Louis, I have a feeling that you will be told you are wrong a few times itt and I don't feel like adding to that but have to say your policy on long versions of songs that have both long and short versions is nonsensical

(Also you are both wrong and right about the NYC art punk stuff so far)

wonder which one of street hassle and frankie teardrop wins is a fan of

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Thursday, 2 April 2015 17:28 (nine years ago) link

You're both wrong and right about both songs sorry if that wasn't clear

Good list so far, I'm ok with not having voted. As long as sinnerman is #1

Finn McCoolit (wins), Thursday, 2 April 2015 17:32 (nine years ago) link

Top 10 is all AMT, Bardo Pond, and Autechre, sorry wins.

A-Hanisi Coates (Leee), Thursday, 2 April 2015 17:35 (nine years ago) link

lol both "street hassle" and "frankie teardrop" have springsteen connections

I had to strain an awful lot of Bardo Pond and Autechre out to get my ballot down to 50. If only I had known.

Gimme Gimme Pop Secret (Old Lunch), Thursday, 2 April 2015 17:46 (nine years ago) link

Trying to catch up listening-wise this afternoon, Mingus so far is the only thing that doesn't have me writhing with impatience (apart from my own picks) which is weird since I'm not big on jazz usually

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 2 April 2015 17:54 (nine years ago) link

I actually quite dig this, hooray for slightly broadening horizons

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 2 April 2015 17:55 (nine years ago) link

think there's been a lot of jamming and not much songwriting in the last few, for better or worse

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Thursday, 2 April 2015 17:56 (nine years ago) link

In all seriousness I never pegged you for a songwriting maven

Finn McCoolit (wins), Thursday, 2 April 2015 17:59 (nine years ago) link

lol

i rly enjoy quite a lot of the last few tbh

Love Dark Train

groovypanda, Thursday, 2 April 2015 18:21 (nine years ago) link

Now I'm wondering if there'll be, like, 3 or 4 Underworld tracks in this countdown.

Eric H., Thursday, 2 April 2015 18:32 (nine years ago) link

hope so

I tried not to vote for too many tracks by the same artist but I failed when it came to Underworld

groovypanda, Thursday, 2 April 2015 19:31 (nine years ago) link

Pace going to be slow today, I'll make up for it tomorrow.

A-Hanisi Coates (Leee), Thursday, 2 April 2015 21:01 (nine years ago) link

Love Dark and Long but it wasn't one of the three Underworld songs I voted for.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 2 April 2015 21:25 (nine years ago) link

So pissed I couldn't get a ballot in time.

octobeard, Thursday, 2 April 2015 21:33 (nine years ago) link

As much as I love different various versions of NY's Down By The River I wish I could have voted for the Low / Dirty Three version which is incredibly beautiful but doesn't qualify because it's about, oh, twenty seconds too short. It's a different beast altogether - check it out.

kraudive, Friday, 3 April 2015 00:05 (nine years ago) link

oh I will! forgot I had that

sleeve, Friday, 3 April 2015 00:09 (nine years ago) link

I guess also because I'm listening to Rutti now, it is a shame that nothing from Talk Talk qualifies.

kraudive, Friday, 3 April 2015 00:53 (nine years ago) link

seconding the Low / Dirty Three version of Down By The River. It's magic when, 6 minutes in, Mimi's voice finally cuts into the background static and guitar with the DBTR's familiar melody line.

Dexys was my number one. One of my five favourite songs ever. I'll never understand how they pulled that song off. Saw them do it live in 2003, it was an incredible moment.

I think I skipped past "Heart of the Sunrise" on the nominations list. Might've ended up on my ballot, though probably not very high.

jaymc, Friday, 3 April 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link

Expensive Shit is my 2nd Fela to place

dexy's and bucketheads stuff is other people's business and i won't question their motives too much

heart of the sunrise is lovely and one of the really good yes songs

will get to the others soon

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Friday, 3 April 2015 23:04 (nine years ago) link

I'm not sure the Dexys version on Spotify has the charm of the album version I voted for. Don't know why. I love the one on the album.

kraudive, Friday, 3 April 2015 23:09 (nine years ago) link

relistening to hendrix 'machine gun' and feeling slightly sorry for not voting for it tbh

voted one hendrix very high, but this is just…just…it's too good. his guitar playing is too good. why did he have to die, he's the only early rock death i'm genuinely miserable about, he was going to do (more) staggering things

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Friday, 3 April 2015 23:22 (nine years ago) link

yep

sleeve, Friday, 3 April 2015 23:33 (nine years ago) link

Isaac Hayes was my number 1.

MarkoP, Saturday, 4 April 2015 00:32 (nine years ago) link

^listening to this is like taxiing for takeoff, get on with it

yoo doo right is wondrous, much better than i expected - bel-air was ok but this was something else - i'm not a great can fan but this held my approval more than most of their other stuff

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2015 00:42 (nine years ago) link

get on with it

patience, grasshopper

mookieproof, Saturday, 4 April 2015 00:56 (nine years ago) link

Monster Movies might be your Can album, imago. Father Cannot Yell is really great too.

(Have you heard Mother Sky or not? That's prob the most dynamic of their not-epics)

dexy's and bucketheads stuff is other people's business and i won't question their motives too much

― rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago)

Won't question our motives too much, what does that even mean?

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:18 (nine years ago) link

this is what i'm like

will listen to mother sky when it comes up here! not heard it yet tho. you're right that dynamism and the merest hint of if not songwriting then deepening narrative and tension is what i sometimes find frustratingly absent in can given their manifestly great qualities

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:33 (nine years ago) link

you want songwriting go listen to alice's restaurant or some shit

brimstead, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:36 (nine years ago) link

voted for Isaac. one of the first songs that'll come to mind when i think of the word "epic".

the one Fela song i voted for is yet to show up. maybe it won't.

Future Days is my favourite Can album by some margin, and Bel Air maybe my favourite song. instead of drawing you straight in like a lot of Can material, it paints the scenery for you first so you get a good look at it. after a while you just kinda wash into it.

charlie h, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:44 (nine years ago) link

maybe i've *sigh* kinda had it with Yes. somewhere deep within me i still think Heart of the Sunrise is spectacular though.

charlie h, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:48 (nine years ago) link

stop sighing! embrace the spectacular

mookieproof, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:51 (nine years ago) link
