i went to school with her!

my fave halvorson so far is her work in the tom rainey trio on the "pool school" album."plymouth" w/joe morris & pals wasn't terribly successful (they were going for "psychedelic", saft leaves no space, maybe they needed to spin a few gravitar discs before pressing "record"). similarly despite all doing individually fantastic work the "thumbscrew" album (fujiwara / formanek/ halvorson) pitter patters around aimlessly (i like aimless pitter pattering, but...).hoping davis / laubrock /halvorson hit the studio as "death rattle" that cannot fail !

Just got a Tom Rainey Trio disc in yesterday's mail - Rainey on drums, Halvorson on guitar, Ingrid Laubrock on saxophone. Hotel Grief, on Intakt.

i like the tom rainey disc a lot but i am kinda a sucker for a half-evocative title, i think her own quartet record 'reverse blue' might be even better

Her stint with Ribot in Young Philadelphians yielded a recent iTunes release. A quick listen learns they're soul covers with strings.

The new Thumbscrew (Michael Formanek, Tomas Fujiwara, Mary Halvorson) album is quality!
― calzino, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 13:54 (eight years ago) link
yeh that first one grew on me after a while. not sure fujiwara was mixed loud enough
― massaman gai, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 06:07 (eight years ago) link
surprised i haven't raved endlessly about ingrid laubrock's anti-house on this thread. MH plays - compositions are iIL's. it's the epitome of that supremely herky jerk RIO/Hermeto /Beefheart chamber-skronk. asymmetrical melodies blossoming & dissolving out of hiccuping grooves
― massaman gai, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 11:25 (eight years ago) link
heavy GATEWAY vibes on new thumbscrew. splitting the diff zwischen tal farlow & flying luttenbachers always gonna get my vote

Halvorson’s Out Louds (her, fujiwara +goldberg) also have a new album out, not heard it yet.

She has added the brilliant steel pedal guitarist Susan Alcorn (whose Soledad album is a personal fave) to the septet that did Illusionary Sea on her new album Away With You. It sounds quite ace on the first listen.

Ghost Loop is a great record. I love the interplay between her and Ches Smith

The latest Book Of Angels with Halvorson and Miles Okazaki is totally sick!
― calzino, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 09:55 (six years ago) link
Saw her playing with Ingrid Laubrock last night - Kris Davis, piano, Tom Rainey, drums - didn't like the stuff they were playing much but she is jaw droppingly good.

She is so good, although I'm not sold on her latest album with vocals on it, despite it getting lots of good reviews - might need another listen. Kris Davis' work with Eric Revis and her Borderlands Trio has been pretty great as well. Could deffo relate to a Laubrock band not being someone's thing tho!
― calzino, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 18:28 (six years ago) link
the latest double lp of her Thumbscrew trio is totally badass, and the cd 2 of covers/deconstructions of standards is totally ace as well imo.

She just won a MacArthur Fellowship. I think I'll see if I can borrow twenty bucks.

Digging the sound of this octet album.

Man I always enjoy her so much and don't spend enough time listening to her, maybe because it's "challenging" enough that I have to be in the right frame of mind and setting. WKCR played something last night from Ingrid Laubrock's zurich concert which features her, Tom Rainey, Drew Gress and others and I was loving the guitar on it.

Recommended her to a student today when she was interested in doing a project on a woman instrumentalist. She said there were too many men in jazz 💜

Honestly the three guitarists I'm find most interesting lately are women: Halvorson, Adrianne Lenker, and Vanessa Wheeler who uses the moniker VAVA

she's so prolific it would take a bit of exploring. Ones I've loved in recent years are the Paimon album on tzadik, the Thumbscrew band, the Johnny Smith tribute album, Maid With the Flaxen Hair. Not really listened to her latest yet.
