haha thx. i was just trying to drop an innocuous little link for those who might be interested and now i feel like an idiot.
forks, his live show is great (i think he was nervous on Colbert and overcompensated with too many sousaphones).

glad to hear, that colbert was my only exposure to him live and i was afraid he took all his least enjoyable eccentricities seriously and was a disaster onstage

I saw Shamir in a church basement last night and he was STUNNING (I also saw him like 6 mos ago play a short set at a club at like midnight and he seemed sorta tired and it was just-okay). Most of the crowd was, like, hyperactive high school kids which was sort of surprising and they were also not v well behaved and kept stage diving and trying to mosh, ew. He was so bubbly and engaged ~AND~ he played both "If It Wasn't True" and "Sometimes A Man" which he didn't play last time (also the crowd acted like they were new songs and totally didn't respond). It was so much better than I expected it to be. Srsly go see this lil angel.

Oops didn't mean to double post
as promised, he was very fun and straightforward live; walked on stage and tweety birded out a HI and it was the cutest thing. He's got a good thirty minutes of sharpness, which is an impressive catalogue for such a youngster. I would only say that after that first half hour, I needed to tap out as (admittedly without the aid of drugs, alcohol or someone to dance with), it started getting to be a bit too much cotton candy all at once. Would love to see a double bill with scissor sisters, which this is reminding me of more and more now.

i have no real duranx2 nostalgia at all and i'm inclined to like shamir's voice but, much like his cover of brandy clark's "Stripes", i was happy to listen to this once but have no inclination to want to hear it again.
― ulysses, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 17:12 (eight years ago) link
The song itself isn't suited to rendition as a sensitive acoustic song and the way Shamir sings it neutralizes all of the good things about that voice and emphasizes all of the terrible things about it.

his "stripes" cover is borderline unlistenable

anyways, in case this gets pulled because of legal stuff, here's the manifesto/tracklist:
I was gonna quit music this weekend. From day 1 it was clear i was an accidental pop star. I loved the idea of it, i mean who doesn't? Still the wear of staying polished with how im presented and how my music was presented took a huge toll on me mentally. I started to hate music, the thing i loved the most! When i would listen to immaculate recordings with my friends their praise over the quality of the art as opposed to the art itself made me feel really sad for music as a medium in general. My music only feels exciting for me if its in the moment, and thats what this album is. I made this album this past weekend stuck in my room with just a 4 track feeling hopeless about my love for music. Im not gonna lie, this album is hard to listen to, but it was even harder for me to share. I love pop music, i love outsider music, and i love lofi music, this is my way of combining all 3. Anyway I played, wrote, produced, and mixed everything and big thanks to Kieran Ferris for Mastering an album with an hours notice! its free! Enjoy! Love Yall! Still more 2 come!!!!!!!Tracklist:HopeWhat Else Ignore Everything Tom KellyEasier Like A BirdOne More Time Won't Kill YouI Fucking Hate YouRain (Blake Babies Cover)Bleed It OutAlbum download: www.mediafire.com/folder/u0wwrkud56vad/HOPE+MP3S

And they reviewed the album the other day.
Saw this line in an interview: A lot of the producers I was working with felt stuck to making Ratchet 2 or Ratchet Deluxe, which is not what I wanted.
And having helped out on some demos awhile back, I can say I was definitely feeling that.
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 21 April 2017 16:20 (seven years ago) link
the review seems kinda unfair
Shamir is not the first artist to fall prey to the trappings of lo-fi—like all “less-is-more” creative strategies, it's deceptively difficult to perfect
but also
If pop music demands perfection and following a regiment of rules, Hope runs screaming away from all of that
― geoffreyess, Friday, 21 April 2017 20:06 (seven years ago) link
Must you.
Today, Shamir has announced his new album, Revelations, with a video for the song "90's Kids." The video for the millennial anthem fittingly features Shamir recreating iconic memes.

I give him tons of props for rejecting the path that was laid out for him and putting out exactly what he wants, and it's obviously very important to him to go back to DIY in terms of honesty/artifice/presentation.
Is there any precedent for an artist putting out a lo-fi, home-recorded album to follow up a very polished & produced debut?
