama's daughters is powerful in hip hop

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:01 (nine years ago) link

rae sremmurd were completely unknown this time last year, it's not surprising at all that they sold what they did

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:23 (nine years ago) link

Two new Metro Thuggin songs!

Only learned of them bcz the tracks poll. Good stuff.

yeah. i think it's more illustrative that Future sold about the same amount the first week after 2 straight years of blanketing the airwaves.

some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:16 (nine years ago) link

two fairly unheralded tech n9ne and atmosphere new albums last year sold 35K and 25K respectively first week

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:22 (nine years ago) link

Tech N9ne is a pretty good example of strengthening your retail numbers by releasing albums the way other rappers release mixtapes. E-40 too, really.

some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:28 (nine years ago) link

how much of it is a mentality of "they're on the radio, they're clearly doing fine and don't need my money" vs "i should support this independent artist whom i love"?

virtuoso thigh slapper (Jordan), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:31 (nine years ago) link

tech n9ne and atmosphere also sort of cultivate their own loyal audiences in the same way ICP does, atmosphere has a big 30K ppl festival every summer where they bring in big acts and then headline it, gathering of the yuppalos kinda deal

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:36 (nine years ago) link

lol

virtuoso thigh slapper (Jordan), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:48 (nine years ago) link

was pulling representative spotify tracks for both artists and was shocked by atmosphere's play numbers: 1.5 mill listens for his 2014 single on an album i didn't see discussed on ilx once.

haha wait so all i have to do is say "Papoose" and you add one of his songs to the 'official' thread Spotify playlist? this is gonna be fun

some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 19:06 (nine years ago) link

Lol

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 19:15 (nine years ago) link

not quite. It's only if it contributes to the conversation and provides context

Sounds like a forks display name (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 19:15 (nine years ago) link

Since maybe 65% of the music we talk about is actually on spotify won't it just confuse that process

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 19:30 (nine years ago) link

nah.

Sounds like a forks display name (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 19:32 (nine years ago) link

let me contribute to this conversation, deej. to put this idea in proper context, for every Fonzworth Bentley who may have limited amounts of music available on Spotify, we'll likely mention several artists like MC Chris or Vanilla Ice who have most or all of their catalog streaming.

some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 19:47 (nine years ago) link

is spottie still doing his list?

there are some missing from spotify but kinda surprising how much is actually there, especially mixtapes.

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 23:09 (nine years ago) link

a lot of this stuff shows up months after the fact; for this thread and the techno/house in particular, I'm likely to cycle back in a few months and check to see what's been upped
I mentioned this in the project page, but i'm well aware that the immediacy, widespread popularity and low cost of entry of hip hop as opposed to other popular genres means that a beast as big as spotify is ill served to keep pace with what's au courant. anybody looking to keep a day to day record is gonna find soundcloud/youtube lists more effective here for certain.
that said, spotify does manage about 50% to 60% even here and that number is steadily increasing... and more to the point, I'm not insane enough to want to manage multiple media streams.
and while i wouldn't want to interfere with the popular "lol forks" sentiment, it might be worth considering that it's more an opportunity for regular posters here to broadcast the things you care about (that happen to be on spotify, yes) to an audience that can't otherwise find the thread or leap directly into the fray. 19 people subscribed immediately.

the @mctreeg ep IS on spotify btw and "probably nu it" ended up as one of fave singles of the year.
good example of the limitations of that service though: the bio for Tree lists him as a hardcore punk/alternative metal band and there appears to be at least four artists included on the artist page.
