Oh man, I want to like this, but I'm wishing the chorus did something...more.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 March 2015 05:42 (nine years ago) link
it is already a very generous chorus
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 20 March 2015 05:44 (nine years ago) link
This is by far my favorite Derulo song, despite the falsetto coming like four years late.
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 March 2015 10:57 (nine years ago) link
idk i heard it the other day and have already forgotten everything about it
― dyl, Friday, 20 March 2015 14:51 (nine years ago) link
you're tripping
― J0rdan S., Friday, 20 March 2015 15:27 (nine years ago) link
Heard this the other day, and yeah, it's nice, but really, it treads awfully close to Maroon 5 territory, which makes me uneasy. Obviously JD's voice is at least tolerable, though, which is a major step in the right direction.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 20 March 2015 16:29 (nine years ago) link
this song makes me very happy
― nxd, Friday, 20 March 2015 16:47 (nine years ago) link
yeah listening again i feel like it is squarely in maroon 5 territory or even like mkto lol, not particularly interesting
i actually like some other desrouleaux songs that basically everyone hates tho so what do i know ;_;
― dyl, Friday, 20 March 2015 17:31 (nine years ago) link
yeah listening again i feel like it is squarely in maroon 5 territory or even like mkto
the production is way more dynamic than anything done by these two bands imo
― J0rdan S., Friday, 20 March 2015 17:53 (nine years ago) link
m5 "love somebody" x the only mkto song that ppl have heard
― dyl, Saturday, 21 March 2015 00:45 (nine years ago) link
yeah this chorus has something "love somebody" about it. guitar is kind of like that one jessie j song "domino."
j0rdan br0 (re?)listen to something like "little of your time" or "secret" by m5 before you talk dirty re: those dynamics. come to think of it m5 b-side "until you're over me" has basically the same structure as this derulo (tense, '80s synth verse, big guitar big hook chorus) but >>>>
― soyrev, Saturday, 21 March 2015 01:26 (nine years ago) link
I fucking love this song.
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 21 March 2015 20:13 (nine years ago) link
was on a date last night and they played it at the bar, which was totally unreal
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Saturday, 21 March 2015 20:16 (nine years ago) link
I'd judge a date on how he responds to my loving this song.
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 21 March 2015 20:19 (nine years ago) link
last night I was on a date and "Dear Future Husband" played and I was like, can I go to CVS
god "love somebody" is garbage
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Saturday, 21 March 2015 20:22 (nine years ago) link
yeah not rly into this sorry boys. tryna take me out to dinner i cancel it
if u know me you'll know this aint my feng shui to begin with but even within the boundaries of admirable craftsmanship the echo repeat crowd chorus feels like a cold clammy hand
― r|t|c, Saturday, 21 March 2015 21:09 (nine years ago) link
this song is clearly going to be a big radio hit so those of u who like it will be pleased to hear it in every public space for the next 8 months
― dyl, Saturday, 21 March 2015 22:13 (nine years ago) link
i heard this the other day and had one of those annoying "this is awesome, but who is this? it's not Trey Songz is it?" moments in the car and then never caught enough lyrics to google it later, so i'm glad jordan brought it up so i know what it is.

Marvin Lee 1 week ago So this is the current direction of pop music, funky, euphoric, slow electropop, much like Jealous, Love Me Harder, Style or Love Me Like You Do, to name a few. I really like it.

my first thought: "wow, Luke James going Tery Songz!"

is "love me like you" as good as the rest of these songs?
also sorta feel like this trend was kicked off by "hold on we're going home"
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 21 March 2015 23:19 (nine years ago) link
yeah the Trey Songz track that this most reminded me of when i thought it might be Trey was BoB's "Not For Long" and that was basically a "Hold On" knockoff, so there's some connection there
i don't like "Love Me Like You Do" as much as the other Ellie Goulding on the charts right now, "Outside," but it's ok i guess

eh "Hold On" definitely wanted to be "Adorn" but none of these songs really have much in common with "Adorn"

sums it up for me. it's catchy and the drum fills are nice i guess
― lex pretend, Sunday, 22 March 2015 10:19 (nine years ago) link
that would suggest an affable disposability but idk i only get oppressive production line drudgery from this, synth stabs like a rubber stamped rictus on prepack orgafun (lol i am MAD rockist about fake disco)
― r|t|c, Sunday, 22 March 2015 10:30 (nine years ago) link
like mannn isnt it ultimately all about freedom, triumph of abiding humanity, losing urself to be urself, etc... not this lemmings motorik
― r|t|c, Sunday, 22 March 2015 10:34 (nine years ago) link
idk it's very ersatz but it's hardly "uptown funk"
― lex pretend, Sunday, 22 March 2015 10:35 (nine years ago) link
vis-à-vis the raves upthread it's somehow both much better and much worse than expected
― lex pretend, Sunday, 22 March 2015 10:36 (nine years ago) link
it's the same as uptown funk but disco as template makes its inherent woe cut closer, too close ime

i lolled at this.

Do you mean "Name & Number"? I love it but I am weirdly into his ropey vocals on it.

My GF texted me about "Jealous" being an "Adorn" knockoff and I trust her judgement.
― raih dednelb (The Reverend), Sunday, 22 March 2015 20:15 (nine years ago) link
wow I don't hear it. Still sounds like post-Justin laptop soul moves.
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 22 March 2015 20:18 (nine years ago) link
"Adorn" is quite literally laptop soul.
― raih dednelb (The Reverend), Sunday, 22 March 2015 20:38 (nine years ago) link
^ lol yep!!
slow the tempo on "adorn" a few bpm and the similarities are pretty striking
― dyl, Sunday, 22 March 2015 20:43 (nine years ago) link
i can see the connection between "jealous" and "adorn" ... i still see "adorn" as being outside that group of songs tho

he looks like the biggest fucking goober and yet his vocals are so weirdly endearing and sweet
he sounds and looks like the 5th most important member of a second-tier boy band

― with HD lyrics (Eazy), Monday, 23 March 2015 01:58 (nine years ago) link
I wasn't into this song at first
But my officemate kept on playing it and now I think it's great, it's one of "those" songs
Looking forward to hearing this everywhere
He was also playing the new Carly Rae and I still think that song is bad and not good and doesn't improve with casual brushes
Sorry Carly, next time... maybe?

i had forgotten while writing about tropical house that matoma produced that song on here w/ j lo -- at the time the album came out i had no idea who he was. apparently it's the next single.
