it's a truly hilarious song

strøm thurmond (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 23:53 (fifteen years ago) link

which is one of the various reasons why i love it

strøm thurmond (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 23:53 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, it is hilarious, even if the chorus is kinda dinky

chinese electrodribble torture (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 23:54 (fifteen years ago) link

The part in "Kelly's 12 Play" where he does those R. Kelly "OHHH-OH-OH-OH-OH-OH-OH-OHOHHHH" vocal runs = A+

chinese electrodribble torture (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 23:57 (fifteen years ago) link

dinky? this part is so awesome

I had to run right up out of the VI
Pop that
I seen you drop that
NOW I'M LIKE DO THAT AGAIN
AY SHAWTY DO THAT AGAIN

strøm thurmond (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 23:58 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm talking about the part where he sings the title over and over.

i.e. the chorus

The melodic contour on the first set rises, while on the second it goes up and down. Fitting, in it's way.

Your body's the cup
My body's the coffee
And I'm brewin' it
While we're doin' it

"and i'm gonna have you with my cup of coffee
jump on it jump on it"

- luv songs

strøm thurmond (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 April 2009 08:45 (fifteen years ago) link

atm my favorite verse on the alb is

Whoo
Well if they ask you can I sing like Usher
Say no
But I could make you sing like Mariah
Ooooo
If they ask you do I dance like Chris?
Tell them no
But as much rubbing as we do I could start a fire
Hey... bring the water
We... sweating out the sheets
Shorty bring that body back to me
Shorty round after round it's going down
Call me Ali the way I knocked your ass out

strøm thurmond (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 April 2009 08:48 (fifteen years ago) link

unfortunate placing of "chris" and "knocked your ass out" notwithstanding

strøm thurmond (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 April 2009 08:49 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm starting to think "Love vs Money" is the best song. There's quite some anguish going on there.

sugjust blaze (The Reverend), Friday, 3 April 2009 08:54 (fifteen years ago) link

part 1, that is

sugjust blaze (The Reverend), Friday, 3 April 2009 08:55 (fifteen years ago) link

it's my favorite too - all that clattering at the beginning and the slowed and pitched down "i wanted to take you home to my mama, but no" and then it locks into the verse and "WHAT WE HAD WAS AWWWWWESOME/ UNTIL HE CAME AND TOOK YOU OUT MY LIFE" and it's on

strøm thurmond (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 April 2009 09:05 (fifteen years ago) link

also

i cant call her even though the boy's in neeeeeeeeed
but needing her wont bring her back to *falsetto* meeeEEEEEE
i can't breathe
and i got heartache
like you wouldn't believe

You'd be right.

ilxor, Friday, 3 April 2009 17:57 (fifteen years ago) link

"Home 2 My Mama" is def. my favorite at this point

crab ringgoon (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Friday, 3 April 2009 18:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Revisiting the first album for a sec, it was commented on that at the end of "Playin' in Her Hair", Dream randomly decides to turn into a club anthem. I like how "Nikki" starts to go the same route and then pulls back just as suddenly.

My love's like a window
That's if you didn't know
Peace up, A down, ride out
Cause I'm sittin' in the '64
That's if you didn't know
Baby I'm all cried out

It's as if his good mood on the former allows him to let loose and party for a bit, but on the latter his attempts at escapism fail him.

sugjust blaze (The Reverend), Friday, 3 April 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link

more evidence that Mariah Carey is a ProTools effect

Is Los da Maestro this guy? If so, interesting.

The Reverend, Sunday, 12 April 2009 00:50 (fifteen years ago) link

now let me do-do-do that body like it oughta be done
uh, uh, and how could somebody mistreat a body that's h-hotter than o-one hundred suns?
uh, oh yeah, you deserve a better man and i got the better plan:
cupid ain't got shit on me!
i'm harder than superman, i bounce back like a rubberband
these niggas ain't got shit on me!
you know it - see, all these niggas be poppin' that bullshit
but i be in it like a preacher in a pulpit
it ain't they fault cuz i know they mean you well
but every time you fail
she runs right back to MR YEAH

I have been known to gesticulate urgently while walking the streets with "Right Side Of My Brain" playing from my headphones.

Tim F, Friday, 24 April 2009 12:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I have listened to this album every day since first getting it.
When I get into work some mornings I can't talk because my throat's worn out from singing along in the car.

look at you: lookin' like a lobster (tpp), Friday, 24 April 2009 20:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i basically skip the entire first half of the album tbh

autogucci cru (deej), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:45 (fifteen years ago) link

not saying its bad or whatever, just saying i really replay the last half a lot more

autogucci cru (deej), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Agreed. If the whole album was as good as the second half it would come in ahead of Love/Hate - instead I feel it ranks slightly behind it.

Tim F, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:47 (fifteen years ago) link

its funny cuz songs like 'mr. yeah' and 'right side' dont feel like big important highlights, they just feel like really truly great album tracks. if that makes any sense

really want to write about this album for a publication of some kind

autogucci cru (deej), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:49 (fifteen years ago) link

i always skip the first 3 songs and sometimes the first two ballads but i think it's more of a sequencing issue than song quality

GOON carter cash (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:50 (fifteen years ago) link

i sometimes start at 'love vs money', just cuz i caned the singles so much as standalone tracks when they emerged, but the first half is absolutely crucial to the second half and pretty much as good - listening all the way through really pays off too. it's perfectly sequenced, really.

cumlord jamar (The Reverend), Thursday, 7 May 2009 08:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Am I the only noticing he's got some twangy vocals going on in parts of "Rockin That Shit" and "Take U Home 2 My Mama"? Where did that come from?

cumlord jamar (The Reverend), Thursday, 7 May 2009 08:34 (fifteen years ago) link

like what lines would you say are twangy on "Rockin'"?

shipforbrains (some dude), Thursday, 7 May 2009 12:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i always thought i was just hearing things but right at the 1 min mark of "rockin that shit" after he says "nothin i can saayyy.." the beat drops out and you hear this little blip and it's the same sound that happens when you get an IM on ichat

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 7 May 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago) link

ships: "Ok I'm lyin'/ Damn you fine/ And umm..." and "Take Me I'm yours/ Shawty" and "Don't leave us on the floor/ Shawty". It's less pronounced than on "Take U Home 2 My Mama".

I feel like 4 dancers is too modest. Should be more like a Kylie extravaganza or something.
