not sure which was most brilliant -- his portrayal of latka gravas or his heel-toe kick drum technique

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 09:18 (nine years ago) link

Kinda wish they'd released this as two separate albums.

but this way suckers (like me) are guilted into paying 12 buxx for ten new songs

(... sorry, I luv Bjork but I'm already tired of NotM)

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 13:35 (nine years ago) link

no but seriously: I think the 2xLP-with-half-leaked-in-advance could be a surprisingly good marketing strategy for bands in Death Grips' position (rabid fanbase, restless musicians) to basically cash in their chips -- "here's a free half-hour of the experimental shit that might alienate you; btw you're still paying for it whether you like it or not when the proper album drops"

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 13:44 (nine years ago) link

in closing, there is no way in hell I would pay for tix to a Death Grips (RIP) show unless I could literally see the band standing in front of me as I handed over my credit card

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 13:47 (nine years ago) link

def liking the second part a lot more than n---as on the moon

that weird feeling when you find yourself really digging something and it turns out to be called 'why a bitch gotta lie'

i wouldn't pay for death grips tix either but i also don't believe for a second that dude's fucked-up self-destructive "artist" shit is a fully intentional decision on his part.

rushomancy, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 12:04 (nine years ago) link

i would totally pay for tickets; the venue is on the hook to return cash if they cancel and why not pay to see them?

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 8 April 2015 14:48 (nine years ago) link

I've actually seen them and they were pretty great.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 8 April 2015 14:50 (nine years ago) link

i may have mentioned it up thread but i had tickets and showed up about eighty minutes after show start (they had an opener) and the show FINISHED as I walked up to the venue which is kinda unheard of... wasn't even a short set, the opener did like fifteen minutes and then DG hopped on immediately and did an hour. regrets, i have a few

niggaz on the moon sometimes fine, but worked that Bjork sample to death and then sum. Really enjoy the Fashion Week tracks though. Good to work to!

two months pass...

If anyone's curious the set-up in Seattle was doors at 7, no opener, they went on at 9 and everyone was out the door by 10:30. Had a great time.

Was kinda eehhhh about Niggas on the Moon and subsequently overlooked Jenny Death. Big mistake. Thing fucking slays front to back. Maybe their best album.

there's a new one o_O

just listened to it in fact -- and it's yet another good, relentless Death Grips record. Most consistent band on the planet, really.

lol nice. year of the snitch was probably my most listened-to album of the year. it didn't bowl me over at first, but its endless parade of off-the-wall ideas--coupled with its uniformly hazy, blunted sonics--kept pulling me back in. i don't think i've seen it on a single year-end list :(

would love to see them go deeper into the psych-prog zone of dilemma
