As much as I love different various versions of NY's Down By The River I wish I could have voted for the Low / Dirty Three version which is incredibly beautiful but doesn't qualify because it's about, oh, twenty seconds too short. It's a different beast altogether - check it out.

kraudive, Friday, 3 April 2015 00:05 (nine years ago) link

oh I will! forgot I had that

sleeve, Friday, 3 April 2015 00:09 (nine years ago) link

I guess also because I'm listening to Rutti now, it is a shame that nothing from Talk Talk qualifies.

kraudive, Friday, 3 April 2015 00:53 (nine years ago) link

seconding the Low / Dirty Three version of Down By The River. It's magic when, 6 minutes in, Mimi's voice finally cuts into the background static and guitar with the DBTR's familiar melody line.

All-timer right here.

Dexys was my number one. One of my five favourite songs ever. I'll never understand how they pulled that song off. Saw them do it live in 2003, it was an incredible moment.

I think I skipped past "Heart of the Sunrise" on the nominations list. Might've ended up on my ballot, though probably not very high.

jaymc, Friday, 3 April 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link

Expensive Shit is my 2nd Fela to place

dexy's and bucketheads stuff is other people's business and i won't question their motives too much

heart of the sunrise is lovely and one of the really good yes songs

will get to the others soon

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Friday, 3 April 2015 23:04 (nine years ago) link

I'm not sure the Dexys version on Spotify has the charm of the album version I voted for. Don't know why. I love the one on the album.

kraudive, Friday, 3 April 2015 23:09 (nine years ago) link

relistening to hendrix 'machine gun' and feeling slightly sorry for not voting for it tbh

voted one hendrix very high, but this is just…just…it's too good. his guitar playing is too good. why did he have to die, he's the only early rock death i'm genuinely miserable about, he was going to do (more) staggering things

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Friday, 3 April 2015 23:22 (nine years ago) link

yep

sleeve, Friday, 3 April 2015 23:33 (nine years ago) link

Isaac Hayes was my number 1.

MarkoP, Saturday, 4 April 2015 00:32 (nine years ago) link

^listening to this is like taxiing for takeoff, get on with it

yoo doo right is wondrous, much better than i expected - bel-air was ok but this was something else - i'm not a great can fan but this held my approval more than most of their other stuff

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2015 00:42 (nine years ago) link

get on with it

patience, grasshopper

mookieproof, Saturday, 4 April 2015 00:56 (nine years ago) link

Monster Movies might be your Can album, imago. Father Cannot Yell is really great too.

(Have you heard Mother Sky or not? That's prob the most dynamic of their not-epics)

dexy's and bucketheads stuff is other people's business and i won't question their motives too much

― rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago)

Won't question our motives too much, what does that even mean?

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:18 (nine years ago) link

this is what i'm like

will listen to mother sky when it comes up here! not heard it yet tho. you're right that dynamism and the merest hint of if not songwriting then deepening narrative and tension is what i sometimes find frustratingly absent in can given their manifestly great qualities

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:33 (nine years ago) link

you want songwriting go listen to alice's restaurant or some shit

brimstead, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:36 (nine years ago) link

voted for Isaac. one of the first songs that'll come to mind when i think of the word "epic".

the one Fela song i voted for is yet to show up. maybe it won't.

Future Days is my favourite Can album by some margin, and Bel Air maybe my favourite song. instead of drawing you straight in like a lot of Can material, it paints the scenery for you first so you get a good look at it. after a while you just kinda wash into it.

charlie h, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:44 (nine years ago) link

maybe i've *sigh* kinda had it with Yes. somewhere deep within me i still think Heart of the Sunrise is spectacular though.

charlie h, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:48 (nine years ago) link

stop sighing! embrace the spectacular

mookieproof, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:51 (nine years ago) link

:D

charlie h, Saturday, 4 April 2015 01:52 (nine years ago) link

I didnt have room for Bel Air but I love it, mostly bcz in college I loved The Sea and Cake album The Fawn, which kinda leaned heavily on Future Days as a bedrock stylistic origin point, much the same way that Stereolab would do with Neu!

Hendrix's biog is of someone whose life was being drained by the business he was in. Its just as likely that it would've been shit funk jamming, fusion recs and heroin addiction.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 4 April 2015 09:44 (nine years ago) link

But yes I wake up depressed EVERY DAY by poor old Jimi's death. So young.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 4 April 2015 09:49 (nine years ago) link

wonder where the other hendrixes will finish here

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2015 10:02 (nine years ago) link

probably for the best that he died just in case he made some bad records

Albanic Kanun Autark (nakhchivan), Saturday, 4 April 2015 10:14 (nine years ago) link

he would have joined king crimson or neu! and made the most legendary rock music of all time

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2015 10:27 (nine years ago) link

his death was tragic regardless of whether he had already peaked or if he was destined for even greater things. if he was still alive and as uncool as Jimmy Page or Pete Townshend, he'd at least still be alive, which is something.

charlie h, Saturday, 4 April 2015 11:04 (nine years ago) link

the thing that really nags at me about Hendrix these days is how beautiful his voice was. yeah i've long been stuck on how phenomenal a guitarist he was, but man, he just fires on so many goddamn levels.

charlie h, Saturday, 4 April 2015 11:24 (nine years ago) link

at the same time

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2015 11:28 (nine years ago) link

yes. i don't think anybody else has made it seem so easy.

charlie h, Saturday, 4 April 2015 11:31 (nine years ago) link

leee had best start the countdown again soon or we'll end up having a tedious 'best rock musician ever' debate

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2015 11:33 (nine years ago) link

ha ha totes! this poll is being e-pic-ally dragged out (which is fine by me).

charlie h, Saturday, 4 April 2015 11:34 (nine years ago) link

it's not epic it's just long

Finn McCoolit (wins), Saturday, 4 April 2015 11:37 (nine years ago) link

I know it's been said many times that his consideration for ELP was unlikely to come to anything (HELP was joked about) and Emerson said that when they jammed, Jimi completely drowned him out but it's quite funny to think about it.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 4 April 2015 11:45 (nine years ago) link

reading about him touring with soft machine has me wondering what on earth could have been achieved

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2015 11:47 (nine years ago) link

well, he did do some recording with wyatt. the version of slow walkin' talk that showed up on that '1968' release not long ago for one.

if moon in june turns up inside the next *checks leee's current rate* week and a half i'll be disappointed tbh

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2015 12:21 (nine years ago) link

the jimi hendrix bio movie was really illuminating to me because i didn't know what a sweet person he was. shame more people don't recognize that when you're that good at something the default position should be to NOT be an asshole. it's also a minor shame that i forgot to vote in this poll but i have been enjoying the rollout.
